Can’t tell anyone in real life

I’m actually shaking a bit writing this because I’m so scared of the comments to come but I need to tell someone because I can’t tell anyone in real life.
for the last 10 years I’ve been addicted to opioids, taking uncountable amounts every day & spending upto £1k a month on tablets from the black market.
im FINALLY clean; did it all by myself by weaning off slowly and im so proud of myself. None of my friends and family know and from the outside looking in I don’t think you would have guessed.
I just feel so amazing, I have so much more energy, I’m not in as much pain anymore and life just feels more colourful as cliche as that sounds. I’m just so proud of myself that I beat this horrible addiction that’s had such a hold on me for a decade. I’m so scared I’ll relapse but I’m determined. Thanks for reading if you got this far!!

OP you made the choice to get clean all on your own without pressure from anyone else.
That really means something.
I did tell a few people including my GP because I felt that if I hit a rocky patch I might need support that did not come from a strip of tablets.
I am nine years clean in three weeks after ten years of being dependent. I never thought I would do it but it really is possible.
Best decision I ever made.
A life free of the drugs, the stress, the black market, the spending, all of it is amazing.
Well done and take it a step at a time.

Internet stranger, you have impressed and inspired me today! I know how hard it is, and yes, it's the longer term we have to deal with, but you've already shown terrific strength and determination to get off those devil's tic-tacs! 😄

No more worrying about getting your stash, always having them with you... no more suspicious looks or awkward questions from pharmacists... no more horrible withdrawals... bliss.

Remember to be kind to yourself in the early weeks and months, keep things simple, find something good and healthy to enjoy every day... Natural dopamine, when it comes back, is so much better and more rewarding, isn't it...

Keep up the good work!

technosausage · 11/03/2025 09:27

Amazing, you should be really proud of yourself x

Huckyfell · 11/03/2025 09:30

Well done. It's early days yet and you've a bright journey ahead. Keep going, keep strong, it'll not all be easy but you can do it.

Dweetfidilove · 11/03/2025 09:31

Huge congratulations to you!
Your body and wallet will appreciate this achievement.
I hope you're accessing support to help keep you on the recovery path, and to keep you accountable.
Again, well done!

Candledrip · 11/03/2025 09:31

Wow you have done incredibly!

tygertygers · 11/03/2025 09:34

Wow - you are incredibly determined and resilient to do that on your own.

petitfromage · 11/03/2025 09:38

I'm so so proud of you OP! You have done something incredible and you deserve all the happiness that your substance free future affords you.

I'm a psychotherapist that has worked with addicts and I would strongly recommend joining support groups to help you through this vulnerable phase. You don't need to just rely on your own resources to get through the tough days. There are plenty of great online resources that you can join and remain anonymous. LMK if you need any help with this.

And again huge congratulations on getting your life back.
Look in the mirror with great pride!

oakleaffy · 11/03/2025 09:42

Stay 'clean' just for today.

Remember your tolerance will have reset to zero as well.

askmenow · 11/03/2025 09:45

Onward and upward OP!! 💪
With such fortitude, just imagine what more you can achieve now... Your children will be sooo proud of you and your achievements.

Andanotherone01 · 11/03/2025 09:46

Obviously I don’t know you but I feel so incredibly proud of you. You have managed stop possibly one of the hardest things to quit.

Pickupapen · 11/03/2025 09:49

Hey you, I’m so chuffed for you, this is a huge achievement!!

if you ever feel wobbly or worried about it again, come back here and tell people about it, I too have found support at low times on mumsnet and people can be absolutely incredible x

P00hsticks · 11/03/2025 09:52

Congratulations! That is a massive achievement and will turn your life around.
I don't know you but I'm still proud of you !
Just keep it up one day at a time.... we're all rooting for you.

ManyATrueWord · 11/03/2025 09:53

That is utterly amazing. Well done you!

Congratulations on stopping. I wish you strength to never start again x

YourHappyJadeEagle · 11/03/2025 09:55

Well done, that must have been hard. I’ve learnt from you today as I have fibromyalgia so painkillers feature big in my life. Thank you 💐
Enjoy your holiday.
Stay strong, remind yourself every day how much better your life is now.

ladyofshertonabbas · 11/03/2025 10:04

Well done, incredible.

Sansan18 · 11/03/2025 10:05

You've done so well, I used to work with a ex military bloke who became addicted to opioids after surgery and he was a war veteran who said it was the toughest struggle he'd ever engaged in.
Consider looking for support and being able to offer support.Congratulations.

Mumof2heroes · 11/03/2025 10:06

You're a total rock star OP well done ❤️

CatsChin · 11/03/2025 10:08

This is incredible - particularly with the lack of help that is usually available for this sort of thing - you are really strong OP, you did an awesome thing!

BeesAndCrumpets · 11/03/2025 10:08

This is INCREDIBLE.

I'm advocating for you to get rl support too @Catchmeifyoucam, on your terms. Sometimes it is easier anonymous... especially if there is guilt and shame to process, and you want to do this in your own time.

Fucking hell, what an achievement!

Sahara123 · 11/03/2025 10:08

My goodness that’s incredible, well done !!

Ohisitjustme · 11/03/2025 10:09

WOW well done 😁

bubbletubble · 11/03/2025 10:10

Congratulations - what an achievement. I don't know you but I'm very proud of you. Keep going! 💐❤️

TwinMama39 · 11/03/2025 10:14

Wow what an incredible achievement. You should be so proud of yourself! You've got this x

ChorusOfDisapproval · 11/03/2025 10:14

HUGE congratulations, that's such an achievement! I gave up smoking (nowhere near as difficult I know) and 24 years down the line I haven't had 1 cigarette. So proud of it, even now all these years later.

So you can definitely keep it up - it's never worth going back, even for a little tiny bit. I'm sure it's so much easier not having to hide your addiction too. Really, really well done.
