Car passed Mot today, and did last year too. I'm thankful.
Is this normal?

About 50% of the time. It's a well looked after, carefully driven, reliable brand that is always serviced. 12yrs old.
It's cost me a fortune. I hate MOT day.

girlfriend44 · 10/03/2025 15:22

Strangely enough it's not serviced but low mileage.

Almost never. It's a 20 year old car. It usually has some minor defects that need fixing to get through the test.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 10/03/2025 15:29

Yes always, as it’s well maintained.
Not the case though when I was young, poor and drove a succession of old bangers.

MiddleAgedDread · 10/03/2025 15:31

so far it has (it's 7 years old). Previous cars I've had started to fail around this age but this one has much lower mileage on it than they did at the same age.

JaceLancs · 10/03/2025 15:33

It’s high mileage and 12 years old so no - they will usually find something
DP is great at fixing cars though so I don’t worry too much

Why isn’t it serviced?!

ComtesseDeSpair · 10/03/2025 15:42

I don’t think my poor campervan has passed an MOT first time in the last decade and a half, but she’s coming up on thirty years old and is a labour of love. My TT fails every year on the same faulty sensor which they switch off, rinse and repeat the next year, but is otherwise faultless so rarely costs me anything significant. I do my own routine servicing and repairs and am pretty good at picking things up before they turn into bigger problems.

jasflowers · 10/03/2025 15:43

I'll tell you in a weeks time.... so far its passed all of its 6 mot's with only ever 2 advisories.

@girlfriend44 Cars not serviced are far more likely to fail a DPF and/or emissions, as well as go bang!

biscuitsandbooks · 10/03/2025 15:45

I've had my car for five years this summer and it's only ever failed once - on a tyre pressure sensor that was fixed for free.

It's a 2016 Hyundai and it's done me very, very well. Never let me down and drives really nicely.

Merryoldgoat · 10/03/2025 15:48

Pretty much as I book its annual service and then MOT straight afterwards so the service sorts it out and then the MOT is usually a non-issue.

Catza · 10/03/2025 15:49

My car is 16 years old and during the last MOT the only thing needed replacing was a screen wiper. That's a pass in my books.

Mynewnameis · 10/03/2025 15:51

Never failed. Mazda 9 years old

TickingAlongNicely · 10/03/2025 15:52

Our 7yo car has 0nly ever failed on tyres which is normal wear and tear.

The car that died recently, at 18.5yo usually had a few things in recent years.

Same here. Mine was serviced and passed last week.

with my car. It does maybe 1000 miles a year at most. No services, passes first time. It had new tyres once.

Eek. Is is worth having a car to do less than 20 miles a week? Cars don’t like not being driven and your tyres and oil will be degrading while it’s stood there.

I don't get mine serviced.

I sometimes get a pre MOT check. I've never had a car fail an MOT. Get the occasional advisory. One car had the same advisory three years running, I never got it fixed.

Current car is nine years old this year, just passed its MOT. Though I did get new brakes beforehand as they felt off so had them checked.

Do you not check your tyres?!

GrantMitchell · 10/03/2025 16:00

Service and MOT same day, but I still get nervous. Had a fail and then pass on the retest in the past.

It feels like an exam to me (test in the name!) and somehow like it’s assessing my car ownership skills Confused

Don’t you check stuff before the MOT? Lights, tyres, brakes, wipers?

I book full service and MOT with the same garage on the same day. They check everything during the service. They told me they had to replace wipers and MOT was good to go.

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 10/03/2025 16:03

About 50% of the time. But it's usually something that can be fixed there and then so it's all done within the day. There are usually a couple of advisories though. But it is 17 years old with 100k on the clock so I can't complain.

ItTook9Years · 10/03/2025 16:03

You’re meant to check your car more often than once a year. These are matters of safety.

I don't understand why people need to "check" things like wipers and lights. It's obvious if they're not working. Tyres less so, the tread needs checking of course.
