Car passed Mot today, and did last year too. I'm thankful.
Is this normal?

Just checked mine, done 5000 miles since 2020 and every year it's been an advisory on misting shock absorbers so keeping an eye on those

Kibble29 · 10/03/2025 16:53

Avoid the anxiety of MOTs by just not taking your car for one. 🤓

UprootedSunflower · 10/03/2025 16:55

My 24 year old car needs about £50 in adjustments or bits most MOTs

Lovelysummerdays · 10/03/2025 16:56

Mines does ( touch wood) always book it in a fortnight before for a service so anything outstanding is fixed in advance. My garage is good though and my car is solid despite being old with a 100k on the clock. I’ve had it three years and only needed consumables done.

Ariela · 10/03/2025 17:00

Our vehicles always pass first time. We thoroughly valet inside, outside underneath, check lights, wipers etc & DH checks everything over and does a routine service at same time, and we replace anything that needs doing, so they're presented to the MOTing garage in showroom condition. So they shouldn't ever fail really.

Yep, 10 year old Pug. Had it 6 years, not really spent much money on it at all. I would like to upgrade but I'm afraid of the unknown in case I end up with a turkey like some of the cars my partner has had. Its outlasted several of his. Now he's got himself a Pug and he loves it.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 10/03/2025 17:02

7 year old car. Failed 2 mots. Once due to a defective part it had been manufactured with (so covered under warranty) and another due to a part that goes frequently in cars locally due to the sheer volume of roundabouts, potholes and road humps here and again covered by the warranty.

It's serviced every year, even though I do very low milage (less than 5000 a year)

You do realise the service and the mot have literally nothing to do with each other? Nothing they test for is what is dealt with at a service!

There’s a lot of crossover between a service and an MOT, plenty of things that are checked during a service are also things that could fail an MOT, tyres for one example.

If you book a service and MOT at the same time, the MOT will usually be completed first followed by the service.

In 30 years of car ownership, I’ve never had the service before the MOT.

(one car has a 5k service interval though so never lines up with the MOT.)

Not sure what point you’re trying to make?

ItTook9Years · 10/03/2025 18:08

That servicing being done after the MOT isn’t something I’ve experienced. So it’s not “usual” at all.

UpTheLaganInABubble1 · 10/03/2025 18:09

Yes

MargaretThursday · 10/03/2025 18:15

Only once failed unexpectedly on some rust.

sunshineandrain82 · 10/03/2025 18:17

We have never had a car fail its MOT.
When advisories appear we get the work done.

Current car hasn't had an advisory in over 3 years. It's well maintained, serviced regularly

It’s completely standard to MOT first then service if both are being done at the same time. It’s called “test as presented” by the DVSA and it gives a more accurate picture of the failure rate of cars on the road.

There are other benefits as well, it means only one visit to a service ramp rather than having to visit again after MOT to fix any issues. It also prevents cars which might be scrapped from running up a service bill first, if I carry out a £300 service to your car then MOT it and you decide to scrap or sell it as a non-runner then you’ll still be paying the £300 bill.

People on here only doing 1200 miles a year is it really economical? Probably cheaper to get taxi / train / bus and save the hassle of mot, tax and insurance. My car does pass. My oh is good with cars and fixes issues if they arise, spark plugs, batteries, window wiper. 2018 car passed each one so far. Service every other year don't do a huge amount of miles about 6k a year.

IKnowASecret · 10/03/2025 18:23

I buy the cheapest car I can with the cleanest history. We are talking 2k second hand, diesel whatever... Run them for as long as possible. Often for many years tbh. Never understood how people afford new cars! So absolutely yes every year is a nail biter but choose carefully and ice had more passes than fails!

JohnofWessex · 10/03/2025 18:23

Two Kia's 57 Y& 67 plate

Dealer service & MOT at the same time

Oldest has 155K on the clock

Usual things that wear out, tyres, brakes, wiper blades etc but so far nothing major

Long distance relationship or family responsibility when you only see each other now and then :) more cost effective than train and you can do the odd big shop.

beesnests · 10/03/2025 18:25

13 years old, had it for 8. Never failed. 98k miles on the clock.

pleasedonotfeedme · 10/03/2025 18:25

Yes, usually. It’s a 10 y o Honda and very reliable. The only things it usually needs done at MOT is windscreen wipers. I do get tyres and brake pads replaced every few years at a service though.

Public transport is dire near me so yes worth it, I couldn't go food shopping or get to the dentist (30 mile drive) etc without it

PriOn1 · 10/03/2025 20:39

I’ve only had it just over a year and it needed very expensive repairs. My last car passed every year for the three years I had it. I’m hoping next year will be better.

Lulu1919 · 10/03/2025 20:57

I've been a car owner for over 35 years and have never failed an MOT

People that dont service their cars 😱do you not even do oil changes?! regardless of how many miles you do, oil degrades.

No.

It got topped up once I think. I did actually get it serviced this year as my DP was nagging me about it because I'd been doing a lot of miles the last year of so. But had it since 2016, that was the first service I'd got. I don't know if they changed the oil because they didn't tell me.
