Car passed Mot today, and did last year too. I'm thankful.
Is this normal?

How old is your car? Do you stay on top of maintenance etc?

Most fails are tyres, breaks, lights and things like that

SpringleDingle · 10/03/2025 16:05

Yes - it always passes.

Why isn’t it serviced?!

Never bothered, saved money, dint do much mileage really.
Done OK as it's passed twice.

Yes but I know I know nothing about cars, so at the slightest sign of something wrong I take it to the garage.

I also book for a Service and MOT at the same time which means they do the MOT, then any little failures they fix in the service and then re-MOT as part of the package. So unless something dramatic and also unnoticeable is wrong I would expect it to pass.

You’re meant to check your car more often than once a year. These are matters of safety.

Ok, would you like to come and "check my car" for me as you seem to have a lot to say to everyone on here. Most people don't have time or inclination to spend their weekend lying under their car or getting their ruler out to "check the tires". We pay people to do that.
I check my fluid levels and my tire pressure every time I fill the car with petrol. The rest is serviced according to the manual. Why the hell would I check my tires if I need to take it to the exact same garage to be replaced? They can check it and swap them if necessary. I know mine need doing in the next few months just from speaking to the garage during last service.

AuntieMarys · 10/03/2025 16:09

My car is 16 and has failed once.

Epli · 10/03/2025 16:10

Yes, it passes 100% time. We book annual service and an additional one before any bigger road trip.

sunleopard · 10/03/2025 16:13

I’m in Northern Ireland, the MOT system is operated by the Driver and Vehicle Agency at 15 test centres. Last year I waited 5 months for an MOT test appointment over 40 miles from home (I had much closer options but the wait was longer). I was frankly delighted that it passed.

RedPony1 · 10/03/2025 16:14

People that dont service their cars 😱do you not even do oil changes?! regardless of how many miles you do, oil degrades.

girlfriend44 · 10/03/2025 16:17

jasflowers · 10/03/2025 15:43

I'll tell you in a weeks time.... so far its passed all of its 6 mot's with only ever 2 advisories.

@girlfriend44 Cars not serviced are far more likely to fail a DPF and/or emissions, as well as go bang!

Well we are doing OK thanks. Tyre's etc are checked alot....

Mine is serviced one a year but usually minor, minor, major as it does such low mileage (about 3k a year)

You can do tyre tread on all 4 corners in less than 30 seconds with a 20 pence piece. As they are the only things keeping you on the tarmac, it’s not a bad idea to check they’re legal and in good condition. But hey, if losing control in wet conditions and that exhilarating state of never knowing if your tyre will blow out is your bag, please put your keys down the nearest drain. Take risks with your own safety, but you’re also playing with everyone else’s.

If you're grown up enough to own a car, you should take responsibility for its safety.

VanilleFraise · 10/03/2025 16:24

Nope - 17 year old Honda- always needs welding.

DramaAlpaca · 10/03/2025 16:24

I get mine serviced before I take it for its MOT, so if it didn't sail through I wouldn't be too happy about it.

Servicing covers different things to MOT tests.

Usually / just wear and tear - do have an annual service though

LikeSeriously · 10/03/2025 16:34

Normally Yes, we are in NI and the waiting list for MOT’s is shocking. Then can’t tax the car without MOT. Hubby paid £25.00 quid for under car wash to attend a last minute MOT one day before the tax expired. The car failed MOT as it was deemed to be too dirty for the examiner to see the bits he needed. Had to pay for another wash and another MOT. 🙈🙈

Iheartmysmart · 10/03/2025 16:35

I still remember my dad getting me out of bed on a Sunday morning to go out and check my car’s tyre pressure, oil and fluid levels. It wasn’t much appreciated as a hungover teenager but it’s a habit I still do now, although not on a weekly basis.

Anyway, my car is 17 years old and has only failed one MOT. It has a full service history and about 24k on the clock.

KellySeveride · 10/03/2025 16:48

Merryoldgoat · 10/03/2025 15:48

Pretty much as I book its annual service and then MOT straight afterwards so the service sorts it out and then the MOT is usually a non-issue.

You do realise the service and the mot have literally nothing to do with each other? Nothing they test for is what is dealt with at a service!

Oblomov25 · 10/03/2025 16:51

Always. Have always had cars that were decent, serviced, needed nothing to pass. To me this makes sense.

KellySeveride · 10/03/2025 16:51

11 year old car, owned for 3 years and has passed every MOT I have presented it for.

However my DH gave it the once over before its last mot last month and changed the track rod ends because he said they were going to fail. We do routine maintenance when it needs it. So it had new brakes last August because it needed them not because it failed an mot for them.

DazzlingCuckoos · 10/03/2025 16:52

Mine's just had its sixth MOT and it's passed each of them first time. It had a couple of advisories last year that my brake pads were wearing thin and this year the same thing came up (and were then replaced the same day).

Fingers crossed it means next year we'll be back to no advisories! It may get replaced before then though.

It's 8 years old now and has around 80,000 miles on the clock. It gets serviced once a year by a trustworthy local garage rather than a main dealer. I normally take it to a specialist tyre place a week or so before the MOT as they're more reasonably priced than my servicing garage, but I had a problem with one of my tyres not too long ago so had to get it replaced, so got them all checked then.

I don't think it's bad that I got 80,000 miles out of one set of brake pads and the two most recent tyre replacements were the original tyres on the car too!

Yes, but I book the service and say ‘can you also get it ready for the MOT’ - it’s not rocket science.
