Why do people shop at Primark?

sweetpumpkins · 08/03/2025 19:07

I know people will say it's because it's cheap. But the odd bits I've had from Primark in the past have fallen apart, looked crap or lost their shape after very few wears. So to me it's false economy, as I end up having to replace it soon anyway.

And it's not even that cheap anymore. I visited a shop recently to have a browse and many of the products are not much cheaper than other high street shops that are better quality. Supermarket clothing is often cheaper and lasts longer.

I've never understood the big fuss.

Extremely snobby question! We can’t all afford to shop in high end shops or somewhere like M&S where basic jeans cost £40.

I used to shop in Primark back in the day when I was slim. I kept a few dresses, I remember buying one then going back the next day for a different colour. They’re pure linen, one olive green, one black. I also have a brown linen dress I wore to a wedding, it has a broderie anglaise bodice, bit too sexy for me now! They’re all fabulous quality. I’ve only bought a body and a jumper in there in the past few years, I had to buy a whole new wardrobe after weight loss surgery so stuck to Vinted. I kept a couple of suitcases of slim clothes, those 3 dresses included. I might wear the brown one for prom.

There's never a thread asking why do people shop at Harrods, is there?😂

Take the labels out and you won’t be able to tell them apart from the more expensive brands load of fuss about nothing

Harrods doesn't tend to sell badly made tat that breaks or wears out within 5 or 6 uses though. (And most people don't shop at Harrods!)

I quite like their underwear and bras actually. Cheap and cheerful and can replace everything every 6 months or so.

Enicks86 · 08/03/2025 21:55

I love primark home bits, I've bought some really lovely bedding for my dds recently and the quality is amazing for the price.

LMFAO. Yeah right. Grin Suuuuuure you won't be able to tell Primark from top end name brands if you just take the label out. All the LOLz. 😂

Because some family’s budgets mean they can only afford to shop in places such as Primark. Don’t you think most people would buy good quality long lasting clothing if they could afford it? The same goes for things like food. The cost of living crisis means a lot of poorer families are forced to buy cheap less nutritious food compared to better off families who can afford fresh organic produce.

Posts like this make me think some people live in a bubble and don’t realise just how life is for those who don’t have much money to get by on.

I have very little spare money but wouldn't be seen dead in primark 🤣 I buy quality second hand stuff on vinted

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/03/2025 22:00

I get many fab things from Primark. I've got so much stuff that has lasted years. Skincare and lipsticks are great. I buy from many other places but still love it. It's far from as cheap as it used to be. However, even my young teen boy finds something he wants to get on a weekly basis. It's just a good all rounder I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

Every six months? That's awful quality and even worse behaviour

@BatchCookBabe Did you mean to be so bloody rude??

Astrabees · 08/03/2025 22:12

I have a Primark shacket in autumn shades, quite warm with a mohair effect to it. It has been admired by everyone at my book club and evening class and even random people in the street. A brushed cotton tartan dress also has had many admiring comments. If you select carefully there are some lovely items there. I don’t buy solely on price.

Mummadeze · 08/03/2025 22:12

I LOVE Primark. Their shoes are soft and comfortable mostly, their hoodies are great, I have bought good makeup from there and shampoo and conditioner and face wipes. I have found some nice fashionable clothes from time to time. Love the pyjamas. Honestly don’t know what’s not to like!

Ophy83 · 08/03/2025 22:15

The only things I have from there for myself are a couple of pairs of PJs I bought on holiday because I'd forgotten to pack some. But! They are some of my most comfortable PJs and they still look like new, whereas a couple of pairs I bought at Next around the same time for twice the price have completely frayed at the waistband and need chucking out.

My dd has a few bits, joggers etc. We went to the big store in Manchester a few weeks ago and she was loving browsing all the hair accessories, lip oil etc - all the same brands you see in miniso like cinnamaroll and hello kitty, but considerably cheaper.

I didn't buy any of it (as it would have been cumbersome to carry all day around the city) but was very tempted by some of the homeware - they had some really pretty wine glasses and serving plates.

Stresshead84x · 08/03/2025 23:03

I don't think it's as cheap as it used to be but some things are decent quality- I've got a top I bought when I was pregnant nearly 12 years ago and it's still in great condition.

If you don't have a lot of money sometimes you have to buy the cheaper things even if you know they won't last as long.

Sense of humour deserted you, has it?

My ds has growth spurts every week, he's just turned 4 and in size 6-7 clothes. I constantly get asked what primary he is in at school. If I bought anything other than primark clothing the expense would be ridiculous. He will most likley be in size 7-8 by Easter. I also get myself a few pairs of leggings for around the house

CoodleMoodle · 08/03/2025 23:40

I've got stuff I bought in Primark 10+ years ago and it's still perfectly fine. In all my years shopping in there (for me, DH and 2DC) I think we've had maybe one thing go wrong (I had a t-shirt that suddenly just tore along the back for no apparent reason).

Their underwear, socks and PJs are fantastic - again I've got some that have lasted years and years. My favourite perfume is from Primark, too, and I only wish they still made it. And I've got a lovely black faux fur jacket that is really warm and gets lots of compliments - I bought it for going to a party but wear it all the time, now! It was about £15 and it makes me smile every time I wear it.

H112 · 09/03/2025 01:18

Penneys (Primark) was created for the working class in dublin. It's become a global brand and they copy brands like next but 1/3 the price that's why.

Tereseta · 09/03/2025 01:23

I love their elizabeth arden dupe makeup @ £3. Kids stuff lasts for ages and is actually things they want to wear.
I think it is a very different offering to the Primark of 10 years ago. There are cheap basics and more mid ranged lines. Their homeward is good also.
Ours is huge and has a Greggs, nail bar and click and collect. What's not to like!

BobnLen · 09/03/2025 05:59

It's a bit like most of the high street shops, some good and some bad, just at some others you can pay a lot more and it's still bad.

YourChirpyFatball · 09/03/2025 06:18

My Primark dressing gown is approximately 23 years old and still washes back to its original condition.
I also bought around the same time a small men's dressing gown (for chilly nights downstairs) on the sale rail for £3.50. I have zero reason to replace either.

SamwiseTheBodyguard · 09/03/2025 06:29

I shop in Primark because I can't afford to buy everything we need in more expensive shops.

To be honest I've a few things from Primark where the quality has surprised me as they last well. I buy my stretchy black underwear from there, so comfortably and great quality.

We went just yesterday and after trying on what felt like a million pairs of jeans in every shop, I found a lovely pair in Primark for £16. No idea how they will wash as I've never bought jeans there before but we'll see. I'm losing weight at the moment so clothes for me are really a stop-gap thing instead of an investment in things I can wear for years.

DH also bought some really nice, thick jumpers yesterday, and thicker boxy style t-shirts. He's bought one before and it washes and irons extremely well compared to the ultra cheap, thin £3 t-shirts we have bought from there in the past.

Vinted. Cheaper than Primark by miles and you can actually buy decent quality clothing.

My only problem with Vinted is I can't try it on and return if not suitable. I'm a weird shape and don't know what size I am in many different brands so buying in Vinted is a risk for me. Photographs don't always show something as it appears either, I tried to re-sell a dress I bought on there for a wedding. I didn't end up wearing it myself as it was the wrong colour and the style looked awful on me. When I photographed it to sell I couldn't get the colour to translate on picture and it looked completely different. Ended up sending it to the charity shop after having it listed on Vinted for a few months.

Vinted for my kids on the other hand, who are standard size and shape, I absolutely love!

YouWouldntKnowWhatIMean · 09/03/2025 06:41

I buy from Primark because it's comparable quality to every other high street shop while being much cheaper. I have clothes from Primark that have lasted years. Baby and kids clothes have lasted through 3 boys and some were even passed on to friends as they'd washed and worn so well even after dc3. I've never had anything fall apart from primark - the only shops that have done that to me are M&S and River Island - I don't shop at either of those places anymore for their abysmal quality. £50 for a dress that can't last one round in the washing machine?! No thanks!

EspanaPorfavor · 09/03/2025 06:53

I have an amazing navy blazer I bought there about 20 years ago and a very similar silk Jaeger one. The Jaegar one has the hole in!

I also like to buy their kids plain sweatshirts and appliqué bits onto them, initials in liberty fabric or crocheted names. At the risk of sounding Meghan Markle, I like to take something simple and elevate it!!

hair ties and socks of course
