Why do people shop at Primark?

I know people will say it's because it's cheap. But the odd bits I've had from Primark in the past have fallen apart, looked crap or lost their shape after very few wears. So to me it's false economy, as I end up having to replace it soon anyway.

And it's not even that cheap anymore. I visited a shop recently to have a browse and many of the products are not much cheaper than other high street shops that are better quality. Supermarket clothing is often cheaper and lasts longer.

I've never understood the big fuss.

I have a jumper I bought at Primark in 2012 that’s still in great condition and gets worn all the time

This definitely doesn’t apply to all their stuff (far from it I’m sure) but not every item is poorly made

OMG! Recently DH asked why I was wearing a synthetic top I had recently bought from Asda and it was full of bobbles after only one wash! I was also very angry because we don't have money to waste and despise fast fashion because all the crap we don't use end up in coasts and oceans of poor countries, but I also hate going for shopping too often.

So he dragged me to M&S, you know.. quality. But I don't want to buy merino wool or cashmere which I will have to look after! Everything was either too short or too thick or rolled necks! They didn't have thin, pure cotton sweaters apart from the men's section which DH bought for himself and they turned out to be good quality. I bought again synthetic but you know, it's M&S so better! I washed it and it was similar crap.

Unfortunately have noticed a trend this year amongst lots of retailers (e.g. Mango, M&S, etc.) for really poorly made, poorly designed jumpers in synthetic materials like acrylic and polyester.

Some might even look nice when you try them on, but you can see a mile off that they’ll go bobbly as fuck within a couple of wears.

Annoying as well that they’ll put like 8% wool in so they can call it a ‘wool blend’.

Ive got stuff from there that's lasted years.
I assumed this would be a post about how unfairtrade it is, the clothes from most expensive stores pretty much come out of the same factories. Before you put yourself on the back for wasting five times the price for the same item of clothing.

My hairdresser buys 7 very cheap new plain white T shirts from Primark when he goes on a week’s holiday. He wears a new one every day then throws them. lol. So wasteful and I’d never do that but it does make me laugh.

Ilovecleaning · 09/03/2025 20:30

Another one I’ve just remembered. A former colleague - who was actually a terrible show off and constantly talked about money - had relatives over from abroad. She bought all new bedding from Primark for the guest beds then binned it when they went home. I thought that was pretty bad tbh.

I’m still wearing a pair of pyjamas I bought there five years ago.

My nightdress is even older, about 7

croydon15 · 09/03/2025 20:43

Their bedding are quite good, sheets wash well and don't need ironing
Also have a couple of jumpers which have been fine

Because I tried spending more but the clothes were just as crap

This

Sinkintotheswamp · 09/03/2025 21:21

I've just remembered. I still wear my primark nighties from after my c-section with DD. She's 16 now.

NewsdeskJC · 09/03/2025 21:28

It's literally the only clothes shop left in the local town.
Primark or nothing!

WillimNot · 09/03/2025 21:30

I stopped buying in Primark before lockdown. It's gotten very expensive now but still shocking quality. I also felt the make up influencers said was good was not great dupes at all, I prefer Aldi when they do make up.

I buy from Vinted or secondhand shops instead, better quality, mostly M&S in fact.

I have bits from primark that are at least a decade old and still good condition. DD has the most stunning dress that is very monsoon bridesmaidy which gets compliments whenever she wears it and was about £10. Stocking fillers, holiday sandals, hair accessories and little presents for the kids are brilliantly priced. Some of the materials are not great quality but there is some lovely stuff at great prices. They use paper bags and the staff are usually nice.

Carinattheliqorstore1 · 09/03/2025 22:04

for me, I love their pyjamas and leggings. Also their socks

Moonlightdust · 09/03/2025 22:10

I have never successfully bought anything for myself there. Even when it first opened and I was a lot younger (!) the store would feel
overwhelming and chaotic. I never found the quality or fit of the clothes to be good.
However I did used to get some clothing for the kids there years ago (not now they’re older) but found some nice items.

PassingStranger · 09/03/2025 22:25

Because they want too. Easy one.

DrCoconut · 09/03/2025 22:43

Because you can treat yourself to something new a couple of times a year even if you're on a tight budget. Quality, ethics etc sometimes have to be sidelined when you can't afford better.

Beanus · 09/03/2025 23:04

Their brushed cotton pyjamas are wonderful. My daughter gets a new set at Christmas every few years and the oldest ones are still going strong..

VanillaImpulse · 09/03/2025 23:23

I still have my Primark fleecy pink dressing gown that I bought for £5 around 2004. It still looks fine even though I wear it absolutely every day. Best £5 I've spent.
I do agree about the prices have increased a lot recently though

BlackBeltInOrigami · 10/03/2025 05:44

Like a previous poster, I shop mainly from charity shops and am always shocked at new prices for clothing/shoes/accessories. It’s a right rip off. I was recently after a denim jacket, nothing fancy, just something I could slip on for day/night. M&S £35, Primark £18, identical (the shops are next door to each other so easy to contrast/compare) Why pay twice as much?

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 10/03/2025 05:46

Their adaptive jeans are great for my wheelchair user son

doodahdayy · 10/03/2025 05:47

Still cheaper and similar quality to other shops. Lots of choice

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 10/03/2025 06:05

I have small boobs and their bras fit perfectly.

Also have a few vest tops hat I've had for YEARS.

On a similar note- years ago I was chatting to a mum a sort of knew in the primary school playground. We must have been talking about packing for holidays. I will always always remember that she told me she bought loads of stuff from a primark to go on holiday with and then binned it all before they came home.she saw it as disposable clothing. She wasn’t that well off either.

i am currently sitting here drinking my morning cuppa in my Primark vest- which is very old, warm Primark socks men’s joggers. Oh have a very old Aldi dressing gown on.

Flossy1985 · 10/03/2025 07:15

I don’t shop there for myself but I have bought a lot of my 5month olds clothes from them. The cost of baby clothes is ideal when he is growing so quickly he is super long and we are struggling to get clothes to last him.
