Why do people shop at Primark?

sweetpumpkins · 08/03/2025 19:07

I know people will say it's because it's cheap. But the odd bits I've had from Primark in the past have fallen apart, looked crap or lost their shape after very few wears. So to me it's false economy, as I end up having to replace it soon anyway.

And it's not even that cheap anymore. I visited a shop recently to have a browse and many of the products are not much cheaper than other high street shops that are better quality. Supermarket clothing is often cheaper and lasts longer.

I've never understood the big fuss.

I have a Primark dressing gown I bought when pregnant with dd2. She's 16 now. It's not in perfect condition but it's a lighter waffle fabric that's ideal in summer.
I don't shop there much but remember it being handy for pjs etc.

I only bought socks, underwear and nightwear in Primark (it’s called Pennys here in Ireland) until I got diagnosed with advanced cancer 18 months ago. I haven’t worked since and am living on social welfare. I have lost a huge amount of weight and had to buy a whole new wardrobe. Now I adore Primark, I have picked up some amazing stuff and the quality is absolutely fine. It would never occurred to me to even consider buying their clothes before.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 08/03/2025 19:29

Primark is a shop where you have to be choosy. There are some cheap nasty fabrics, some garments designed for teenagers (or those that like to show their belly buttons) but hidden amongst that there are some good pieces including 100% cotton tops.

For me one of the biggest draws is the sizing. I'm really small and in many shops a size six is big on me. Primark do a 4 and and a 6 and therefore fit much better.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 08/03/2025 19:31

They are also great for this to adapt for kids for the million different dress up days at school, Christmas jumper day etc.

It might be a false economy, but if you're on the bones of your arse and your kids need clothes, you're going to buy what you can afford at the time, even if you know it will need replaced again in a few months.

It's about the same quality as everywhere else in that price range, and cheaper than charity shops as well anyway.

This.. many of us can't afford to pay the bigger prices

Great for basic clothing, makeup and accessories, I get joggers and white T-shirts for DD for school, hoodies are good too.

They also have a variety of ranges that other shops don’t, that I think are a brilliant idea and want to support. They were one of the first high street stores to do period pants, they have a menopause range, recently launched their Adaptive range with accessibility features for disabled users, all their clothing is available in very small sizes and plus sizes, they do plus size bras too. They seem to actively try to cater to as many customers needs as they can, unlike stores like NewLook or H&M who have maternity and plus size ranges but only sell them online.

TimeForSprings · 08/03/2025 19:32

They do 28" waist trousers that are so small they fit my 16 year old with a 25"waist.
26" trousers are impossible to find!

And quality is good enough that he grows out if them before they disintegrate.

EvolvedAlready · 08/03/2025 19:32

People shop there who like fashion but maybe can’t afford other more expensive shops.
However, I always felt this was a catch22, as you tend to spend more than you expected in there. Then as the saying goes, buy cheap, but twice.

I do like to look around. I rarely ever buy anything for DC there as they are really light and I’ve had colour transfer to clothes and their skin.

Most stuff is polyester or similar, just awful for your skin and even worse for the environment.

It serves a purpose for sure, but I now buy far less clothes and buy better quality. As a result I think I spend less than I used to.

Needmorelego · 08/03/2025 19:33

I shop at Primark and their clothes last for ages. I've literally had some bits for years.
I've never had anything wear out too quickly. Some items only got "retired" because I outgrew them.
To me they are just normal clothes at normal prices but some bits do seem to be getting more expensive.
I'm really into their Home department at the moment and they have some lovely side plates - but they are £4.50 for just one and that feels quite a lot for one plate.
I used to buy t-shirts from M+S. They always would shrink. So I stopped buying them.

NeedWineNow · 08/03/2025 19:33

I've got stuff from Primark that I've had for years, and has certainly lasted longer than higher priced bits from other brands. I really like the Primark Edit range, and I have just bought a really nice classic coat from there.

Their bedding is good and a friend who works at M&S really rates their towels over M&S. I find their homeware good generally.

People will shop where their pockets allow, and who has the right to say that they shouldn't. You don't want to, fine, but I'm not going to decry anyone's shopping preferences.

I’ve never even set foot in a Primark. Not out of principle, I’ve just never been near one.

Why? If it’s about where the clothes are made you wouldn’t go in many shops!

Fagli · 08/03/2025 19:35

I haven’t shopped there since I was at uni, but still have some clothes from there that are now nearly 20yrs old!! Also really good selling value on eBay/vinted, think I got more selling than I spent on them.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 08/03/2025 19:35

It's cheap, kids growing like wilds and actually some of it is decent quality.

shrumps · 08/03/2025 19:36

Their pyjamas are the comfiest ever and I have had some pairs for years

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 08/03/2025 19:36

God only knows why?

GroovyChick87 · 08/03/2025 19:36

Affordable for me and my large family.

GroovyChick87 · 08/03/2025 19:37

Plus I love their homeware section.

TickingAlongNicely · 08/03/2025 19:37

They do long line tshirts.

M&s tshirts ate very short in the torso.

theotherplace · 08/03/2025 19:38

I have 10% wool sweaters and 100% cotton t shirts from there that have washed very well and I've had for years now. Also some straight leg jeans in washes that look pricier, I often get asked if it's Zara (which imo sells just as much rubbish).

Some of it is tat but if you read the care label it lasts well.

RaspberryRipple2 · 08/03/2025 19:38

I don’t actually think the quality is different to the basics from other high street stores, I’ve had loads of t shirts from Joules and M&S that shrink and I only get a few wears before they are far too short. The accessories and things are bargainous though, eg hair bobbles 20 for £1, we go through loads and they are nearly £5 anywhere else. The quality is no different.

BobnLen · 08/03/2025 19:41

A lot of it is no worse than other high street shops.

FionnulaTheCooler · 08/03/2025 19:41

Because I like the character themed stuff they have there. I've had some lovely Disney and Sanrio stuff from there that DD has been very happy with.

RhaenysRocks · 08/03/2025 19:42

Noone has beaten me too it..the Vimes boots analogy about how a really really good pair of boots would last twenty years but cost a year's wages. Buying a new pair every year might ultimately end up costing more and you have less good boots but it's what most people can afford month to month. Add to that, as some have said that actually the quality can be entirely comparable to more expensive high street shops and it's completely understandable. To truly shop ethically, buy British, not support sweatshop labour overseas and poor contracts here is simply unaffordable for most.

Whoknew24 · 08/03/2025 19:42

primarks not my thing, but I do get holiday things. These are things like playsuits etc that me and my kids will only wear once on holiday. My Nana buys me pyjamas from here and I like those.

I think the quality isn’t great or sizing and honestly find the shop far too busy. I’ve never been a fan.

i wear Calvin Klein, Zara, Ralph Lauren and Guess . All good quality and wash nice 😊

AlphabetBird · 08/03/2025 19:42

I bought a £95 jumpsuit from hush that was a real treat. Absolutely shite, hems falling down, cheap print, washed terribly.

I’ve also got primary pyjamas from university 20 odd years ago that are still in great shape. I can’t see an obvious difference in quality between most of the high street tbh.
