Why do people shop at Primark?

I know people will say it's because it's cheap. But the odd bits I've had from Primark in the past have fallen apart, looked crap or lost their shape after very few wears. So to me it's false economy, as I end up having to replace it soon anyway.

And it's not even that cheap anymore. I visited a shop recently to have a browse and many of the products are not much cheaper than other high street shops that are better quality. Supermarket clothing is often cheaper and lasts longer.

I've never understood the big fuss.

I use primark to bulk out for holidays as we usually go for 3-4 weeks.

I also use primark as my DS is a chewer and even the most expensive brand tops don't last more than one or two wears for him

Cheap and cheerful. You get what you pay for; if it gets ruined or bobbled it gets thrown. Making it affordable to keep up with ever changing styles.

I used to buy some of the children's clothes there when they were growing quickly. The quality actually seemed fine. A lot of things were 100% cotton.
I've only ever bought myself one top there. That was about 12 years ago, and it's still going strong.
My teenage daughter and her friends shop there because it's cheap and they only have their pocket money to spend. They also do the latest fashions.

I'm in bed. There are 2 winter blankets on here, bought for £5 each in Primark 15 years ago. Warm, decorative and apparently indestructible.

I love their pyjamas, they last ages! Also good for little bits like socks, accessories etc. and their makeup is surprisingly good!! I don’t really buy clothes from Primark anymore as they don’t last….although hit and miss as I have a jumper and some jeans from Primark that have lasted years and I’ve worn to death.
I enjoy a browse around Primark still, but started to use vinted and charity shops more these days.
clothes these days are made to only last a few washes so that we buy more…so frustratingly they’re crap on purpose, even more expensive stores.

itsgettingweird · 10/03/2025 08:07

Because the stuff I buy from primark does last.

I buy the cuffed tracksuit bottoms at £7 a pair and I'm on second winter of them.

I buy the cosy leggings at £7 a pair and they are also on second winter.

They are only worn once before washing as I have them for work.

I also buy other stuff from there such as gloves, bags and cheap crocs and even some travel cutlery sets etc and they've all lasted too.

I find it interesting that @sweetpumpkins started this thread to slag off Primark, not never came back after OP.

I have clothes from Primark that I wear regularly and bought years ago.
Maybe it's a hit or a miss in terms of quality.

Years ago they were better quality I think. Nowadays they're a bit of a false economy and not as cheap as they were.

CatsnCoffee · 10/03/2025 10:14

I’ve bought my boots from there for the last 10 years or so. I’m only on my third pair and the previous pair I still wear too. They see me through 9 months of the year, day in/day out and don’t leak. The soles and heels don’t wear down. My DH insists on Monkey boots and DMs. He can’t wear the Monkey boots in rain because they leak and the the DMs I once bought myself ended up on eBay. They were the most uncomfortable footwear I’ve ever tried + over-priced!

Because I tried spending more but the clothes were just as crap

This. I have some expensive brands and quite honestly, there is very little difference in the quality on a lot of it.

I actually think the opposite. I think the quality has improved over the years.

Agentscullyandmulder · 10/03/2025 17:19

I don't find if that cheap either, I did get a load of refused pjs for my sound operation really. I've had quite a bit from Vinted recently

MsDitsy · 10/03/2025 21:36

I've been In 3 different Primarks in 2 towns in the past. I bought a couple of items. The shops all have the same distinctive smell about them that I really don't like and can't seem to get it out of the items I bought so donated them. When I mentioned it to a friend, she said it was from the sweatshops the clothes are made in and I can't get that thought out of my head so won't go in now.

Daftypants · 11/03/2025 05:53

I’m regularly disappointed with the quality of clothing from many shops these days ..sigh .
Having said that I have some pairs of Primark pyjamas that were my daughters and she left them behind when she left home 9 years ago .
They are still going strong !
A nice brushed cotton flannel

LittleBigHead · 12/03/2025 08:47

Like PPs, I choose carefully in Primark and only buy their good quality basics. Their 100% cotton long sleeved T-shirts are great under jumpers in the winter. And I have a lovely summer coat I bought over 15 years ago that I wear a lot in the summer and always get compliments about.

The polyester crap they sell - meh.

What I’ve noticed is that there are fewer pieces made from, say 100 % cotton, linen, or wool (they used to produce pure wool and even cashmere). So they’ve kept the prices fairly consistent and dropped the quality.

But I make a lot of my clothes - if I had to buy dresses and trousers, no way would I buy from Primark. It’s all polyester.

LittleBigHead · 12/03/2025 08:49

And many far more expensive retailers use sweatshops. Price isn’t a guarantee of unseated labour. Sadly.

Yeah this,

I tried not shopping at Primark for 10 years because of the sweatshop rumours but guess what? My boycott didn't actually change that. Fuck it, I can't police the world.

In amongst the tat you get the occasional Gem .

Indeed! I still have some of their 100% cashmere jumpers from around 15 years ago.
