Why do people shop at Primark?

sweetpumpkins · 08/03/2025 19:07

I know people will say it's because it's cheap. But the odd bits I've had from Primark in the past have fallen apart, looked crap or lost their shape after very few wears. So to me it's false economy, as I end up having to replace it soon anyway.

And it's not even that cheap anymore. I visited a shop recently to have a browse and many of the products are not much cheaper than other high street shops that are better quality. Supermarket clothing is often cheaper and lasts longer.

I've never understood the big fuss.

I get nearly all clothes secondhand and have had some stuff from Primark which has lasted much better than I expected. Including

  • a winter coat which was washed many times and went through both my lively dirt magnet boys
-several pairs of jogging bottoms which stayed up well on tween DS who is tall and skinny (unlike those from some other brands which just aren't tight enough on the waist) and again have been washed and washed and been fine. -some t shirts I bought in a charity shop because I liked the print and are still going several years later
  • a Christmas jumper also via a charity shop which has been worn quite a bit and washed several times and still fine.
So I have been pleasantly surprised in general.

I like their plain T-shirts and vests. They’re also good for things like shorts for holidays. I bought a pair of sandals for £5 thinking I’ll be lucky to get a week out them and they are still going strong 5 years later, I take them on every holiday.

Other people have different experiences to you.

CrushingOnRubies · 08/03/2025 21:21

Because it's cheap. And say you need a cheap accessory like a clutch for an outfit you'll only wear a couple of times. Or it's wear a colour for cancer research day at school and purple really isn't your colour.

Tbf I do have stuff from primark which I have had for years and wear regularly. They do good basic plain clothes like vest tops

lapert · 08/03/2025 21:24

I find Primark quality fine. It's not as good as M&S, but it lasts for my 2 DDs to wear for one season, and that's as long as I'll ever need it. I never tumble dry anything, and we have a fair number of clothes to rotate through (we get lots of other clothes given to us), so I guess each item doesn't get worn loads of times. We have some Primark items handed down to us which have been worn by 2 nieces, and then worn by my 2 DDs, so those have lasted pretty well!

Flibberdigibbit · 08/03/2025 21:24

There is something very "Let them eat cake" about this question.

pmanswer · 08/03/2025 21:24

There’s so few options in my lunch break in Harrow it’s an option of Primark or tx maxx

Needmorelego · 08/03/2025 21:25

The OP never came back......

DiscoBeat · 08/03/2025 21:26

Fast fashion. It doesn't need to last.
But actually I needed some black heels when I went out in my trainers to an event about 10 years ago, but realized on the train that I'd left them behind. I got some classic styled black heels from a nearby Primark and they were the most comfortable ones I've ever worn! I went back and bought 2 more pairs but the first pair lasted for years and I still have the third pair.

Katbum · 08/03/2025 21:27

Kids clothes are decent value and last as long as they need to. I don’t often buy adult
clothes there but a jumper I got last winter lasted longer than a 4x more expensive one from Uniqlo.

BillyILash · 08/03/2025 21:28

Only ever bought a handful of bits in there for me, mainly sales stuff, bought a fair amount for DCs which lasted ok. Never been a fan of the adult clothing, sizes and quality but I did score a winter coat for £7 this year, it’s done me through the darker months but it’s worth nothing more than putting in the clothing bin for rags now, unlike other winter coats that have lasted me years, but it was £7 and lasted me 4 months so I’m not complaining.

CrushingOnRubies · 08/03/2025 21:29

Over 15 years ago I brought a smart dress coat from Atmosphere / Primark but it's not called Primark on O'Connell street in Dublin. And it's still going strong, don't wear daily but for an occasional coat when you need to be smarter it's perfect.

Londonrach1 · 08/03/2025 21:29

Because the clothes are better than a lot of the more expensive clothes shops... The little bags are amazing too .. honestly .. Primark is amazing for children and teen clothes. ... After struggling to get dd pe clothes I found all in Primark and the quality is amazing.

Irisilume · 08/03/2025 21:30

It's fine for some things, I've had t-shirts from Primark for years. I also like their nail varnish and it's good for hair clips and whatnot.

tunainatin · 08/03/2025 21:30

They don't play music in their shops, so I can actually concentrate on shopping. Quality is hit and miss, I agree, but no more than other high street shops.

henlake7 · 08/03/2025 21:31

I really don't think I've noticed a quality difference between Primark and other High st brands, even with things like shoes or coats.
This year I picked up some super comfy chunky brogues that have already gotten me compliments.
Also a gorgeous faux leather jacket for £10 in the sale that I'm wearing to death.
Not to mention my work shoes are from Primark and they are holding up brilliantly as I'm on my feet all the time (the synthetic thing doesn't bother me as I'm vegan anyways).

Finally there are the fur lined leggings which I live in all winter.....best product ever!

I find their shoes and boots very comfortable. Like you can just put them on and go. No breaking in.

DiscoBeat · 08/03/2025 21:31

I will definitely try their knickers too after seeing some of the comments on here. Also my teenaged son does a lot of sport and likes their white sport socks. He has size 11 feet and as that's the 'up to' size on most socks he needs the extra stretch, which he gets here.

YearsofYears · 08/03/2025 21:35

I'm Irish originally and have always shopped in 'Penneys' the Irish trademark name, it's an Irish company. I'm selective about what I buy there, lots wouldn't fit me anyway and generally keep and wear things for years. For example bought a black dressy winter coat there, three years ago, still going strong.
Like others I enjoy the beauty selection. It's an affordable treat I suppose.

TooFancyNancy · 08/03/2025 21:36

@DiscoBeat not to de-rail the thread and I’m sure you already know, but just incase; check out sports direct for socks. My Dh has size 11/12 feet and they do a multipack of sport socks near the tills that is specifically for size 11 or 12+ rather than the standard sizes you get everywhere else!

I still have clothes I bought from Primark a decade ago.

If they fall apart after a few wears, you aren't looking after them properly.

Their supply chain is the same as most of the more expensive stores. The only difference is, they make more profit off it.

FrozzyBrain · 08/03/2025 21:40

I found a thick, 100% cotton striped long sleeved top in Primark for a fiver.
A much thinner equivalent in M&S was four times the price.

Inthebleakmidwinter1 · 08/03/2025 21:44

Because you often pay more for branding and design bit that doesn’t necessarily equate to quality

AngelinaFibres · 08/03/2025 21:45

The rich man can buy excellent quality shoes. When the shoes start to show wear he can have them reheeled and resoled multiple times. The same pair of shoes are worth a regular polish too and so last more than 30 years. The poor man cannot afford to buy shoes like that. He buys cheap shoes that fall apart after a few months and are cheaper to replace, with another cheap pair, than to repair. That is why people buy from Primark

Newname71 · 08/03/2025 21:47

I find their sizing shit but their make up range is fab!
