Why do people shop at Primark?

I know people will say it's because it's cheap. But the odd bits I've had from Primark in the past have fallen apart, looked crap or lost their shape after very few wears. So to me it's false economy, as I end up having to replace it soon anyway.

And it's not even that cheap anymore. I visited a shop recently to have a browse and many of the products are not much cheaper than other high street shops that are better quality. Supermarket clothing is often cheaper and lasts longer.

I've never understood the big fuss.

Because I tried spending more but the clothes were just as crap

JMSA · 08/03/2025 19:09

I have clothes from Primark that I wear regularly and bought years ago.
Maybe it's a hit or a miss in terms of quality.

Caffeineneedednow · 08/03/2025 19:10

I used to because they were cheep and I was a student. I am also overweight so was constantly saying I'll buy this and it will do untill I can lose the weight.

I have now lost most the weight and buy mostly next and m and s but I but them from vinted ad I'm not a student but still skint 😂

Topseyt123 · 08/03/2025 19:10

I stopped years ago. I never bought much in there. It's cheaper and might appear good value, but it's tat!

TiredEyes25 · 08/03/2025 19:10

My primark items have lasted better than some of my m&s items

However it's also good for things for the dds, heatless curlers , those headbands to wear whilst doing make up, nail Polish hair accessories etc.
They also love their pj's, fake bodies and cosy socks. Again the pj's have washed better than other high street brands.

XenoBitch · 08/03/2025 19:11

It's cheap, and I tend to live in plain stuff. They always have plain t-shirts etc.

JMSA · 08/03/2025 19:13

I'd rather get a Primark voucher as a gift than one for anywhere else.

I know that sounds really sad, but I genuinely just really like it.

HelenWheels · 08/03/2025 19:14

they are cheaper than M & s which is the shop next door in my town.
i have a primark cardigan
i dont normally step foot in primark

HelenWheels · 08/03/2025 19:14

i have a primark winter coat, nothing the matter with it, it was great

NotTheDebtDoctorWithTheHungryScalpel · 08/03/2025 19:16

It might be a false economy, but if you're on the bones of your arse and your kids need clothes, you're going to buy what you can afford at the time, even if you know it will need replaced again in a few months.

It's about the same quality as everywhere else in that price range, and cheaper than charity shops as well anyway.

schoolsoutforever · 08/03/2025 19:16

I have occasionally bought things from Primark in the past. I don't enjoy shopping there because it's hectic and messy. Some items from Primark have been OK. I still have a nice jumper from years ago;it's a sloppy, lounge jumper for me but I also love it - very comfortable. However, I have bought a fair few things that are now rubbish because of varying quality. I mainly avoid now.

Barleysugar86 · 08/03/2025 19:16

Some things in primark are really good value- the black jogging bottoms for PE, for school tights, summer pj sets. We usually go in for set things. It's one of a number of places we look when we are after something and I find it a useful addition.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 08/03/2025 19:17

It cheap, it's great for growing kids, they sell a lot of basics made from natural fibres. I have items from there at least 10 years old and have been worn often. Similarly I've bought items from higher end shops that have been man made cheap materials and have fallen apart quickly. Selected items are very good value and decent quality.

pizzaHeart · 08/03/2025 19:18

I shop at Primark mostly for DD and DH , less for myself - I don’t fit in their sizes. It’s mostly for T-shirts, hoodies, socks, pants, sometimes sweatshirts, slippers, bath sponges. Their T-shirts are absolutely normal cotton T-shirts, we wear them several seasons
I don’t think there is a perfect shop where you can buy everything perfect - it’s always hit and miss more or less.

BIossomtoes · 08/03/2025 19:18

I’m still wearing a pair of pyjamas I bought there five years ago.

AquaPeer · 08/03/2025 19:18

You can get loads of stuff that isn’t going be worn very much, cheaply

Popfan · 08/03/2025 19:18

Bought my son some plain hoodies for work and college (training to be a carpenter) they have been fantastic, wash well and lasted brilliantly.

Thewholeplaceglitters · 08/03/2025 19:20

I’ve got some primarni vest tops & t-shirts that are as old as dc1 who was born in 2012.

Oh, as a shopping experience, it sucks. It's incredibly draining! But for me, it's just about worth it.

TheMorels · 08/03/2025 19:20

I’ve never even set foot in a Primark. Not out of principle, I’ve just never been near one.

NiftyMintShark · 08/03/2025 19:21

I live in the Channel Islands. A trip to Primark is a must when in the UK. Very hard to get reasonable clothes here.

Nanny1983 · 08/03/2025 19:23

I think it depends on the age bracket of the shopper .

Someone who wouldn’t step foot in Primark might be an m&s or next shopper . Yet to me as a 41 yr old I find the clothes frumpy in Next and m&s and apart from the odd bits which are ok you certainly wouldn’t find a teenager shopping in next or m&s .

So I think Primark attracts different ages .

Some people can’t affford to be picky and they haven’t got the money to spend on clothes that are going to last 10 years .

You do you at the end of the day . If you don’t like Primark clothes don’t shop there but it’s not fair to judge people who do or can’t afford to shop elsewhere .

I agree. I've bought clothes from there that I still wear, yet last jeans I bought were wide enough at the waist to have worn when I was 3 months pregnant lol.

Luckily I have a clothes bank nearby which gets recycled, or goes to refugees etc.

Teanbiscuits33 · 08/03/2025 19:25

I can’t comment on the quality of primark recently, but I have jumpers from there that I’ve had for years. If anything, people should be asking why people shop at peacocks - significantly worse quality than primark in my experience and around double the price! God knows how it’s still going. On the rare occasion I’ve bought something from there, it’s fell apart within a week 🤣

taxguru · 08/03/2025 19:26

Because more expensive clothes are crap too, and fall apart just as quickly. If you know that your clothes aren't going to last whichever supermarket or popular high street chain you buy from, you may as well get them even cheaper from Primark.

You really have to go upmarket considerably and pay a lot more to get clothes from the High Street that actually last.
