Why do people shop at Primark?

I know people will say it's because it's cheap. But the odd bits I've had from Primark in the past have fallen apart, looked crap or lost their shape after very few wears. So to me it's false economy, as I end up having to replace it soon anyway.

And it's not even that cheap anymore. I visited a shop recently to have a browse and many of the products are not much cheaper than other high street shops that are better quality. Supermarket clothing is often cheaper and lasts longer.

I've never understood the big fuss.

Best pants I’ve ever bought

TheAmusedQuail · 08/03/2025 20:17

In the last year I've bought a backpack and a cardigan from Primark. The backpack I use every day and the cardigan I've worn at least 2 or 3 times a week through the winter. Both look like new. The backpack has actually lasted longer than the previous one I had which cost 3 times as much.

lavendarwillow · 08/03/2025 20:18

I find Primark to be much better quality than H&M.

Ohshutupdavidyoutwat · 08/03/2025 20:18

Is there a big fuss as you describe? Some people shop there many don't. I go in for basics like leggings and vests, they are way cheaper than what I can find in the supermarket and last for years so yeah why not.

Beeloux · 08/03/2025 20:18

I normally shop at charity shops for myself so shopping at Primark is a bit of a treat. 😅 I find their bras great and I have clothes from years ago which have never lost their shape.
I do agree they’ve became much more expensive in recent years but if you scour the sale racks you can find some good deals. I bought a lovely summer maxi dress a few weeks ago which was reduced from £25 to £3.

Printedword · 08/03/2025 20:19

I have 15 year old t shirts that are still in top condition. 2 very good cardigans and a menswear round neck sweater that cost me £4 in the sale that's really nice. Smart flat shoes for chiefly indoor events are very well worth buying as I don't really wear shoes at any other time

CerealPosterHere · 08/03/2025 20:19

Oh and I also got some Edit range cropped balloon black trousers for £26 which are a dupe of the Cos £85 ones. Someone on here says she has both and can’t tell the difference between them.

I find Primark to be much better quality than H&M.

Yes my teen daughter went through a H+M teeny tiny t-shirt phase.
Couple of washes and those t-shirts were the size of a hanky 😁

When you’re living on welfare payments, it doesn’t really matter that things are a false economy. When you have money, you spend it and want to get as much out of it as possible. Needing to replace it is a future problem. When I was on disability allowance, everything I had was the cheapest available option. Everything was always falling apart as a consequence. It was very frustrating. There was always a long list of stuff that needed replacing, constantly getting added to.

valder · 08/03/2025 20:21

There's an awful lot of snobbery about places like Primark. The same manufacturer probably supplies many other stores, but a different label adds ££££s.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 08/03/2025 20:23

I have vests that I wear almost every day from primark that have lasted probably a decade.

They also do the best sports trainer socks.

My favourite skirt is from primark.

Wheelbarrowracer · 08/03/2025 20:24

The stretchy trainer footies
The nylon footies
Fleece lined leggings
Pjs
Lounge wear
The occasional gem.

Most stuff is too short for me in there though.

Jade520 · 08/03/2025 20:25

I love Primark, I've bought a few Next jumpers in the sale and they've bobbled terribly. I haven't had that from anything in Primark. I live in their men's t-shirts that were £2.50 each and I've got a few skirts in there that I've had for years. I don't really shop anywhere else now.

IcedPurple · 08/03/2025 20:25

I'm another one who has Primark clothes which have lasted well over years.

Some of it is crap, yes, but the same can be said for other shops where the clothes cost several times the price. They also have a decent range of cosmetics and homewares. So what's the issue?

madaffodil · 08/03/2025 20:30

One of my nicest and longest-lasting duvet covers is from Primark. They are also my go-to shop for black long-sleeved t-shirts. And socks. Many socks. And Christmas jumpers. I also buy hair bobbles and their reading glasses. I don't live near a branch though, so only go maybe once every year or so.

mummydoris2006 · 08/03/2025 20:30

I see people comment that the quality is crap at Primark and think I must just be really lucky. I buy all my PJ's from there, they're lovely and soft and I get my underwear from there too.
I've had some really lovely outfits from there as well as many winter coats. I love that I can mix their pieces with my costlier designer items to make a statement outfit.

NeedWineNow · 08/03/2025 20:30

Forgot to mention in my earlier post that their gym wear is great, and they actually do trainer socks in sizing, i.e 6-8, rather than size 4-7 (or 6-12 in the men's range). Honourable mention for their tights as well. Opaques are great and last, and their fishnets held up very well in 3 performances of a strenuous tap dance routine last year!

Cocoalover · 08/03/2025 20:31

It's definitely hit or miss at primark. My favourite and most comfortable pj bottoms are from primark, I've had them for years. Having said that, I've thrown a whole lot of pjs out from primark after a few washes because they've either fallen apart or shrunk. My most recent buy was a lovely large fleece throw from primark (£16) and it's such excellent quality!

ThePartingOfTheWays · 08/03/2025 20:35

Two reasons.

One is that the quality increasingly isn't any worse than more expensive high street shops. At minimum, you can't rely on other high streets shops lasting or washing better. They might, but it won't be a surprise if they don't.

Second is that even if it was demonstrably worse, people sometimes still have to buy the cheapest because that's what they can afford. Especially for kids who may not be in it long anyway.

I get most stuff second hand so it's all one to me, but it's obvious to me why the place is so very successful.

Hairoit · 08/03/2025 20:35

Teen DD loves to shop here. Fashion will change in a year and she won’t want the clothes anyway. I’m in my 40s so tend to buy more good quality stuff that will last years and with better materials to flatter my wobbly stomach

Bryonyberries · 08/03/2025 20:36

It is more expensive now than it used to be but I found it very useful for children’s clothes when mine were little. You could get several tee shirts and shorts for a couple pound each, great for getting mucky on the beach or at nursery.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/03/2025 20:36

My DD had a set of their white cotton bedding that was really nice .

I buy TShirts and lounge trousers for my DS there
DD likes the jumpers
DH likes the plain TShirts

During the week is much quieter than weekends .

Some things I know will be horrible material before I touch them. Other things I think "Urgh , one wash and that will be a rag"
But I have bought some nice things , you just need to look

Their make-up is Leaping Bunny

BashfulClam · 08/03/2025 20:37

Have primark t shirts I bought 15 years ago. Still wear them and they look fine.

PyongyangKipperbang · 08/03/2025 20:37

It used to be cheap so it was good for a "one off" outfit that you didnt want to spend much on.

But now it really isnt. Sainsburys clothes are on a par price wise and are better quality. And shopping there isnt like a jumble sale like it is in Primark (and TK Maxx).

Covertcollie · 08/03/2025 20:39

I have never set foot in there as it’s well known to be a vile sweat shop.
