Would you be grossed out by homemade baked good in care package?

I am helping my sister put together care packages for her wedding. She is paying for the wedding party to stay in a posh hotel for a few nights. We are going to leave little care packages on the bed. I have an exceptional brownie recipe and was going to leave a trio of favours in the box. But sister’s SIL says she would never eat a homemade treat due to hygiene reasons.

obviously I will be clinically clean and wil even wear a hair net as I couldn’t think of anything worse than someone finding a hair.

Who is being weird?

I won’t eat homemade stuff from people I don’t know sorry.

It stems from a neighbour of ours when I was a kid who used to make celebration cakes…except she lived in an actual shit hole, cat shit stuck to the carpet, the cat was once spotted curled up on top of a cooling fruit cake having a nap! It was the type of house in which you showered when you got home from there. Lovely woman, heart of gold - but disgusting hygiene.

I’m known for being a bit like Monica from friends. I know the bride’s side would have no problem but I don’t know about the groom’s family/mates.

Sorry I probably wouldn't either. Like that I know a house where the cats used to stick their heads in the jugs of sauces and sit on cakes etc.

Would love to try your recipe though.

She is. Does she think every wedding cake she's ever eaten has been made in a factory?

Evaka · 07/03/2025 15:40

What?! Does your friend know how rank business premises can be? That's a super ott reaction.

Worried861 · 07/03/2025 15:40

It wouldn't occur to me not to eat it but I am very lax with caring about these things 😂

Allshadowlylined · 07/03/2025 15:41

I would think it was a lovely touch but I wouldn't eat it.

MojoMoon · 07/03/2025 15:42

Make them, tie a label on saying "Homemade by BusyTrayBake, contains nuts and gluten" and then either people eat them or they don't eat them, their choice.

I would happily eat them

DappledThings · 07/03/2025 15:42

I wouldn't think twice before eating it. Never known anyone get ill from cake or seen anything other than homemade cake brought into the office/church/someone's house anything other than devoured pretty quickly. Most people don't have these hang-ups.

Well I thought the same. I have a brand new kitchen and you could eat off my floor. And I give a shit about hygiene. It’s going to miles better off than most commercial kitchens

I would be very happy to have homebaked goodies

ArghhWhatNext · 07/03/2025 15:43

If you’d asked me 6 months ago, I’d have said the SIL was being unreasonable. But I was gifted something home baked at Christmas that hadn’t actually been cooked through and it made me realise that actually it depends who’s done the baking and whether I trust their hygiene and cooking knowledge. Sorry.

BusyTraybake · 07/03/2025 15:43

Do people not go to bake sales?

Sleepygrumpyandnothappy · 07/03/2025 15:44

The sister’s SIL must be a mumsnetter. It didn’t even occur to me that people felt like this about home cooking until I read it on here.

Fitzcarraldo353 · 07/03/2025 15:45

Allergens would be the barrier for me rather than hygiene. That's something you may want to consider.

Hortus · 07/03/2025 15:45

Firstly I'm wondering why they need "care packages", sorry I hate that term, but if they're in a posh hotel surely it will already supply a teatray with biscuits etc.
Lots of people don't like eating homemade stuff from people they don't know so it could be a waste. I don't have a problem with it.
At my son's wedding, his new sister in law made fantastic brownies and sweets which were served as part of the evening buffet, but she did it professionally from home and her kitchen had a top hygiene rating etc, so no one was squeamish.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 07/03/2025 15:46

Oh I'd definitely demolish that. But I know people can be quite funny about homemade food. My DH's family don't touch anything I cook or bake even though they can literally see my kitchen (and it's clean!)

Catza · 07/03/2025 15:47

I wouldn't have any issues whatsoever.

ManchesterGirl2 · 07/03/2025 15:49

I'd eat it. IMO home baked is better for you than ultra processed, with cheap ingredients, emulsifiers and flavourings.

BusyTraybake · 07/03/2025 15:51

It’s just a small, personal touch. Not much effort as we only have 12 to do. BIL and sister are writing notes and sharing small treats and a few items people may have forgotten.

MassiveOvaryaction · 07/03/2025 15:51

If they're individually wrapped how would they know they've been home produced vs from a baker? If not wrapped then I wouldn't eat either - no idea how long they've been there and what's got onto them while they're sitting there.

cramptramp · 07/03/2025 15:52

I'd eat them. Wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Yes and people may be welcomed a little snack when they get back to rooms

and probably will overlook any worries if been drinking!

LazyArsedMagician · 07/03/2025 15:52

I expect most Mumsnetters would say they wouldn't eat it - I would.

Inmydreams88 · 07/03/2025 15:53

I’d eat it! And I’d love to receive something like that.
