Would you be grossed out by homemade baked good in care package?

I am helping my sister put together care packages for her wedding. She is paying for the wedding party to stay in a posh hotel for a few nights. We are going to leave little care packages on the bed. I have an exceptional brownie recipe and was going to leave a trio of favours in the box. But sister’s SIL says she would never eat a homemade treat due to hygiene reasons.

obviously I will be clinically clean and wil even wear a hair net as I couldn’t think of anything worse than someone finding a hair.

Who is being weird?

I would eat them without a thought.

No but presumably your sister does?

But I’m the one making them and they probably don’t know I am a bit like Monica from friends

It wouldn't occur to me not to eat it but I am very lax with caring about these things 😂

Ditto. It would never occur to me even to think about where it had been made. But I’ve an iron constitution and have eaten in some very manky establishments on trekking holidays.

Once was enough for me, never ever ever again 🙈

I thought that after the first time but then I wanted to check that it was the same experience the second time...it was worse! Plus they taste disgusting, I can still taste/smell them and it makes me feel quite sick 🤢

Thepeopleversuswork · 07/03/2025 16:41

I get why people may not want to eat food made by a total stranger
Surely any food you buy is made by a stranger?? I'm totally flummoxed by this thread.

I know.

Unless you're milling your own grains, milking your own cow and growing vegetables you will at some point be eating food made by a total stranger.

Madness....

HowToSaveAWife · 07/03/2025 16:41

Considering I have food sensitivities and the home baked element... sorry I'd bin it. And I also probably wouldn't use the jammies as I'm very fussy with fabrics so they would be binned/donated too.

Pineconesandterracotta · 07/03/2025 16:41

I would love it, eat it and appreciate the personal touch.

diddl · 07/03/2025 16:42

Lollypop701 · 07/03/2025 16:40

Can you post me some? Sounds fantastic and I think much more personal than bought goods! I’ve had cake pops made to look like me from a wedding once… still up there as favourite wedding favour

I was thinking this.

If there are any that aren't wanted-is Germany doable?😁

Personally I'd love it!

OptimisticRealist2024 · 07/03/2025 16:42

I had a homemade wedding cake and homemade cakes as favours because we wanted to keep costs down.

It isn't really my thing but if I were you, I'd just do them and if people don't want to eat them then they don't have to. Maybe include something non-edible in there, too, so people don't feel left out if they have an allergy?

Edit: seen something ominous the thread about pyjamas. I wouldn't do these - I'm really fussy about what I wear to bed. Keep it small!

bobby81 · 07/03/2025 16:42

I’m another one who won’t eat homemade things from people I don’t know (and plenty of people I DO know too!!)

I'd have thought at a small wedding people would chat and ask if they were unsure. I think it's a lovely idea and if I were you I'd just do it and not worry - if some people choose not to eat them then more fool them for missing out on such deliciousness!

TorroFerney · 07/03/2025 16:43

WestwardHo1 · 07/03/2025 16:10

I'd eat it!

I wouldn't call it a "care package" though.

Ya that is an odd name for it. I also wouldn’t be doing it there’s just no need making extra work for yourselves . I’d also be thinking of the people who wouldn’t eat it, such a waste of food.

yeah - the problem is you don't know how much you've had until it's too late. It's always a disaster in my experience. Maybe that's because I'm too greedy not to end up totally wasted.

Breadcat24 · 07/03/2025 16:43

@BusyTraybake because they might not be to their taste- they might not like pyjamas and even more so if you are going to make them personalized in any way "Busy's wedding". Would be straight in the charity bag for me after some rictus grin photos
Also are they synthetic satin? Not eco

MolluscMonday · 07/03/2025 16:43

It’s a terrible idea OP. Just send the brownies to me, I’ll sort it out for you…. 😉

ChaToilLeam · 07/03/2025 16:44

I‘d bloody love it! I‘m sure there are many business premises and commercial bakeries that aren’t kept as clean as people‘s own homes. You won’t find me getting fussy about tasty baked goods in any case.

I'd FAR rather have food cooked by friends I know who are clean than stuff cooked in a dubious place where hand hygiene could be lacking. Also hair should be covered- no one likes to find a hair in their food!

Crazykefir · 07/03/2025 16:44

I wouldn't bother. Your sister has been more than generous paying for accommodation. Buy them a drink.

GinToBegin · 07/03/2025 16:45

OP, you have to remember that this is MN. Social drinkers are going to hell in a soused hand basket, doors must never be answered unless pre-arranged in writing, and other people are slatterns and slobs heaving with bacteria and poo crumbs.

In the real world, allergens aside, most real people will fall on home-made brownies like Dracula on a comely maiden’s milky-white bosom, and consider them a lovely touch. Crack on, I’d say.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/03/2025 16:46

ColaGeranium · 07/03/2025 16:36

I wouldn't eat it, no. In general, I have found people's hygiene, particularly around food, to be lacking. I rarely eat out.

How sad. Are you getting help with this health anxiety? It must be very restricting for you and your family.

BusyTraybake · 07/03/2025 16:47

LOLing at the people who think a reusable burlap bag with a few treats and 5 sets of good quality pjs (which shock horror can be worn more than once) is an ecological disaster.

Various members of our family have made wedding cakes for other members of the family. None of us are professional bakers/cooks. What would posters who don’t eat home made cakes do in respect of these wedding cakes?

Springhassprungxx · 07/03/2025 16:48

I'll eat them for you op!
