Would you be grossed out by homemade baked good in care package?

I am helping my sister put together care packages for her wedding. She is paying for the wedding party to stay in a posh hotel for a few nights. We are going to leave little care packages on the bed. I have an exceptional brownie recipe and was going to leave a trio of favours in the box. But sister’s SIL says she would never eat a homemade treat due to hygiene reasons.

obviously I will be clinically clean and wil even wear a hair net as I couldn’t think of anything worse than someone finding a hair.

Who is being weird?

I have food allergies so don't often eat food from places I don't know. But that's very much a me thing and everyone else in my house would be delighted - such a lovely gesture :-)

It blows my mind that someone can pompously assert that ‘we are not desperate enough to eat potluck or home-made goods baked by randoms’ (paraphrased) but can eat their body weight in Pringles!

Extraordinary

I wonder how many of the people on here who “wouldn’t eat anything homemade ” have ever eaten a brownie in a coffee shop?

Because I hate to break it to you, but most of the independent cafes and coffee shops I know (and I work in the industry) either buy in their cakes and treats from local (home based) cake makers, or make them themselves at home in the evening and bring them into the cafe each morning.

So unless you only ever eat at chains like Pret or Starbucks where they have prepackaged brownies etc, there’s a good chance you eat “home made” cakes all the time.

OP i like the idea of making brownies (and thanks for the recipe) but I think the artisan wrapping shown with flowers and wax seals etc is possibly unnecessary and could be offputting. A cellophane bag sealed with a floral sticker, plus a sticker with full ingredients on the back will give a clean vibe and professional finish, so hopefully appealing to as many people as possible. I’d be more likely to eat a well sealed item with full info as it says that you’re aware and
meticulous.

Using sprigs of flowers (especially poisonous ones such as the baby’s breath shown!) may add to the homemade feel, but could also potentially make them less appetising, as I’d be imagining the flowers in the kitchen, the chocolate would leave brown smears on the white cardboard boxes etc. Cellophane is cleaner and crisper, showcases the brownie and makes it easier to reseal and leave some for later, whereas the cute little boxes might allow ants in etc.

And, entertainingly, is on another thread just now recommending sharing bowls of pretzels and nuts at a wedding 😂

@newnamesix I saw that!

Well, actually, I had known the bride for 25 years at the time of her wedding and am 100 percent certain that she and her mother made the cakes, but nice try.

crumblingschools · 10/03/2025 14:30

@BettyBardMacDonald but if they had roped someone else in to help with the cakes, what would you have done?

My wedding cake had elements/tiers/decorations made by different people. Would you have refused to eat that as you might only know 2 of the cake makers?
