Would you be grossed out by homemade baked good in care package?

I am helping my sister put together care packages for her wedding. She is paying for the wedding party to stay in a posh hotel for a few nights. We are going to leave little care packages on the bed. I have an exceptional brownie recipe and was going to leave a trio of favours in the box. But sister’s SIL says she would never eat a homemade treat due to hygiene reasons.

obviously I will be clinically clean and wil even wear a hair net as I couldn’t think of anything worse than someone finding a hair.

Who is being weird?

We eat out far too often so we won’t stop but I think if I was going to a wedding this weekend and knew something was homemade (with no idea who they were and what their kitchen was like) I’d give it to my husband.

Fair enough, I imagine most men wouldn't give two hoots!

I really couldn't care less about stuff like this, I'd eat it happily and I think this sort of fastidiousness is ridiculous.

The idea that you'll happily eat a mass produced cake that's been made in a factory by people you don't know probably working minimum wage, using industrially produced materials, but that you wouldn't eat one that was made with love by someone you know is the definition of insane to me....

But there's a lot of this sort of thing about.

Also this.

MIL thinks I'm awfully virtuous for turning down shop bought cake at her house, but I get the ick being offered mass-produced gack designed to live on a shelf for a week..

Hereforthedramaz · 07/03/2025 16:23

I would 100% eat and be absolutely delighted!

Davi8 · 07/03/2025 16:23

The people I know and have seen must be unhygienic slobs! 😂 I can think of a few examples off the top of my head:

My husband’s step father once carved meat and wiped his nose with his bare hand then continued

The pizza stall lady I saw today licking her fingers

I have an otherwise clean university friend who puts her husband’s crocs in the dishwasher 😩 - I’ve eaten there before I knew this!

Garlicgarlicgarlic · 07/03/2025 16:10

Nope.
I wouldn't eat anything made in someone else's house.

Have you ever seen threads on here where people announce they don't wash their hands after peeing (because 'sterile' 😄) or after changing a kids shitty nappy?
and for all the other reasons posters have already written.

Yes I have read those threads and yes I would still eat the homemade brownies. It’s why my immune system is top notch 👌

TunipTheVegimal24 · 07/03/2025 16:24

My OH is a teacher - he's recieved quite a few homemade jams / chutneys / cakes over the years. The grotty year 3s are always so proud to tell him how they helped 🤢 It always feels like such a shame, but it all goes straight in the bin. I have children. I'm under no illusions re their grimness.

I also once lived in a house share, where on of my flatmates made a lovely cake for a bake sale, with all chocolate buttons on the top. Looked delicious. Next morning, she came down, and went into one because it looked as though someone had picked all the buttons off and eaten them. Nope! On closer investigation, we had rats 🙃

The sister’s SIL must be a mumsnetter. It didn’t even occur to me that people felt like this about home cooking until I read it on here.

Same

RandomWordsThrownTogether · 07/03/2025 16:25

Honestly if you left shop bought brownies I’d only eat them if desperate as those things are processed! I always go for home made, it’s nicer and doesn’t have all the extra ingredients.

KittenPause · 07/03/2025 16:25

Tbh the care package is a strange idea imho especially if she's already paying for the rooms

Why on earth is she paying for everyone's rooms

Then giving a random care package with a suspicious looking home made brownie in it

Which recommends cleaning things like flip flops in the dishwasher.

That's the point of a dishwasher - it cleans, and disinfects. So at the end, everything is clean and germ free.

It's like I had to teach DH that no, we do not need an entirely separate spoon for taking the dog's food out of the tin and puttig it in her bowl because 1) her food is not some germ ridden mess 2) the spoon will be washed and 3) it's okay for the dog food spoon to be washed in the regular dishwasher.

So sister is very type a. The packages are going to look spectacular. The brownies will be packaged beautifully. Sister and I (and our mum) actually enjoy crafting. It’s all going to be very aesthetic. It will include treats like chilli pretzels, brownies, fancy crisps etc, something for hydration. Mum is going to get her favourite chocolate. Bridesmaids are getting matching pyjamas for the getting ready pics. Bride and groom are writing personal notes.

It’s probably a bit ott but we enjoy this thing and it’s a small wedding (only 50 people).

I can’t imagine anyone in the wedding party would be anything but appreciative. Th me brownie thing I’m still not sure about.

Sister and I probably need to deactivate our Pinterest after this wedding

MN is f-ing weird about home baked goods whereas most people I know IRL are delighted by home baked goods

I expect most Mumsnetters would say they wouldn't eat it - I would.

Correction - most Mumsnetters who would bother to respond to this would say they wouldn't eat it. I can't believe they are representative of the general population. The majority of us eat other people's cake, flapjacks etc without a second thought. I am a greedy person with a good immune system, no digestive problems, no allergies and I would be delighted to get free delicious brownies from a family connection.

Icanttakethisanymore · 07/03/2025 16:28

I can not believe so many people wouldn't eat them... do you not eat food at other people's houses? How is this any different?

JustMeHello · 07/03/2025 16:29

I would absolutely eat any cake. But I know a lot of people who won't if they don't know where it came from, I think it's quite a common thing now. And however clean you are, if the people don't know you they have no reason to trust you. By all means put them in, but know that many people won't eat it. Maybe add a note to say "not offended if you don't want it, please donate to Sandra/whoever if you don't!'

piscofrisco · 07/03/2025 16:29

When did people become so precious? Once upon a time not so long ago everything was home made wasn't it? the alternative didn't exist.
If you have a nut allergy or whatever then I get it.
I'd eat it and be very pleased to! When we go on holiday there is often a care package left by the owner of the cottage that has home made stuff in it. I love it and I haven't yet died from eating any of it.
As if a bride is going to say yes to having someone dodgy make her wedding favours. Good grief.

PrimitivePerson · 07/03/2025 16:29

Yeah, I'm a lot more anxious and hypervigilant than the average person, but I'll eat whatever's in front of me without hesitation, unless it's something I actually dislike. Don't get this weird hygiene obsession at all.

BusyTraybake · 07/03/2025 16:30

WestwardHo1 · 07/03/2025 16:10

I'd eat it!

I wouldn't call it a "care package" though.

A gift box is probably more accurate

"Suspicious looking home made brownie in it" 😂

How will it look suspicious?? This can't be real.

Cherrysherbet · 07/03/2025 16:31

I’d definitely eat it 😁. I love homemade goodies. I’d also think it was a lovely touch.

prelovedusername · 07/03/2025 16:32

I don’t like the term “care package” but the gesture is lovely. I can’t understand what’s wrong with people, home baked is so much nicer.

Even if your hygiene wasn’t stellar (I’m sure it is!) the heat from baking the brownies would kill off anything that shouldn’t be there. I might be a bit more careful about raw items, dairy or meat but home made brownies, I would have no problem with those.

Skyellaskerry · 07/03/2025 16:32

MojoMoon · 07/03/2025 15:42

Make them, tie a label on saying "Homemade by BusyTrayBake, contains nuts and gluten" and then either people eat them or they don't eat them, their choice.

I would happily eat them

I think this is a perfect idea (and I most certainly would try them!)

Icanttakethisanymore · 07/03/2025 16:33

You lot are all mental. It's a lovely idea OP. Bake the brownies.

Hortus · 07/03/2025 16:33

The people who refuse to eat anything homemade by someone else ever, do you refuse to eat when you go to family/ friends' houses, do you refuse to eat their meals, and do you never go to dinner at anyone's house?

I get why people may not want to eat food made by a total stranger, but what about family and friends, when you know the state of hygiene of their home and if they wash hands etc?

Anora · 07/03/2025 16:33

I wouldn’t have a problem with homemade food but I do think the whole idea is unnecessary and wasteful. A decent hotel will have shampoo, toothbrushes etc. for anyone who forgets them. If the bride and groom want to write a note for guests that’s fine but personally I think she/ you would be better saving her/ your effort and money.
