beavers being rereleased in the uk - why? They are territorial animals and don’t really have a place in our carefully balanced ecosystem.

hold the thread!!!! I need popcorn and a comfy seat...also maybe a supersize full fat coke no ice

CarrieOnComplaining · 07/03/2025 17:54

I think the OP has a point.

In re-introduction terms beavers are gateway mammal.

It WILL be bears and wolves next.

Especially bears.

AND...those bison on Kent pulled a sneaky stealth stunt. The produced a BABY BISON that no one knew was happening. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/oct/21/first-wild-bison-born-in-uk-for-millennia-after-surprise-pregnancy

They have been reintroducing Beavers into the wild for years, why are you starting this argument now?

there are also places that are reintroducing lynx’s into the wild do you have an issue with this as well?

FuzzyPuffling · 07/03/2025 14:53

Have you asked them what their intentions are?
Good beaver? Naughty beaver?

Edited

Perhaps they should have to take a training course before they’re released ? So they can beaver-y careful where they build their dams !! (Sorry).

Those of you who don’t work in healthcare, this is the closest thing to experiencing what people in the uk are like.

Nature sets the bar pretty low for existing. It’s happy if you’ve got a pulse. Everything else is a bonus.

As the saying goes "They walk among us"! 🙄😂

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 07/03/2025 18:01

Please don't anyone tell OP that they are trying to re engineer mammoths and aurochs... I can't see her taking that well.

CarrieOnComplaining · 07/03/2025 18:02

We've got a colony of Beavers near us. Really wild and out of control. Properly violent.

They have caused havoc in the Church Hall - I just hope Akela can get them under control when they go up to cubs.

This is my favourite response! 🤣

Floatlikeafeather2 · 07/03/2025 18:05

But there are already some beavers in the wild in the UK. The reason you might not be aware of this is that they don't go around eating children or causing flooding so don't make the news much. They weren't hunted to extinction because they damaged the environment but because people ate them and used their pelts as well. That, alongside manmade interference in their habitats, jeopardised their survival. Just as an aside, castoreum (anal gland secretion) was, and still is, used in perfume and also in foodstuffs. It's used by companies like Yoplait, Ben and Jerry's and Haribo in the States to replicate raspberry aand vanilla flavours.

TempestTost · 07/03/2025 18:05

I live in Canada, there are lots of beavers around where I live, they really aren't an issue with kids.

That being said, I think most of the UK is too densely populated for them. Even here when they are in more populated rural areas they often cause problems and need to be moved or in some cases they are killed. Their building just encroaches too much on human infrastructure.

I think the idea was not exactly mammoths but hairy elephants which could survive in cooler climes. Probably not a good idea roaming around the U.K. tbh and they won't be available on a short enough timescale for Trump to use them to invade Greenland or Canada.

Beaver gangs will be rife 😮

😂😂😂

Will they get into trouble for not wearing suits if we try to have talks with them do you think

That's true, it will be more in the nature of hairy elephants. They've managed to engineer very hairy mice so far. Only about another thousand incremental steps to go...

steff13 · 07/03/2025 15:54

Anecdotal, but there are lots of beavers in my state, we've seen them countless times, and we've never experienced any kind of violence.

I think you'll find that they are Quaker Beavers and have taken a solemn non violence vow. You can't use them to shield the other blood thirsty beavers!

We see you 👀

No, I think after the Trump/Zelenskyy debacle it’s much more likely that people will beaver-y careful what they say !!

bringmelaughter · 07/03/2025 18:16

LemaLemons · 07/03/2025 15:11

And what about the beaver on child violence risks?

I’ve not had a great day and this thread has so cheered me up. It and you are hilarious @LemaLemons. Think of the children people of mumsnet 😂

TickingAlongNicely · 07/03/2025 14:57

As a Scout leader, headlines like Beavers released into wild absolutely terrify me.

I'm sure the little furry creatures are a lot less terrifying than the human versions in their turquoise jumpers.

My boys are grown up now, so I'm not up-to-date with scouting matters.... I actually thought this was about Beaver Scouts and that they were no longer a thing, but were being started up again Blush

Aww when I quoted it didn't include the picture, kinda ruins it😥

LyndaSnellsSniff · 07/03/2025 18:26

David Archer, is that you?

( Nice Archers reference there for those familiar with the daily tales of country folk. Beavers have featured a fair bit of late. And I've read the word "beaver" so many times it's starting to look all funny.)

OuchyEars · 07/03/2025 18:31

I heard beavers are good for hats, with that readymade neck shade tail.

Ducks!

MurdoMunro · 07/03/2025 18:32

I was involved in the reintroduction of sea eagles in Scotland in the time back when. It’s only just occurred to me that we didn’t get them to sign a form to agree not to help themselves to weans. I wonder how many they got? Somebody should probably check on that.

Motorroller · 07/03/2025 18:32

LemaLemons · 07/03/2025 14:50

Beavers are not proven to create wetland where you want it. Beavers might decide to make the site of your home into their wetland and you could wake up day after day and beavers have rerouted water over your property and garden. And when you try and stop it coming from one way then you might get that dam and bust it but the next morning another set of beavers might create a wetland from another direction.

but the next morning another set of beavers might create a wetland from another direction.

You might get a nice beaver though.

This is definitely the terribly tedious buffalo poster.

I thought it was Bison, or was that someone else? 😃

Was it a formal reintroduction or were they just winging it ? (Apologies again !)
