beavers being rereleased in the uk - why? They are territorial animals and don’t really have a place in our carefully balanced ecosystem.

I thought the reason beavers were eaten in pre-reformation times was because the Catholic Church decreed them to be fish and therefore allowed to be eaten on Fridays/Lent. Particularly their hairless fish-shaped tails. So, as we've just had pancake day, there’s todays dinner suggestion.

which is probably at least as bonkers as anything a troll can come up with but I didn’t make this up!

Edited

I suspect that as this was before the discovery of chilli, potatoes and the state of Kentucky, anything that wasn't a carp or tench that had spent its life swimming around eating the literal shit that was lobbed into rivers before wide scale water sanitation/sewage treatment was going to seem pretty tasty.

Had they survived the hungry monks and priests, maybe we'd all be eating KFB now.

This is the part of the problem specifically the fact that the beavers were allegedly run out of this country and hunted to extinction. There is a reason our ancestors decided to remove them from the eco system and it is probably a good idea not to cause the same problem once again.

Weren't they hunted to extinction because they were used to make hats? Don't know whee I heard that but they did used to make beaver skin hats.

Womanofcustard · 07/03/2025 17:35

Never heard of beavers being violent. BUT they are already having to cull them in Scotland because they won’t stick to the ‘rules’!
and the reason all those rich landowners want to introduce wolves to Scotland is so they can hunt them in the future. More exciting than killing deer (or beavers).
the people doing this are nuts. Much better ways to improve the environment.

@BigBoysDontCry "I think the OP is hysterical." I think s/he is too - in both senses of the word! 😂

TheignT · 07/03/2025 17:37

I used to be a leader at Beavers at the local church hall. To be honest they just looked like children. Thinking about it they could be pretty vicious.

LemaLemons · 07/03/2025 14:48

The eco system is carefully balanced now I mean and adding in beavers could effect the balance as we know it at the moment

It isn't carefully balanced in the UK, we're one of the most nature depleted countries on the planet and declining.

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 07/03/2025 17:40

To be fair to Mr Tumnus he only grassed on Lucy to the Witch. Edmund went full bore traitor which resulted in Aslans actual death.
Luckily Aslan got better and Edmund and Mr Tumnus were redeemed.
Also I would much prefer beavers in my garden to children. I'm pro wolf, lynx and bear, pole cat and all the rest of our predators. The main threat to beavers will probably turn out to be obesity as the local humans overfeed them. I know I would.

Beavers don't even make the top 100 things I'm worried about.

The list is headed by

  1. Men
  2. Other adults
  3. Cars.
  4. Dog
  5. Social media
  6. Other children

I think beavers are below alien abduction and solar flares

Are other adults normally known as women?

Whineandcheese · 07/03/2025 17:41

I just hope the two pairs released consist of a male and a female beaver, not a male and a self-identified female beaver ...

They did this with puffins.
Swines!

What happens if this is pincer movement and they bring in their mates the Otters to dominate our coastlines/estuaries and steal the fish?

Porcuporpoise · 07/03/2025 15:57

Beavers have been living wild in Kent since the 1960s. Imo this explains a lot.

OMG! Did they vote Leave? Do they not want European beavers coming over here and stealing their dams?!!!!

Fernie6491 · 07/03/2025 17:44

Thank you all, for a most entertaining thread! Apart from the serious side of beaver introduction, (of which I heartily approve) there has been amazing humour and puns. Bring on the beavers!

ImAChangeling · 07/03/2025 17:44

The world needs more beavers 🦫 🦫 🦫

FreddoSwaggins · 07/03/2025 17:45

Well, this is terrifying. I dont think anyone should be joking about the violence of beavers.

There's nothing more horrifying than a hostile takeover by beavers. There won't be an area near a river that's safe. It doesn't take long untill the castorinus
protection rackets start. The drug rings and child abductions. You mark my words.

We need a helpline and a channel 4 documentary.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/mar/05/beavers-released-england-rivers-what-you-need-to-know

there is a lot of propaganda about why beavers are being released and the alleged positive impact on nature. However one thing that’s really clear is this love of building dams could result in water being rerouted across flood plains and destroy homes.

only two beavers I know but two beavers turn into 10 beavers and 10 beavers turn into 50 beavers etc in no time at all as they are large rodents they have large litters and very quickly spread in area. If you live on a floodplain then there’s real reason for concern

If you live in a flood plain the beavers are the least of your worries.

we have beavers here. They were released ages ago. It’s fine.

Verv · 07/03/2025 17:46

This is scandalous.
Two Scottish beavers were released yesterday in Dorset, and now ten of them have just opened a chippy down the road and are deep frying mars bars.

Not only are they going to randomly assault children, but its been less than 24 hours and theyre already contributing to the obesity epidemic.

AngelicKaty · 07/03/2025 17:46

Zebedee999 · 07/03/2025 16:46

Surely humans could engineer such dams in a more consistent and reliable way than beavers?

Meh, beavers are competent dam builders and they do the work for free. 😉

TheWombatleague · 07/03/2025 17:49

Europe has bears, wolves and lynx and the UK can't live alongside the ferocious beaver?

Britinme · 07/03/2025 17:50

I highly recommend a book I read recently called Beaverland, How One Weird Rodent Made America, by Leila Philip, which is about the rereleasing of beavers into the wild in North America. They have greatly improved wetland areas where they were released. They were hunted almost to extinction in the US (and in the UK) largely for the financial benefits of hunting them. I haven't RTFT so sorry if this says stuff that has already been said.

Shodan · 07/03/2025 17:51

NOBODY PANIC!!

Defence Beavers- these are the Good Guys, deffo on our side.

YourHappyJadeEagle · 07/03/2025 17:03

How do you know? It’s highly likely you could sit a group of beavers down and get more sense from them than you can from many of the world’s leaders. More power to the beavers I say.

I think if OP sat down with a group of beavers, s/he'd get more sense out of them than they'd get out of OP! 😂
