California not Sussex

CaliforniaNotSussex · 06/03/2025 13:28

I was born and grew up on the Surrey Sussex border. My brother currently lives in Sussex, my mum spent her retirement in Sussex, my grandparents lived in Sussex their whole lives, I had Saturday and holiday jobs in Sussex, my friends at school lived in Sussex.

I do not like or agree with Ms Markle having the 'Duchess of Sussex' title. She has spent all of 6 hours of her entire life here. She doesn't represent or care about me and the rest of the population of Sussex. She doesn't even like the UK. She will probably never set foot in the UK again, she hates our royal family and our country.

I cant really do much about the title being given to her. But now she wants people to refer to her as 'Meghan Sussex' according to her new netflix show.

Why?????

Why Meghan do you want you and your family to have a surname of a place you have barely ever been to, know nothing about, and which is located in a country you dislike and will never return to?

Can't you call yourself Meghan California instead? You can call yourself anything informally, and if you want to change your name formally, there is probably a way that you and Harry and the kids could adopt 'California' as your new surname.

Why oh why take/steal our home county as your new name. I get the 'duchess of Sussex' title is given to you, but you don't need to use it, and you definitely don't need to call yourself 'Meghan Sussex'.

(Some of) The people of Sussex do not want you to have our name

If you want our name then come visit. Spend time here. Visit the locals, buy OUR jam, invest in OUR schools, donate money to local charities, show interest in the place you have adopted as yours. Visit us regularly. Learn about the culture, the people, the place.

AIBU for thinking Meghan should make the effort to get to know Sussex if she now wants to be called 'Meghan Sussex'? If she doesn't want anything to do with us and will never come here again, she shouldn't call herself 'Meghan Sussex'.

Their son could have had the title of the Earl of Dumbarton but that was seen as inappropriate as it contained the word "Dumb".

It's not fair to direct all your anger at Meghan though, Harry is just as bad. Where are his links to Sussex? He should be plain Harry Windsor. Or Harry Mountbatten-Windsor.

Doughnut89 · 06/03/2025 15:27

Tomatotater · 06/03/2025 15:14

So how come the Wales children are 'Wales' and used to be 'Cambridge'? It is exactly how the title works.

They were never “Cambridge” and Kate and William have never introduced themselves as Catherine Cambridge or Catherine Wales etc. before she became princess of wales I think most people still referred to her as Kate Middleton. Some still do and she’s never seen a need to correct them. Also Kate and William are working members of the royal family but those titles are still not Kate and Williams surnames nor their childrens surnames. I don’t care if she wants to call herself Mountbatten-Windsor or just Meghan Windsor. But it’s clear she’s only really using Sussex because of the brand

I agree with this, Meghan does get all the bashing but they’re both guilty of riding on the Royal Sussex title

whathaveiforgotten · 06/03/2025 15:31

I find it hard to understand why people love and respect the concept of the royal family when it's purely by accident of birth order that Prince Andrew isn't now the King...

derxa · 06/03/2025 15:33

Tooty78 · 06/03/2025 15:06

Megan Montecito would suit her better😄

Btw didn't she kick off when Archie was given the title
Earl of Dumbarton, because it had the word 'dumb' in it!

It’s Dum-Barton not Dumb-arton. As a Scot this annoys me beyond reason. 🤣

Oh this is funny.

I thought her/their surname was Mountbatten-Windsor?

It is.
That's what is even more stupid about her wanting to be called Sussex. If she wants to have the same actual name as her husband and children then she should be called Mountbatten-Windsor.
If she ( or Harry) has any idea about how titles work, she would realise that the holder of the title doesn't take the title name as their surname ie it's Joe Bloggs, 3rd Earl of Anyshire, not Joe Anyshire.

JoyousGreyOrca · 06/03/2025 15:39

Their surname is not Windsor Mountbatten. Read the thread, this has already been explained. Harrys surname is Sussex. Williams is Cambridge and his children use the surname Cambridge.

They aren't.
If you look on the General Register Office's indexes all the children of William and Catherine were registered under the surname of Mountbatten-Windsor, as was Archie. That is their surname. No doubt as they get older they'll acquire various dukedoms but those titles won't change their surname.

How are you able to see their birth certificate? I did not think that was publicly available?

I would prefer her to be the Duchess of York to be honest, after the title of Duke of York had been removed from Andrew and given to Harry.

I don't expect anyone with a title like this to know and visit the area to be honest.

Oh so do people of colour have to be "nice" to get support do they?

That would surely be reasonable. Do you also make "Oh so
Pink people have to be "nice" to get support
Blue eyed people have to be "nice" to get support
Thin people have to be "nice" to get support
Heavy people have to be "nice" to get support
Tall people have to be "nice" to get support

As part of 'Sussex culture', we burn effigies. This one of Trump depicted as Hannibal Lecter, with a mask and straight jacket, riding a giant missile went up a treat at Lewes Bonfire.

🤣🤣👍

I genuinely don't understand your point.

Wrong.

Wrong! Just googled and I can see Prince Georges birth certificate. It calls him His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge.
His birth certificate literally states Cambridge as we are all saying.

I imagine if she did do exactly what you suggest that would also irritate you. Or would you be interested in being part of the welcoming committee? Give her the guided tour and share your jam recipe?

If it was a genuine interest, I'd be happy to provide the tour!! Anyone genuine, wanting to learn, I'm happy to help.

(If she comes armed with a camera crew, stays 10 minutes and wants me to sing her praises or wants me to hug her, that won't happen)

Comparisonisthethiefofjoy11 · 06/03/2025 15:55

Op I completely agree with you. Markle is a nasty bully (as written and confirmed in the media), she has had numerous confirmed reports of her being difficult and hard to work/deal with, she's a compulsive liar and cannot even seem to sell jam without rebranding before she's sold one jar of it! She has no business sense whatsoever (multiple failed deals) and she is boring as hell to watch on anything i have seen her in (my personal opinion 🤭)

She went her whole life identifying as Caucasian, it was even on her acting resume that she was Caucasian. She only became black when it suited her and fit her race card narrative. She's clinging on to those titles with a cast iron grip. I bet she couldn't identify Sussex on a map to save her life.

Mumsnet is an odd platform where it's still on Meghan Markles side for some reason. The wider world sees through her.

I'm quite happy thanks :) tired and a little delirious due to lack of sleep! But not sad or pathetic :)

What's 'oracism'? Is it some kind of prejudice against vocal utterings or oral matters?

In all seriousness though, you should channel this energy into something useful!
