California not Sussex

I was born and grew up on the Surrey Sussex border. My brother currently lives in Sussex, my mum spent her retirement in Sussex, my grandparents lived in Sussex their whole lives, I had Saturday and holiday jobs in Sussex, my friends at school lived in Sussex.

I do not like or agree with Ms Markle having the 'Duchess of Sussex' title. She has spent all of 6 hours of her entire life here. She doesn't represent or care about me and the rest of the population of Sussex. She doesn't even like the UK. She will probably never set foot in the UK again, she hates our royal family and our country.

I cant really do much about the title being given to her. But now she wants people to refer to her as 'Meghan Sussex' according to her new netflix show.

Why?????

Why Meghan do you want you and your family to have a surname of a place you have barely ever been to, know nothing about, and which is located in a country you dislike and will never return to?

Can't you call yourself Meghan California instead? You can call yourself anything informally, and if you want to change your name formally, there is probably a way that you and Harry and the kids could adopt 'California' as your new surname.

Why oh why take/steal our home county as your new name. I get the 'duchess of Sussex' title is given to you, but you don't need to use it, and you definitely don't need to call yourself 'Meghan Sussex'.

AIBU for thinking Meghan should make the effort to get to know Sussex if she now wants to be called 'Meghan Sussex'? If she doesn't want anything to do with us and will never come here again, she shouldn't call herself 'Meghan Sussex'.

Abso bloody lutely! He is the person who is a Royal. He is the one who slagged off his family. He is the one who told Meghan about the racist comments, he is the one who wrote a book and he is the one who apparently told The Queen that they were going to inflict her godawful nickname on their child. But he is never given as much hate. So many are desperate for them to get divorced and for Harry to come back to his 'real' family, or for him to be deported from the US, despite the fact that there are two children involved, so are wishing that two very young children they don't know or have even seen properly have to spend the rest of their lives being ferried across the Atlantic and never see their parents in the same country again. I doubt the children would be welcome into the RF anyway. They are half Meghans.. As usual, Royal men are never the ones causing the problems. Its always the fault of evil women. Maybe, as they cant seem to manage to bring up men who have any agency and are so easily led, maybe they need to take a look at themselves. They are clearly doing something wrong.

I'm Scottish, and when Charles cosplays as a Scot, that winds me up. It's like a cat peeing in the next door's garden, because they have their own cat, and its claiming that spot too.

The thing I find funny is that their legal surname is actually Windsor 😂😂😂 why not introduce herself as Meghan Windsor. Her name is not Meghan Sussex 😂 that is not how the title works 😂😂😂

Traditionally, the monarch gives titles of the lands they "own" (which is all of the UK) to their children as they reach certain landmarks like getting married. Prince Harry got Sussex just like Prince Andrew once got York and Prince Edward got Wessex and later Edinburgh. Wives "get" to use their royal husbands' titles because that's the UK's patriarchal tradition.

Regardless, though - anyone can use any surname. If they'd name changed to Sussex - or Paisley or Cockfosters or Merthyr Tydfil or Ballycastle - by Deed Poll would you still be throwing a rager?

Toponymic surnames are traditional in many, many languages and societies. Jack London never set foot in the UK. Kathy Ireland is not Irish. Irving Berlin wasn't German. Sydney Potier wasn't Australian. Skye Pennington isn't from the Highlands.

I do so agree. Have you written to the Prince of Wales, Dukes of Edinburgh, York, Gloucester, Westminster, Northumberland and all the other Dukes of assorted shires asking what they think? I expect they'd be delighted by such an original idea.

So how come the Wales children are 'Wales' and used to be 'Cambridge'? It is exactly how the title works.

I think if had received the kind of cruel "welcome" she got, I would hate the UK. Not sure how she feels, but her feelings are understood.
I say this as someone who's not into any royal soap opera stuff, and not a fan of celebrity culture. But as someone who say the racial abuse in the British press (which is still constantly going on btw). I say good on Harry for putting his young family above the sham of the "royal family" business.

YANBU, I’m not a Megan hater by any means, I think she gets a lot of unnecessary hate. But they did choose to leave the uk, and whilst she is the Duchess of Sussex, expecting people to call you it is a bit pompous and unnecessary.

If you're still 'often' hearing stuff she is saying, and it's genuinely bothering you enough to start threads online about it, then I'd recommend getting quicker at turning stuff off / turning the page when you're not getting anything positive from it...

Just don't watch shows she's on and don't read interviews either her. If you see it's her being interviewed, then stop reading the interview. If you see her pop up on social media, scroll. It's really not hard to ignore someone you apparently dislike so much.

Why are you proud of your Royal Family and their “traditions”. They are from a long line of incestuous murderers and land grabbers who looted from other countries and now just live off fame, stolen trinkets and waving from the carriages. Honestly - it’s all a little brain washed. What exactly do they do to be proud off? Is it the wave? Charles can’t even run his own bath or put toothpaste on a toothbrush - they would be the first to die in a situation where you have to fend for yourself.

How do you think when Irish people hear titles like Lord Lucan - giving an English murderer a title based on an Irish place he definitely doesn’t care about. I don’t hate royals (I don’t know them personally so they may be perfectly nice people) but they are just fake celebrities, famous because of being born into a certain family with no obvious talent or intellect. I have no issue with Meghan either - she seems a bit self involved but I don’t know her so can’t judge her! Why do you care?

I think like most of the population I am firmly in the I do not give a fuck about what surname she uses. I mean if she called herself "Meghan FTheRoyalFamily" I would think its a bit much. But I seriously do not understand anyone who cares about this.

They're using the name sussex just as William used Cambridge, Andrew got York, Edward got Edinburgh(i think), Charles was Wales until he became king now William has got Wales and God knows who's got Cambridge.
The duchy of Devonshire have been in Derbyshire for 500 years.
The Duke of Norfolk is in Sussex.

Why are these titles and naming traditions only an issue now?
