California not Sussex

CaliforniaNotSussex · 06/03/2025 13:28

I was born and grew up on the Surrey Sussex border. My brother currently lives in Sussex, my mum spent her retirement in Sussex, my grandparents lived in Sussex their whole lives, I had Saturday and holiday jobs in Sussex, my friends at school lived in Sussex.

I do not like or agree with Ms Markle having the 'Duchess of Sussex' title. She has spent all of 6 hours of her entire life here. She doesn't represent or care about me and the rest of the population of Sussex. She doesn't even like the UK. She will probably never set foot in the UK again, she hates our royal family and our country.

I cant really do much about the title being given to her. But now she wants people to refer to her as 'Meghan Sussex' according to her new netflix show.

Why?????

Why Meghan do you want you and your family to have a surname of a place you have barely ever been to, know nothing about, and which is located in a country you dislike and will never return to?

Can't you call yourself Meghan California instead? You can call yourself anything informally, and if you want to change your name formally, there is probably a way that you and Harry and the kids could adopt 'California' as your new surname.

Why oh why take/steal our home county as your new name. I get the 'duchess of Sussex' title is given to you, but you don't need to use it, and you definitely don't need to call yourself 'Meghan Sussex'.

(Some of) The people of Sussex do not want you to have our name

If you want our name then come visit. Spend time here. Visit the locals, buy OUR jam, invest in OUR schools, donate money to local charities, show interest in the place you have adopted as yours. Visit us regularly. Learn about the culture, the people, the place.

AIBU for thinking Meghan should make the effort to get to know Sussex if she now wants to be called 'Meghan Sussex'? If she doesn't want anything to do with us and will never come here again, she shouldn't call herself 'Meghan Sussex'.

She made a big deal out of something that really want a big deal and almost belittled/scalded the woman

Did she bollocks 😂
She literally just mused out loud about how she never usually gets called her family name, even though they all have the same name.
Which is fair enough, if people still called me by my maiden name when we all have the same name even though it's been years since I had that name, it would feel a bit WTF.
She wasn't scolding or belittling those who don't take their husband's names, strange take.
Everyone's choice is their own, it shouldn't trigger someone hearing another's experience.

BettyBardMacDonald · 09/03/2025 09:26

@Tomatotater

Because of the rank hypocrisy; that's why people are rolling their eyes.

She wasn't musing aloud; it was clearly a staged moment designed to promote her branding as having royal connections.

Because without that she's a has-been.

Yeah fair enough, but it seems she can’t help herself, she can’t seem to keep quiet. It’s this sort of thing that makes people think FFS 🙄 She made a big deal out of something that really want a big deal and almost belittled/scalded the woman.

Alienating was probably not quite the word I was meaning but there is and was a stigma for some about single parents, unmarried mothers and being divorced etc and not having the same surname as your child could be indicative of that.

Edited

Most people can't keep quiet when they're the focus of a TV show. It makes for quiet dull television when the host/ presenter doesn't say anything, especially when the programme is literally about them.
She has, however, kept quiet for a couple of years before this when she did her last TV/ podcast.
Again, 'the woman' does have a name of her own. It's Mindy Kaling.

What is Sussex culture? I'm from there and can't think of many distinguishing features from the rest of the south England counties.

Big fans of burning stuff and walking around the dark in stripy jumpers that don’t fit very well. Usually swigging Harvey’s from a tankard.

The woman’s name is irrelevant to this, but if you insist, I will use it. Top and bottom was there was no need to correct her, it was hardly a serious misdemeanour. I bet Mindy Kaling wanted the ground to swallow her up when she was ‘corrected’ in front of millions.

Even the podcasts she was doing when she had guests on, the criticisms were that the focus seemed to be on her as oppose to the celebrity.

You seem extraordinarily worked up about a woman you don't like politely correcting a woman you haven't heard of on a programme you didn't watch.

Not worked up at all, she’s irrelevant to me. Just replying to those that specifically @ or “” me, which is what a discussion is about…

It didn’t need to be put in. It added to the list of why people eye roll and done her no favours at all. Almost like they don’t understand how the public will perceive it.

I don't agree she was a has been. she left a prime time show and gave up a successful lifestyle blog to join the royals. If anything doing that was terrible for her because people liked her before she joined the royals. She usually got good pr and press. She earned good money but wasn't hounded by press and hated by the public. A has been is a celebrity who hasn't worked for a while kind of like Peter Andre before he got with Katie price. But Megan was very much working on a popular show and he blog was worth a few million. Honestly I don't care about this woman. But the hate she gets is rarely based in actual acts and often irrational critique. It's very very strange.

You're not the public..you're just you. I didn't perceive it like you did (because I don't have an irrational hatred of the poor cow).

So she's using whatever advantages she has, against massive, coordinated, wall of pure hatred. Good fucking luck to her, I say. She needs it.

Burning effigies seems to be popular there

That's right. And we play Toads and Stool Ball and eat Pond Pudding.

I really don't give a shit about Meghan Markle or her name and my advice to OP is to just ignore her.

Ah so people aren’t allowed a different opinion to you? We’re only allowed to say positive things and find her lovely? Well guess what, more people appear to dislike her than favour her, based on things she’s done and said and way she’s conducted herself over the years. She’s one privileged woman who’s made her bed so save your energy for those with real problems.

You can say whatever you like. You can't, however, pretend you speak for everyone.
You have no idea what she's said or done, you only know what the tabloids tell you she's said and done, and you swallow it all whole.
You should probably consider getting a life and caring less about what some random women in America is doing with hers.

Well the series has been renewed for another year, apparently, so it looks as if she actually understood pretty well how people would perceive it.

Says someone who can’t stop replying and telling me why my opinions are wrong. You’re the one that keeps spouting out that I can’t speak for everyone. That’s true but however it’s clear as day there has been a public U turn on their opinions.

Why are you so bothered and invested? If you think she’s great then happy days, good for you but not everyone has to agree and judging by comments that’s bang on

The show hasn't been renewed; all eps were filmed at the same time. They've merely broken the eps into two series.
