California not Sussex

CaliforniaNotSussex · 06/03/2025 13:28

I was born and grew up on the Surrey Sussex border. My brother currently lives in Sussex, my mum spent her retirement in Sussex, my grandparents lived in Sussex their whole lives, I had Saturday and holiday jobs in Sussex, my friends at school lived in Sussex.

I do not like or agree with Ms Markle having the 'Duchess of Sussex' title. She has spent all of 6 hours of her entire life here. She doesn't represent or care about me and the rest of the population of Sussex. She doesn't even like the UK. She will probably never set foot in the UK again, she hates our royal family and our country.

I cant really do much about the title being given to her. But now she wants people to refer to her as 'Meghan Sussex' according to her new netflix show.

Why?????

Why Meghan do you want you and your family to have a surname of a place you have barely ever been to, know nothing about, and which is located in a country you dislike and will never return to?

Can't you call yourself Meghan California instead? You can call yourself anything informally, and if you want to change your name formally, there is probably a way that you and Harry and the kids could adopt 'California' as your new surname.

Why oh why take/steal our home county as your new name. I get the 'duchess of Sussex' title is given to you, but you don't need to use it, and you definitely don't need to call yourself 'Meghan Sussex'.

(Some of) The people of Sussex do not want you to have our name

If you want our name then come visit. Spend time here. Visit the locals, buy OUR jam, invest in OUR schools, donate money to local charities, show interest in the place you have adopted as yours. Visit us regularly. Learn about the culture, the people, the place.

AIBU for thinking Meghan should make the effort to get to know Sussex if she now wants to be called 'Meghan Sussex'? If she doesn't want anything to do with us and will never come here again, she shouldn't call herself 'Meghan Sussex'.

She's a woman but yes exactly!

Sorry I correct myself you only want the women in Poland.

TiggyTomCat · 06/03/2025 14:58

She's definitely The Duchess of Suss.....ex........very suss and very ex UK and RF.

SerafinasGoose · 06/03/2025 14:58

This incessant public bullying and excoriation of one woman - who has done nothing particularly significant for good nor ill - has gone too far and for far too long. It's been years. Are people not bored yet?

You won't be satisfied until she is buried.

Incidentally, I'm British. I cannot stand the 'royal' family or anything they stand for, and should a referendum appear in the post tomorrow with an option to kick them into oblivion for all eternity my vote would be a resounding 'YES'. Are you suggesting I should move to California? 😆😎

There's a Royal Board somewhere for keeping this tedious mind-rot among those who are interested. Better still, leave the woman alone.

Do you think she should feel privileged because of who she is?

I think she should feel.privileged because of everything she has been given throughout her life, from her father's love, to her private schooling, to her father getting her into show biz and opening doors, to the opportunities her marriage to a royal has afforded to her...

Instead we often get 'but I grew up having to eat from k mart, and I'm ohhh sooooo the victim ..'

At least he hasn't taken the piss out of the queen on national media, declared he doesn't like the UK and buggered off to diss the country to the world, and I bet he's been to Essex for more than 6 hours!

None of the Royal Family seem to care enough about this to remove the title though, or to stop their kids from being Prince/ Princess. If it was that offensive, and they were that insulted, why haven't they removed their titles? We need a slimmed down Monarchy, Charles said he wanted a slimmed down Monarchy, now Harry has buggered off, an easy way of doing it would be to strip the Sussexes of their titles and stopped the children of second sons (children of daughters cant use titles anyway) from being HRH or Prince/Princess. Why haven't they done it?

Burning effigies seems to be popular there

This really made me laugh

This is utter nonsense. Surnames and titles (which is what Sussex is for Meghan) generally derive from extremely ancient connections and aren’t about representing the modern place of the same name. Some of them references places that don’t even exist anymore, like Wessex. If you hate Meghan that much, just move to Surrey, ffs.

Thank the gods for that.

My birthplace was York. How do you think I feel! 😂

well said. Reminds me a bit of frothing at the mouth MAGA behaviour in some ways.

There probably are some racist idiots out there. But equally, there are people who don't like her because she's just not very nice. Nothing to do with the colour of her skin. And I'd guess most people that don't like her are not racist, they just see her as an unpleasant person and don't care what her skin colour is.

Oh FFS. You don't know the woman. You've never met her. You don't know if she's nice or not.

You've decided to hate her because of what the media has fed you. The racist, misogynistic media. You've lapped it up because you're a racist, misogynistic, fool. You don't know anything.

Fuck me, I hope you don't talk to your imaginary MH clients like this. 'Stop your whining about the awful public, and private, racism you experienced and be grateful that your dad did some incredibly normal parenting 20-30 years ago'.

It’s her husband’s name. As a married woman she wants to take his surname, not your address

Not her mother, interesting; you don't come across very well.

Tooty78 · 06/03/2025 15:06

Megan Montecito would suit her better😄

Btw didn't she kick off when Archie was given the title
Earl of Dumbarton, because it had the word 'dumb' in it!

paintedwallpaper · 06/03/2025 15:06

All the Meghan baiters might as well carry pitchforks TBH. It's pretty much the same thing.

Purplebunnie · 06/03/2025 15:07

I haven't read the full thread, but the children of William and Catherine used to be referred to/used the surname Cambridge and now use Wales as did their father and also Harry. M & H are just using the same formula

I live in Sussex as well and don't give two hoots. She can call herself Meghan Hove or Meghan Eastbourne or Meghan Hastings (wouldn't recommend this one as it's a shitty little town). She can call herself whatever she wants and change it by deed pole. Nobody has exclusivity on a surname or on any name for that matter

Hammy19 · 06/03/2025 15:07

I imagine that it's her children's surname, and she wants to have the same name as her children? Not sure why that's an issue

Ginmonkeyagain · 06/03/2025 15:07

Isn't Duchess of Sussex her title, not her surname? Harry's surname is Windsor (or Mountbatten-Windsor to be completely correct) not Sussex.

May be we need to ship out some copies of Debrett's correct form?🤣

It's highly unlikely. But it makes a nice sound bite, so why not call it a fact?
