California not Sussex

I was born and grew up on the Surrey Sussex border. My brother currently lives in Sussex, my mum spent her retirement in Sussex, my grandparents lived in Sussex their whole lives, I had Saturday and holiday jobs in Sussex, my friends at school lived in Sussex.

I do not like or agree with Ms Markle having the 'Duchess of Sussex' title. She has spent all of 6 hours of her entire life here. She doesn't represent or care about me and the rest of the population of Sussex. She doesn't even like the UK. She will probably never set foot in the UK again, she hates our royal family and our country.

I cant really do much about the title being given to her. But now she wants people to refer to her as 'Meghan Sussex' according to her new netflix show.

Why?????

Why Meghan do you want you and your family to have a surname of a place you have barely ever been to, know nothing about, and which is located in a country you dislike and will never return to?

Can't you call yourself Meghan California instead? You can call yourself anything informally, and if you want to change your name formally, there is probably a way that you and Harry and the kids could adopt 'California' as your new surname.

Why oh why take/steal our home county as your new name. I get the 'duchess of Sussex' title is given to you, but you don't need to use it, and you definitely don't need to call yourself 'Meghan Sussex'.

If you want our name then come visit. Spend time here. Visit the locals, buy OUR jam, invest in OUR schools, donate money to local charities, show interest in the place you have adopted as yours. Visit us regularly. Learn about the culture, the people, the place.

AIBU for thinking Meghan should make the effort to get to know Sussex if she now wants to be called 'Meghan Sussex'? If she doesn't want anything to do with us and will never come here again, she shouldn't call herself 'Meghan Sussex'.

That's not what happened at all, she actually said she got on well with the Queen and she and Harry cleared up any speculation when people were suggesting that the Queen had made racist remarks about the baby.

There probably are some racist idiots out there. But equally, there are people who don't like her because she's just not very nice. Nothing to do with the colour of her skin. And I'd guess most people that don't like her are not racist, they just see her as an unpleasant person and don't care what her skin colour is.

She did a horrible curtsey thing in front of the world which was a direct piss take of the queen and our country's traditions. That was her. I saw it. No excuses. She was rude and disrespectful.

I think it's daft to be upset about something like this, personally, the aristocracy often have titles unrelated to any places they actually visit. There's no established duty associated a title that means the holder has to do XYZ for the place (at least, that I'm aware of). The titles are meaningless in so many ways.

Sure some aristocrats still hold tracts of land in the places named in their titles, or live in the same seats their family has done for centuries (eg the Dukes of Northumberland) but plenty don't.

Buckingham Palace was originally Buckinghamshire House, built by the Duke of Buckingham..

Edward & Sophie were the Wessexes and yet, having lived in Wessex my entire life, I don't think they've ever done anything specific for the area defined as Wessex. Now the Duke & Duchess of Edinburgh I don't see them favouring that town.

The title was chosen for the Sussexs because the Queen needed a senior Duchy to bestow upon them, one untainted by scandal. That's all. She had to pick one which already existed but not held by any living person, which is a short list.

And using Sussex as a surname is standard. Eugenie & Beatrice before marriage used York as a surname, William & Harry used Wales (after their fathers title Prince of Wales).

Royal surnames don't work the same way as non-royalsm.

My surname is a UK town I visited once on a school trip. It’s an absolute hole.

But my surname is probably derived from the fact that someone who lived their owned my ancestors 🤷🏽‍♀️

I feel very very deeply for anyone impacted by racism or suicidal ideation.

I've devoted the majority of my adult life to working with people in mental health crisis and to people from marginalised backgrounds and with families involved in child protection proceedings. Issues of suicide, mental health, racism or any other form of discrimination are close to my heart and I absolutely in no way mean to cause harm to anyone.

There's a lot of people who aren't very nice. They don't get the volume of hate aimed at them like Meghan does - it's really unhinged behaviour.

It's so clear who's judgement has been completely and utterly clouded by the gutter press. The vast majority of people have never met her, and don't know what she's really like.

The people that think they do know what she's really like have stolen their opinions from elsewhere, and the elsewhere is from people like Piers Morgan (who only turned on her because she didn't want to spend time with him.) IMO of course.

The royals are a made up construct as are their names so I don’t give a shit what they call themselves.

I don't have a strong opinion of them really although I do think prince Harry acts like a sulky teenager with little to no self awareness, I don't understand the hatred of her I mean people spend time hating her its just very odd.
