California not Sussex

CaliforniaNotSussex · 06/03/2025 13:28

I was born and grew up on the Surrey Sussex border. My brother currently lives in Sussex, my mum spent her retirement in Sussex, my grandparents lived in Sussex their whole lives, I had Saturday and holiday jobs in Sussex, my friends at school lived in Sussex.

I do not like or agree with Ms Markle having the 'Duchess of Sussex' title. She has spent all of 6 hours of her entire life here. She doesn't represent or care about me and the rest of the population of Sussex. She doesn't even like the UK. She will probably never set foot in the UK again, she hates our royal family and our country.

I cant really do much about the title being given to her. But now she wants people to refer to her as 'Meghan Sussex' according to her new netflix show.

Why?????

Why Meghan do you want you and your family to have a surname of a place you have barely ever been to, know nothing about, and which is located in a country you dislike and will never return to?

Can't you call yourself Meghan California instead? You can call yourself anything informally, and if you want to change your name formally, there is probably a way that you and Harry and the kids could adopt 'California' as your new surname.

Why oh why take/steal our home county as your new name. I get the 'duchess of Sussex' title is given to you, but you don't need to use it, and you definitely don't need to call yourself 'Meghan Sussex'.

(Some of) The people of Sussex do not want you to have our name

If you want our name then come visit. Spend time here. Visit the locals, buy OUR jam, invest in OUR schools, donate money to local charities, show interest in the place you have adopted as yours. Visit us regularly. Learn about the culture, the people, the place.

AIBU for thinking Meghan should make the effort to get to know Sussex if she now wants to be called 'Meghan Sussex'? If she doesn't want anything to do with us and will never come here again, she shouldn't call herself 'Meghan Sussex'.

If you had any idea of history, you'd know how titles such as 'Suffolk' or 'Norfolk' (Lord/Lady thereof) are taken upon being conferred a peerage.
Their meaning in relation to their 'home' and geographyis irrelevant.
You are using this to generate more hatred towards Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
Yes, it sticks in my craw, but that is her title and she can use it whenever and wherever she pleases. You need to wind your neck in, suck it up and give over with your goadyness based on supreme ignorance.
I am not a MM fan, but posts such as this are unnecessary, goady and demonstrate ignorance of peerage and history.
If it bugs you so much, move to Yorkshire; she cannot call herself duchess of Sussex there, so should help.

I totally agree. I too find it rather odd that she wants her surname to be an English county when she hates the UK so much and will do everything she can to avoid coming here.

Sigh. Again, it's not that she wants it si much as that's what it is.

All the Meghan baiters might as well carry pitchforks TBH. It's pretty much the same thing.

As a republican, I find it very entertaining. 😁

It's one thing being 'meghan, duchess of Sussex' (and I don't agree she should have that title). But it seems Meghan the feminist doesn't want to keep her Markle surname and instead what's to be Mrs Meghan Sussex. Surely she could call herself anything? And why does she still want the bloody title anyway? She can f right off.

The jealousy is strong in this one.

CaliforniaNotSussex · 06/03/2025 13:51

I really don't.

I am quite vocal on racism normally and always call it out. But Meghan just seems not nice. Nothing to do with her skin colour.

When megs and harry were getting married the whole of the UK was behind them, including the papers and including the tabloids and including me. Everyone was optimistic and thought they were a lovely couple.

Meghan's own behaviour has shown her true personality and it's not nice. Nothing to do with her skin colour.

Methinks you doth protest to much...

Maybe but it felt great to have a massive rant! 🤣

It wasn't a rant. It was a nasty post

I feel very very deeply for anyone impacted by racism or suicidal ideation.

I've devoted the majority of my adult life to working with people in mental health crisis and to people from marginalised backgrounds and with families involved in child protection proceedings. Issues of suicide, mental health, racism or any other form of discrimination are close to my heart and I absolutely in no way mean to cause harm to anyone.

If anyone is impacted negatively by my post I apologise.

Please speak to your doctor if you have been triggered and if anyone genuinely feels triggered by what was meant as a light hearted rant then I am deeply sorry.

Well, that's bloody worrying, to have someone with your thoughts and willingness to share you narrow-mindedness, in a position 'helping' those with MH issues.
This weak apology does not ameliorate the things you have posted.

SL2924 · 06/03/2025 14:31

She doesn’t hate the uk. The uk press were (and still are) absolute racist bastards to her. So why would she live here?

It doesn’t matter if she has or hasn’t been to Sussex. Should everyone with a place name as a surname have to spend time there? That is utterly ridiculous.

Get over yourself.

My surname is that of one of the London guilds, but I was nurse.
Perhaps the OP would have me drummed out of the country because I am claimimg to be something I am not...
😃

southerngirl10 · 06/03/2025 22:52

I think she should state which Sussex she means - there's east and west Sussex, not just Sussex. May she should be called Meghan West Sussex, Or, to show that the she really knows the area and is not just some fly by not night tourist, how about - Meghan Bognor?

Anyone for Harry Hastings?

PinkArt · 06/03/2025 14:07

When you write hateful posts like this they won't affect Meghan, who isn't going to be trawling Mumsnet to see what small minded people think. They will however potentially be read by someone who has suicidal thoughts and reads that people won't believe them. Or someone who's suffered racial abuse and reads that people won't believe them. There was a lot of discourse around this, and how damaging such comments can be, when Piers Morgan left GMB.

This.
Well said.
Anyone struggling might just see that they won't be believed, accused of putting it on, and bottle it up all the more.
Shitty, nasty, spiteful posts, all about someone you've never met.

It is her surname though, as in it's her husband's and she's taken the name too, like many women do when they get married.
Whether you like the fact it is or not, it is her surname. Nothing to do with "what, she doesn't like England so no she can't have that name!"
Ridiculous.

There is something about publically dissing your family that I just can't tolerate. It's not that harry and Meghan's family's are wonderful. I'm sure that's far from the truth but it's not ok to public ally air the laundry. I don't know where that value comes from or why I hold it so much, but I do.

My parents have done some terrible terrible things, but I'd never tell the whole world about it. My siblings and I have had arguments, but I'd never tell the world, write a book and public ally criticise them knowing they'd have no right of reply. I struggle to understand how someone could do this.

But you'll share your ignorance of RF titles and UK history (and barely veiled racism) shamelessly on a public forum?

CaliforniaNotSussex · 06/03/2025 16:46

My first post on megs! But not my first post on Mumsnet :) I changed my name because I know there are some Sussex squad members that use this forum and can be v passionate in their defence of Meghan and harry, and can end up completely trashing any poster that posts about them! So wanted to protect my privacy :) ironically.

How cowardly to change your username.
I mean, can you imagine if some person really was slated for changing their name...

What is Sussex culture? I'm from there and can't think of many distinguishing features from the rest of the south England counties.

We have our own flag, the cobalt blue with the gold martlets, and our motto is "We wont be druv." We are fierce and independent, yet cultured! Also very cool as we have Brighton and the Lewes bonfire celebrations. We have a specific type of house, the red half-tiles, and special food like Sussex Pond Pudding. And banoffee pie was invented at the Hungry Monk in Jevington.

If Wales (an actual country) has to put up with Charles and then William when we know the real prince of wales is Michael Sheen, then you can surely cope with someone thousands of miles away using it as a name. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ah yes, Sheen. Mr 'only welsh actors can play welsh people/only gay people can play gay peopl, but I can play an american/english/mars person, but no, I am not a massive bell-end hypocrit' Sheen.
Great example

ThisFluentBiscuit · 06/03/2025 23:15

I mean, Kate and William are absolutely nothing to do with Wales, either. Those titles come from way back in the mists of time when Britain was a collection of small kingdoms. It's tradition, not anything to do with how well the holder knows the place. In the case of Harry and Meghan, they should have had the Sussex title taken away from them if they're not going to live in England and make visits to Sussex though, imo.

Michael Sheen is the peoples prince. God bless that lovely man who just wrote off £1m worth of debt for complete strangers 🙏

Oh, yes, such a lovely man, and this 'personal gift' of a million quid isn't a tax dodge or anything, honest guv.
He should be beatified immediately before the Pop pops his clogs.

I don’t think you know the story. He didn’t “gift” £1m he wrote off £1m worth of debt. If you don’t like him that’s fine and maybe this was for tax purposes but whatever his reasoning 900 people are now better off thanks to it.
Also this isn’t a new cause for him, In 2018 he started the End High Cost Credit Alliance to try and stop companies like Wonga from charging exorbitant interest rates.
This isn’t a Michael Sheen thread though so if you have issue with the man, I suggest you create a new thread elsewhere

It matters to me because I like Sussex! And I like the UK (usually 🙂) and it pisses me off that someone who hates us, who has buggered off and stuck two fingers up the queen and royal traditions, has declared to the world how much the name 'sussex' means to her. I mean, wtf?

I sincerely hope she has not stuck two fingers up the queen.

I don’t really care, but don’t she and Harry claim that they wanted to stay in the royal family, just on different terms, and the decision to leave was not made by them? The stuff about her ‘hating’ the UK and ‘hating’ the royal family is Daily Mail narrative.

Of course! I guess if people want to value narcissism, fakeness and money over family that's fine. I shouldn't let it frustrate me so much that this is the state of humanity and the direction some people choose to go in life. I don't know why it does bother me. Maybe because I feel for the people who have been hurt in this

Well, other people have said it before me, and more eloquently, but I'm about to pile on with a reminder of the circling of the wagons around Andrew.

You seem to have an issue with narcissism, fakensss, and "money over family" (whatever that means, in the immortal words of Charles, then Prince of Wales). So why not have a go at Andrew, and the late Queen who shelled out millions to make the bad publicity go away? Why choose to direct your ire at a woman who left a life of ease and cosseting?

I think you should do some honest reflection on the topic of why this bothers you.

The people you believe have been hurt by this - I assume you mean the house of Mountbatten-Windsor - are amply able to defend themselves. There is no need for the dozens of frequent posters on MN who start and contribute to threads tearing this woman apart to do so. In fact, the constant raking over is only serving to keep the dirty laundry out there in full view.
