California not Sussex

CaliforniaNotSussex · 06/03/2025 13:28

I was born and grew up on the Surrey Sussex border. My brother currently lives in Sussex, my mum spent her retirement in Sussex, my grandparents lived in Sussex their whole lives, I had Saturday and holiday jobs in Sussex, my friends at school lived in Sussex.

I do not like or agree with Ms Markle having the 'Duchess of Sussex' title. She has spent all of 6 hours of her entire life here. She doesn't represent or care about me and the rest of the population of Sussex. She doesn't even like the UK. She will probably never set foot in the UK again, she hates our royal family and our country.

I cant really do much about the title being given to her. But now she wants people to refer to her as 'Meghan Sussex' according to her new netflix show.

Why?????

Why Meghan do you want you and your family to have a surname of a place you have barely ever been to, know nothing about, and which is located in a country you dislike and will never return to?

Can't you call yourself Meghan California instead? You can call yourself anything informally, and if you want to change your name formally, there is probably a way that you and Harry and the kids could adopt 'California' as your new surname.

Why oh why take/steal our home county as your new name. I get the 'duchess of Sussex' title is given to you, but you don't need to use it, and you definitely don't need to call yourself 'Meghan Sussex'.

(Some of) The people of Sussex do not want you to have our name

If you want our name then come visit. Spend time here. Visit the locals, buy OUR jam, invest in OUR schools, donate money to local charities, show interest in the place you have adopted as yours. Visit us regularly. Learn about the culture, the people, the place.

AIBU for thinking Meghan should make the effort to get to know Sussex if she now wants to be called 'Meghan Sussex'? If she doesn't want anything to do with us and will never come here again, she shouldn't call herself 'Meghan Sussex'.

I cringed when I seen her correct the woman in her show and told her it’s Sussex and not Markle. Then proceeded to explain why saying how important it is to have the same name as her children. Completely oblivious and alienating millions of women who don’t share the same name as their kids.

I didn't have the same name as my DC until they changed theirs as adults. Genuinely never bothered me. Or them, they just didn't want their Dads name.
I've never felt alienated by women saying it mattered to them. It just didn't matter to me.

There's an irony to your resenting Meghan for correcting Mindy about what her married name is, when you refer to Mindy Kaling as 'the woman'!

It’s not ironic at all. I didn’t watch it myself as it would bore the pants off me. It was a
clip I happened to see of MM correcting the person as they were discussing it

She's allowed to articulate her thoughts and you are allowed to ignore them/understand they don't apply to you.

This isn't hard.

Of course she is but she’s not particularly liked these days and it’s stuff like that, that’s make people roll their eyes. She doesn’t do herself any favours

So watching the programme would bore the pants off you. But spending the day on MN discussing said programme doesn't 😂

I agree but why make a point of correcting someone on TV that millions will watch as it’s not a big deal you’re right.

Because when people get my name wrong I correct them. I've just never had to do it on national TV.

I find her boring and I’m not a fan but I find it interesting reading the comments by those that love her and feel she can’t do any wrong.

but she didn’t call her Megan McDonald. Markle was her name and she’s still very much known as that, so much so that hardly anyone refers to her as Meghan Sussex. The woman wasn’t being disrespectful she just called her what many people would.

Seems pedantic to correct her and I’m not at all surprised she did.

tinytemper66 · 08/03/2025 20:51

I feel the same way regarding William and his brood having the Wales surname.

tinytemper66 · 08/03/2025 20:51

BlumminFreezin · 06/03/2025 13:36

Kind of pales when you compare it to the P&P of Wales though. Now THAT is a piss take.

Absolutely

Maybe people should stop calling her MM then? It obviously matters to her.
I've got married friends who changed their name but don't care if I use their old name. I've also got friends who do care. Clearly Meghan is in the second camp.

JoyousEagle · 08/03/2025 20:54

Barbara Windsor?

Johnny Vegas?

Tom Holland?

But the concept of royal family surnames is a minefield, is it Windsor, Mountbatten, Sussex, Wales. There are different titles and Sussex is because of the Duke/Dutches title so if she disapproves so much about the ‘firm’ why make such a fuss about something that is a so associated with being part of it.

JoyousGreyOrca · 08/03/2025 21:09

@Pinkandcake she is married to Harry, that is why.

Like people being corrected when they call Catherine Kate?

Yes she is and the woman was swiftly reminded of that.

‘You keep saying MM, you know, I’m Sussex now’

Pinkandcake · 08/03/2025 21:16

Exactly but if Kate was doing a similar kind of ‘light hearted’ show, I can not imagine she would correct someone for using Kate instead of Catherine. That’s the difference between them. She would have every right to but I bet she wouldn’t.

cowdozer · 08/03/2025 21:17

Are you married OP? If so, have you taken your husband's surname?

I bet that if she did, she wouldn't get the same amount of attention for it. People would need much more understanding that of course she wants to be known by her actual name.

countingthedays945 · 08/03/2025 21:22

She's not Meghan Sussex anyway. Surely it's Meghan Windsor isn't it? I don't know tbh. I don't even give any *** so god knows why I'm replying.

Their vain attempts at stardom will falter
Their marriage will no doubt fail.
Harry will be taken back into the fold because well 'he's one of us'.
She will end up marrying some Greek millionaire and stop having to make sad dramas on Netflix.

If the Royal Family are so upset by her using a name that their rules have deemed she is entitled to use, then why don't they change the rules and remove the titles from them? If they are not that bothered by it, why is anyone else? People who aren't affected by it in any way? Is it something to do with the fact that they would be under pressure to remove Andrews titles if they removed Harry's? Why don't they want to remove Andrews?

JoyousGreyOrca · 08/03/2025 23:48

They will never remove Harrys titles because it would mean they would have to remove Andrews. And they would never do that to Andrew.

I agree it was a slightly cringe moment. But she can't be blamed for alienating millions of women?! Thats insane. Many women choose not to have the same name as their children. She actually said it is important to HER. She didn't say she thinks it is important for all women to have the same name as their children. If any woman who doesn't have the same name as their children feels alienated because some celebrity said it is important to them personally, then that woman needs to grow up and stop hinging their feelings on the personal preference of a celebrity.

Yeah fair enough, but it seems she can’t help herself, she can’t seem to keep quiet. It’s this sort of thing that makes people think FFS 🙄 She made a big deal out of something that really want a big deal and almost belittled/scalded the woman.

Alienating was probably not quite the word I was meaning but there is and was a stigma for some about single parents, unmarried mothers and being divorced etc and not having the same surname as your child could be indicative of that.
