‘Game the system’ disability benefits

1000 replies

Tomatochocolate · 05/03/2025 11:30

WTF
just read a bbc article about welfare reforms

Apparently ministers think that it’s an incentive to claim disability benefits as the incentive is no work commitments on UC. That claimants ‘game the system’

It’s a long process and really hard to get awarded dla or pip. It’s not just ticking a box that says ‘I’m too sick to work’.

AIBU to think this is just horrific

Just pointing out that disabilities and chronic health conditions are not. a. choice. Which is what your examples fall under largely.

I know. Read my posts about my own condition.

@XenoBitch if I were you I would stop engaging with certain posters. I hope you are OK.

Yes, you can get sharps bins for free. And your specialty food is not really a disability cost when everyone needs food anyway.

But I am not being sincere in saying that.

You are right. This is the 3rd thread we have come to a head on. Am going to protect myself now, and just hope others call them up on it.

Nope, many people are able to work because they can get PIP.
It is to put disabled people on a level playing field with everyone else.

It is not for this. It is to pay for care needed, whether personal care or supervision,

The thing is, I agree with all of that. I don’t make exceptions for myself.

There are no specifications for what the money is spent on. That is for the recipient to decide on.

No, it is so disabled people are not at a disadvantage compared to non-disabled people.
We have a welfare system here that means that someone's disability should not mean they are out of pocket... because they can't help it.
Payments are based on needs, but not financial ones. No one is asked what they spend their PIP on.

That is surely a minority as you have to supply evidence and have assessments

The 'evidence' is based on someone filling out a form. There's agencies who will do it for you for £70 and guarantee you'll get awarded it.

People talk to people they know - rock up with borrowed crutches, say they shit themselves daily, can't do a thing don't ya know?

You can spend it on what you want. But all the questions are based on needing care or supervision.

Funny then that 53% of PIP claims are turned down initially.

What is it you are getting at? That someone who says they need care/supervision but does not spend it on that, is fraudulent?

verysmellyjelly · 05/03/2025 21:27

Facebook Marketplace isn't a serious suggestion. It might provide someone with furniture but it would never provide eg dental care or any of the other necessary costs that can arise and are genuinely very challenging on a low income. It also means you have to be able to travel to collect, which most genuinely disabled people (and I'm assuming everyone on this thread with a disability is completely genuine, I think it's unlikely that anyone faking would be likely to come onto MN, it's not really the site of choice) cannot do.

Sorry but I’m sat ugly laughing over the fact you thought my suggestion of FB marketplace applied to dental care rather than a microwave. You can’t seriously have thought I was suggesting that??????

JoyousGreyOrca · 05/03/2025 21:28

@XenoBitch I am not eligible for PIP, I do have additional costs. The idea the government can cover all costs of being disabled is unrealistic.
And lots of people with more serious physical disabilities do not get anywhere near the cost of their disability through PIP. PIP favours certain types of conditions.

verysmellyjelly · 05/03/2025 21:29

@Wildflowers99 No, I was making the point that it seemed like a very limited suggestion in terms of actual helpfulness. I don't know any case of someone disabled enough to need a benefit like PIP who would be able to utilise FB Marketplace unless they have a fully abled spouse to collect.

No I did not say that! I am saying the purpose of PIP is to help people who need additional care or supervision. It is not to cover all the additional costs of being disabled. For some people it might do so, but that is not its purpose.

The state cannot do absolutely everything for you. It cannot send a courier to collect a microwave for you from Marketplace because you’ve found yourself in a position where you can’t do it. We have to use our own practical skills as adults to solve these problems.

Except I have a family with bipolar on PIP and council tax reduction (expect you’ll be along in a moment to say I’ve made it all up, do carry on as I’m expecting it)

You did not state that at first though did you? You tried to make it sound like everyone who receives PIP is going to benefit from reduced council tax. That is not true.

A person could use their PIP to pay someone to pick up an item from Marketplace on their behalf that a non-disabled person could have hopped on a bus to pick up. A good example of using PIP to level the playing field.
