I tried.

I really did.

But JFC it's absolutely awful.

"Come and watch me make the most basic of crafts while telling me how much you admire me, and I gently patronise you"

Really awful.

I like it. She's soothing to watch and listen to. I've had an incredibly stressful week, and her show has been a balm.

I won't go on any of the 7 (?!) 'As Ever' threads on the RF board to say so; positive posters get ridiculed. I've rated it on Netflix; that's my review done. Only the hate-watchers are searching out IDMB/Rotten Tom/Google etc to leave -ve reviews.

BustingBaoBun · 09/03/2025 09:23

I don't think that people are obsessively slagging her off.

I hope you are joking with that comment! Scores of newspaper articles knocking her over 7 years and literally thousands of threads on Mumsnet where every single thing she says or does, or what she wears, is dissected and criticised endlessly. One smile or grin or a creased linen outfit can create hundreds of negative posts.
So please don't say it isn't obsessive

A wise move. There's no point in going on those numbered threads. One slightly positive post and the herd mentality kicks in to take it apart so that any positivity is sharply replaced with negativity and /or ridicule.

TheKeatingFive · 09/03/2025 09:30

I don't venture near the RF board much these days, but I had a quick look the other day and was laughing at the fact that the first 6 threads were all about Meghan.

She left the RF 5 years ago, but she'll live rent free in some people's heads forever. 😂

DaphneduM · 09/03/2025 09:32

Jacquettes · 09/03/2025 04:31

I think now Meghan has produced something concrete, whether you like it or not is irrelevant really, the obsessive negativity should stop. Give the poor woman a chance. Whatever she has supposedly done, she has more than paid her dues in the number of nasty comments, articles, podcasts etc created to criticise her.

@OrdinaryO888 I agree.

I totally agree. I've enjoyed watching the programmes - of course there are going to be cultural differences to the UK - she's American!!! I think it achieves what it probably set out to achieve - a lovely, escapist programme with beautiful food, scenery, clothes, kitchen and gardens. I'm looking forward to watching Series 2.

I would add that she's a very accomplished woman who has been subjected to appalling treatment by the media, and by extension, people who believe the skewed information they read about her.

uhhuhuhhuhuhuh · 09/03/2025 09:34

Keeping to the topic of the show. Even the title is nauseating. Highly focussed on her performative handwriting. Maybe a new episode could be a how to pen your own family scroll? Or has she done that already?

Another side line could be a job writing the place name cards for dinner parties of the 1%? Nice remote work she could do in the evenings after bed.

I knooow having such a beautiful handwriting is such a crime isn't it?. Awww the horror....🤣
P S. She is the 1%

She definitely doesn't need a 'sideline', their net worth has absolutely rocketed this year. 😂

Again, I am not sure about the majority of people not liking it.

The poll at the top of this thread seems to discount your perspective, 609 people responded and almost 90% agree with the OP that it is crap.

This seems to be the general consensus from anyone who has watched it.

uhhuhuhhuhuhuh · 09/03/2025 09:50

It's amusing that having married a British man she has no clue that the sensibility of this televisual spectacle is so off beam it's incredible that it got past a written treatment.

For Brits watching this kind of thing is like enduring the sound of nails down a blackboard. Mary Berry and Nigella are national treasures and just about the only people who would remotely have permission to offer domestic styling tips without national eye rolling. Meghan is NOWHERE near this level of popularity.

Yes I'm sure she's a nice girl who means well and didn't mean to slag off her entire family on telly and in papers, but well, she did. Handwriting or not, she's just not very likeable. That's not necessarily all her fault but she doesn't have the ability to read a room at all. If she had an ounce of sense she'd know (or have listened to advice) on how important a show about authenticity needs to be actually authentic.

It would have been TV gold if it was in their home and she'd have cut to Haz on the barker lounger with a Heineken watching rugby and told him to put his feet down and help with place names.

It's not authentic. It's fucking nonsense.

uhhuhuhhuhuhuh · 09/03/2025 09:52

When I say TV gold. I mean slightly more watchable.

As has been pointed out multiple times, this was made primarily for a US / global audience.

Its a bit rich when people in the UK call Meghan a narcissist, yet at the same time cannot grasp that everything she does is not all about them.

muhlezur · 09/03/2025 09:59

Well the US audience don't seem to like it much either, neither do the global audience.

uhhuhuhhuhuhuh · 09/03/2025 09:59

I didn't call her a narc.

What you mean to say is it's for stupid people who watch dumbed down tv.

It's on our screens so people are going to have fair opinions on a woman whose words damaged the British monarchy. I mean she's worse than Trump on that. At least he was consistent in his arse kissing and complete rudeness.

But that's what negative posters do? I haven't voted, nor will lots of people who don't feel the same. I take little notice of Mumsnet polls having seen bizarre results on all sorts of subjects before!

Yes but a poll made on a platform where we have hundreds if not thousands of threads dedicated to tearing a single woman down is not representative of "the majority of people".

What you little MM haters seem to not understand is that your little cocoon/ echo chamber of MM haters is nor representative of the general public( both in Britain and more importantly abroad).

When will you understand that normal people who enjoy a certain content/ celebrity move very silently.

They don't create threads day after day year on year, they don't leave reviews. They just engage with the content/ celebrity they like and move on silently with their lives.

Hate sells more papers, drives media engagement and makes more noise - it has always been like this and it will always be. However, you are being fooled and given a perception than there is this universal disdain for MM and her content when it is not the reality.

Tomatotater · 09/03/2025 10:02

They're not free to make a living after all was said and done. It was naive and self serving
They're not free to make a living? How are they going to live? They get criticised for asking for money from the Royal Family, so they try and make money for themselves and they are endlessly criticised and apparently have no right to make a living from that either? All because they had an interview with Oprah ( not the first- Fergie did one and said more or less the same thing) and he wrote a book about his own experiences with his own family (again, not the first one to do this- the list is endless, and included both his parents, who also both said more or less the same thing, obviously without the racism. Charles was extremely critical of both his parents)
I'm not quite sure what the people who slag them off want as a result of all their endless harassment. Don't want them to work, but don't want them to come back to the Royal Family or have any money from them. Want Harry to be deported (without his wife and children) but don't want The King to have anything to do with them and take away their titles? At least Jeremy Clarkson was honest when he said he wanted Meghan ( Just Meghan, not Harry, the person who's a member of the family he slagged off who did most of the slagging off) to be punished by being dragged naked through the streets being pelted with excrement. How about being live streamed starving to death on the streets? enough? They say they want them to just go away and live quietly, yet know full well that algorithms are recording their engagement and it is their engagement that is keeping them in the public eye. The reason they are given silly prizes, is because all publicity is good publicity. These prize givers know that their obscure award will be global news as soon as they give it to Harry. How come there is so much engagement if they are so unpopular? It is either from all the people derangedly clicking on every article, watching every programme, commenting on every site endlessly to slag her off or most of the engagement is from people who like her which is apparently not true because she is so deeply unpopular. So, even by their own standards them being in the public eye should be laid firmly on the shoulders of the #haterz

Any show with hired 'friends' is toe curling. Jamie Oliver did it and so did Nigella.

I saw a bit.

It's absolutely fine if you like that kind of lifestyle cookery program.

It's not my thing. But it's no different to many other offerings.

muhlezur · 09/03/2025 10:06

The RF board has a very limited number of posters, I would be surprised if it hast 609 unique posters who all came on AIBU to screw a poll about Meghan Markles Netflix show..

Yes, but bottom line is detractors cannot bear to see anything even remotely positive about Meghan. It's treated like a personal affront and an insult to them. Even saying amongst a wholly negative thread something like "actually I thought that dress looked nice on her" will spawn countless posts about how that dress cannot possibly look good on her because blah blah blah a million reasons why she looks shit in it 🤣

It's a shame that the middle of the road posters who aren't fans, but think she's ok but flawed, can't post any more. This thread is refreshing because I can here. At the moment anyway!

muhlezur · 09/03/2025 10:11

What you little MM haters

It always get so personal and insulting from the MM fans,

Look, it's' only a critique of a show, which the majority happen to think is shite, she made a terrible show and most people don't love her enough to pretend it isn't crap.

BustingBaoBun · 09/03/2025 10:17

@Tomatotater
Brilliant post, you put it so well.

I've asked more than once, what do people want? They don't want to see their faces back in the UK ever again versus wanting Harry coming back, divorced unhappy covered in sackcloth and ashes begging forgiveness for falling in love.
I would've thought the detractors would be pleased Meghan has possibly found a niche interest with a series but no. It's all shit, rubbish show how dare she.

Yeah muhlezer the series is so shit, another one has been commissioned 🤣
