But JFC it's absolutely awful.

"Come and watch me make the most basic of crafts while telling me how much you admire me, and I gently patronise you"

Really awful.

Her show has just been renewed for Season 2.

Mama Meghan is out there making her own millions now so those who don't like her and don't want to watch her show don't have to support her.

BackoffSusan · 08/03/2025 20:41

@skullbabe no I would have thought that if you'd gone to the effort of making a TV show ,you probably could have made more effort than buying some shop bought pretzels and filming yourself transferring them from one bag to another and tying it in a bow. I would have expected her to have made something from scratch that was vaguely interesting.

Please let's not pretend that there weren't dishes made from scratch on the show.
People have the right to not like the show for whatever reason, but please let us not disassociate from reality.

BackoffSusan · 08/03/2025 20:57

@LipglossAlly I'm not pretending. I'm specifically referencing the fact that someone thought it was worth filming Meghan transfer a bag of store bought pretzels into another bag and tying a bow around it. They really must have been scraping the barrel for ideas that day.

BackoffSusan · 08/03/2025 20:38

No it's not @BustingBaoBun watch matt tebbutt presenting Saturday Kitchen - humour, personality, taking an interest in his guests. How about Rick Stein presenting a cooking show - passion for food, sharing some useful knowledge about the meal - background about the origins of the cuisine etc or location.
Perhaps this is an American TV vs UK tv thing because I found the Kardasians dull as dishwater. I think I only lasted 30 mins of that. Maybe if you like watching paint dry, then this kind of stuff is palatable.

Not interested in watching paint dry but every single presenter of a cooking programme presents themselves in a good, and surely you agree with that

I am not sure about that.
As I have said, there were multiple dishes made from scratch and it is important to highlight that.

What some fail to realise( or maybe are just being disingenuous) is that this is not a mere cooking show. It is also about hosting and presentation.
How you organise and present a dish can make all the difference.

You might buy some pretzels from a local supermarket and decide to use a different container just because it makes for a better presentation. There is nothing wrong about doing that, many people do it( including me). It is all part of elevating even the most simple things.

BackoffSusan · 08/03/2025 21:07

@BustingBaoBun that wasn't my point. Obviously any person on TV wants themselves to be perceived as "good". But where's the personality, this seems superficial. It lacks depth, substance, direction, authenticity. What's the angle? Rich, perfect Californian trad wife presents an inauthentic insight into her life? Even the friendships don't seem sincere. It's not filmed at home. It's not relatable. Is it supposed to be aspirational?

BackoffSusan · 08/03/2025 21:12

@LipglossAlly I don't think pouring pretzels from one bag to another is "elevating it". I dont think alot of her content was tv worthy or interesting. I thought it was tone deaf. But you clearly enjoyed the show. I didn't and I won't be watching any other episodes. I'm not her audience. I'm a busy mum and I like hosting but I definitely don't have spare time to 'elevate pretzels' and even if I did I would not be doing that.

She's not a Trad wife
All TV food presenters rarely film in their homes, I could list all that don't if you want me to
You don't like her so won't find depth or authenticity. That's not what I'm looking for when I watch something like this. I want to be lulled into thinking, I could do this! I'm a good cook, very much so, but my presentation is crap. I will watch for just that
If you don't like the presenter you won't like the programme. Simples.

BackoffSusan · 08/03/2025 21:19

@BustingBaoBun you're right, I don't like her, what gave it away? I did give her a chance though, but no, I still don't like her.
Hopefully she finds some personality for the second series.
I like to be inspired by cookery shows but I don't find bagging pretzels very inspirational or making spaghetti with tomatoes and spinach. It's basic. But I also thought Nigella was overrated.

It is supposed to be aspirational, yes.

What is this obsession with wanting her to film in her house, why are people not allowed to use a set to film a TV show? Since when not using a fictional set to film a show has became so controversial? Do people apply this fake outrage to all TV hosts that choose an actual set to film or is it only reserved for MM?

Do people really think in this way or are they spouting these same 5 -6 points that the media rags are pushing to make money from this fake, forced outrage?

I think some interactions with some of her friends may come off as a bit awkward ( not with all of them) maybe because they are not particularly confident with cooking especially with cameras on their face.

Not liking the personality of a host is a subjective matter( some don't like her style as host while others adore it and find it relaxing).

The host is a California former actress who married a prince and leaves in leafy, dreamy Montecito - yes it is supposed to be aspirational.

Did you watch the show expecting Meghan to be pushing a trolley at Asda? I don't get how you are supposed to find her completely relatable.

What I would say is that there are recipes and hosting hacks that can be easily replicated and implemented in the day -to-day life if you are into these kind of things - many people are.

Fair enough! We can't like all the same people!
I have chef's I love, chef's I can't stand, presenters of food programmes who I think are pretty decent, others who are really useless!
It's all different with varying opinions!

I don't necessarily agree with the expression " Hopefully she finds a personality for the second season"( she has lots of personality/skills and desire to learn from others), I would reward this phrase by saying the personality of the host doesn't resonate with me

It seems they were already filmed and put aside for a second season anyway so it’s not been renewed as such, just split into two. If she gets a third season now that will be a renewal and something of a coup for her. She’s not out of the woods yet regarding the NF contract.

Please can you put the same energy and watch season 2 "whilst hating every minute of it " so that we can have a season 3😂

BackoffSusan · 08/03/2025 21:46

@LipglossAlly I wanted it to feel authentic but it's the opposite. Don't you think it's odd that a "house guest" appears in the morning after stopping over and then they're just pretending to be making a meal together. There are so many contradictions. One minute she's whipping up one pan pasta because she's a "busy working mum" and the next minute she's making candles (which I can't imagine many busy working mums have time for) or sticking flowers on every meal.

I don't expect her to be pushing a trolley around Asda but I do think she could have found a way to engage with the audience and be relatable and the obvious angle would have been being a mum. But this is tone deaf. It's self indulgent, superficial. You never get beneath the veneer

It's not that I don't like her personality. It's more that she doesn't seem to have any personality or charisma. It's boring.

The only bit i found hilarious was an ep where a chef who was cooking with her was using Monosodium Glutamate. Megan looked a bit shocked and said back in the 90's people didn't want do consume MSG but she didn't know why. the chef said the reason why everyone would say no to MSG was because they were racist.

skullbabe · 08/03/2025 21:53

Why was that hilarious?

Because a lot of people have serious allergies to MSG. Its not something i want to consume because its pretty bad for you. The idea that anyone who doesn't want to consume that flavour enhancer is somehow racist, is hysterically ridiculous in my opinion

In 1968, a letter published in the New England Journal of Medicine coined the term “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome,” blaming MSG for symptoms like headaches and nausea. However, scientific research has not conclusively proven that MSG causes these symptoms in the general population.

MSG occurs naturally in foods like tomatoes, cheese, Parmesan and mushrooms, but its use in Asian cuisine has been disproportionately demonised. Meanwhile, similar flavour enhancers in Western foods (like glutamate in Marmite for example ) haven’t faced the same stigma.

While concerns about MSG itself aren’t inherently racist, the way it has been historically portrayed—particularly in relation to Asian cuisine—has racist undertones. And if you have listened and watched Asian content creators you would understand that.

I avoid MSG in any food not just asian food. It's in a lot of processed food like crisps to make them taste better.
Catherine Zeta Jones has said she is allergic to it and it makes her lips swell. But she'd probably be cancelled and called a racist if she refused to eat it in a restaurant.

If a chef's food is that good, it shouldn't need a flavour enhancer.

skullbabe · 08/03/2025 22:59

I’d like you to reread what I wrote.

And then read what you wrote.

Perhaps you see that you and I are not disagreeing about people having an allergy to MSG and that is reflected in the proportion of people who have anaphylaxis in the population. That does not negate the real harm that the narrative surrounding MSG use in Asian food has had on Asian people (because you will agree that the incidence of anaphylaxis in the population is low but the reported incidence of generalised non specific effects that occurs in many people when consuming MSG from Asian sources is high).

Wishing you well.
