I tried.

I really did.

But JFC it's absolutely awful.

"Come and watch me make the most basic of crafts while telling me how much you admire me, and I gently patronise you"

Really awful.

"The lowest level anyone could possibly be dehumanised"? Bloody hell, get a grip. If you really thing an unpleasant remark is the worst someone could be dehumanised I'm afraid you must be completely detached from the real world.

on here, on mumsnet - I thought that would go without saying.

in real life - yes - humans can do a lot worse than in a post.

Criticism =/= hate.

She chose to do a lifestyle show. It didn't land well, she didn't come across well. Lots of wannabe presenters don't. It's a skill.

She got the opportunity because of who she married. She doesn't present well. She doesn't have the skill set.

Why is it 'hate' to say that?

It isn't. It's inane dross in my opinion. I don't like or dislike her as an individual though.

Princessfluffy · 08/03/2025 06:48

I mainly blame Netflix for this and I'm annoyed that they have wasted so much of their subscription money on hopeless rubbish output like H&M. No wonder Netflix is struggling.

H&M have been extremely successful in monetising themselves without having anything much to offer in return. They have done surprisingly well since leaving the RF. I find their rank hypocrisy hard to stomach but clearly a lot of people (especially in the USA) aren't phased by this.

Is it hate to criticise someone?

Generally speaking no. But all this is something more than just a criticism of someone.

It is hate when it’s gone on for 8 long years and reaches the frenzied level it has when everything she does is forensically examined and criticised. And things she hasn’t done but is suspected or imagined to have done, or is predicted that she will do in future (fantasy in other words), also amount to hate - as 99% of the time she is being cast as evil, manipulating, conniving etc..

And it’s not only hate on social media. Traditional media has encouraged it for 8 years now. They are currently engaged in whipping it along under the guise of ‘reviews’. How many reviews does one show need? There are so many because it’s a click provoking, money making, hate industry.

Media outlets review TV shows.

They have reviewed this one. I am not sure why they shouldn't?

What are your thoughts on the content of the show? Did you enjoy it?

it’s been renewed for another season so even if people claim not to like it, someone is definitely watching it. I suppose it’s been talked about and written about so much now by people who are / not fans it’s made more people have a watch. I think it’s like everything they do, if everyone who says they wish they’d go away and never be seen again just stopped paying them any attention rather than clicking on articles and commenting on these sort of threads… maybe they would.

i watched the show btw 100% because of MM and I am sure I’m not the only one. Not because I’m a huge fan but very much out of curiosity and I’m sure I’m very much not alone on that.

YABU to sniff a turd expecting it to smell of roses

Hmm referring to a woman of colour as a turd.... questionable.

Well it's a beautiful show, I'll give them that. I feel that the format is a bit like Martha Stewart would be like if she were on the telly now. And some of the ideas aren't terrible- the crudite platter and pasta dish looked quite nice.

But she doesn't have the skillset or the personality for presenting, nor does she have the expertise and gravitas in this area, so it's boring and a bit cringe and just doesn't work.

Hi, I didn't mind it, it was just on in the back ground when I was writing an essay, A bit like watching an Instagram reel I suppose . Pretty to look at and didn't really have to concentrate on it.

I didn’t say the show shouldn’t be reviewed at all. Please read again.

I thought the show was light hearted lifestyle entertainment and beautifully shot. I’ve only watched 3 episodes so far.

Wagered incorrectly. I haven’t seen it and have no plans to. I think you’re unreasonable for posting TV show reviews in AIBU when there are at least three other sections it would be better suited to and there’s already another thread on the show with 100+ posts if you do need to post your views on AIBU. Your post wasn’t so insightful it needed its own post…

Who made you the thread police??

Ezlo · 08/03/2025 07:34

I didn't mind her until I saw the programme being advertised and she gets pissed off at people still calling her Meghan Markle instead of Meghan Sussex. What a first world thing to be offended by.

She should have done something about fashion, beauty and yoga, maybe with Doria. Would have watched that and MM knows that stuff. It's all very Trad Wife.

Yes, I think it's strange how she has morphed into the Trad Wife role, but maybe that's who she is. If you're going to do this kind of thing, you have to be quite natural and have genuine friends because otherwise, it does show. It's important to be natural and authentic, it's not a cookery show.
There's nothing inherently wrong with it, and that's how she wants to make a living, fine. However, I found some of the conversations a bit syrupy for my taste.

I don't think you understand what a trad wife is.

Meghan seems to like hosting. That's not being a trad wife.

I used to kick back against a Trad wife on Twitter. I can tell you, Meghan is not one.

Perhaps her aesthetic is to be a homemaker.
To be supportive of her husband and his role. To model clothes, to be in the kitchen. I'm not saying that's wrong, that's her choice and if that suits her, fine.
It seems very traditional to me?

I think I have, but really that's probably semantics.
I'm not criticising Meghan, if that's your issue. I actually don't have a problem with her, and if this is how she wants to earn money, good luck to her.

Well no. It's not about whether you're criticising her or not, just factual accuracy. Being into hosting / cooking for friends is not being a trad wife.

Ok. Disclaimer: I am not attacking Meghan. I never have.
I'm going to come off this thread now, because I've seen how these go.
One final point repeated: if this is how she wants to earn money, good luck to her. That's really my main point.

Newspapers review TV shows on p. 36. I was in the newsagent the other day and from memory the Sun, the Telegraph, the Daily Mail, the Times, all had a ‘review’ of this show (i.e. whipping up a froth against Meghan) as a front-page banner headline. That’s not business as usual. It is hate. It reflects incredibly badly on our country, tbh.

And I say that as someone who doesn’t particularly like her and thinks the show looks cringe, but she just isn’t important in the way they try to make her. Tbh whenever I see her on the front pages I assume there’s something else they’re trying to distract from, in this case maybe the fact that JD Vance had just been disrespecting British soldiers and they’ve said positive things about him in the past? I dunno, but I found it extremely interesting that he said something that from anyone else would have them in a rage, but somehow it’s Meghan who’s public enemy number one.

muhlezur · 08/03/2025 09:06

The trad wife is a whole subculture, it's actually a booming influencer trend at the moment and Meghan is flirting with a lot of their principles in her show.

The homemaking in floaty dresses, the flower picking, the bee keeping, the home cooking in the big beautiful kitchen, being their husband's biggest fan, the little kids running through the open meadow, collecting the homegrown eggs. So many of these 'Trad Wives' are uber wealthy (Ballerina Farm for example), same as Meghan.

While there are a minority of far right trad wives, that is not who posters are likening Meghan to.

Wonder if her mother would feel awkward about it, given how Meghan slagged off her 'latchkey kid' diet.
We don't all have the time to make flower petal donuts and fucking ladybird crostini 🙄
