If you're a non-meghan markle hater, what's your opinion on her show on netflix?

It's been panned but a lot of the press already hate her, hence my asking

Is it really that bad? I'm in my 30s and it doesn't seem aimed at my age group from the clips online.

There's one bad clip of her correcting mindy kaling on her name but I'm sure that's just been put out to make her look bad 😭

Worth a watch?

I watched the first episode as I like Martha Stewart/ barefoot contessa type shows as bubblegum for the brain. But it was dull and vapid and the tiny pasta portion in the first episode blew my mind. I won’t be watching another episode.

researchers3 · 06/03/2025 08:56

I don't have any strong feelings about her. I did see a trailer for her show and it looked dreadful - really cringe.

BonkersBaddies · 06/03/2025 08:53

Haha 😂 😂

I am sure people will tune into episode 1 due to all the hype! And then the ratings will tank! And netflix are pleased people will log in for episode one because then they'll find something actually quite good and get hooked onto watching that!

The show is shit. But I haven't criticised netflix themselves (however, there may come a point when they don't want people to think they only make shit shows, so at some point the benefits on markle will not outway the cost to netflix. Personally I think they might be hanging on to markle in the hope of getting some more juicy content - a divorce tell all, or interviews to publicise her memoire or something..)

Getting people to tune into episodes is the raison d'etre of broadcasters, yes. No evidence that ratings will tank, it seems like many binge watched most of it in one go. So win, win for Netflix and Meghan.

🤣🤣 win for netflix

Not sure Meghans aim. I think it was for everyone to love her(?) .. that hasn't happened, so no win for megs!

SengaNaLenga · 06/03/2025 09:00

I saw half an episode yesterday. I quite liked it! Her spaghetti dish looked tasty, I liked the way she explained how to plate it to look pretty (I'm the kind of messy person who needs such tips) and I'm going to have a go at the bath salts because I LOVE bath salts and they are so expensive, and I've been meaning to make my own, so this has given me a kick up the bum.

Transferring snacks from one plastic bag to another was not a great move, but other than that I enjoyed it. Nothing groundbreaking, but all very pretty to look at and some good ideas in there.

Not being Meghan, I don't think you are qualified to make this statement. But I expect she's very pleased with those ratings. Who wouldn't be?

AtIusvue · 06/03/2025 09:49

I’ve seen the whole series.

It’s an informercial for As ever products. Every recipe she shares has been designed around an As ever product. For example, episode 8, she makes shortbread with edible flowers. The As ever shortbread mix and edible flowers are now on her website. But it stretches to every recipe she shares, so expect to see more products soon on her website that she was demonstrating on the show.

It’s also why there aren’t many instructions. For example, she make dried oranges to garnish cocktails. She says use a dehydrator (but gives no instructions) or use an oven on low and slow (but doesn’t actually give you a temp or that it will prob need 10/12 hrs) The reason is thus, this will be a As ever product for sale. She has no reason to actually show you how to make them when she wants you to buy her products.

So it isn’t actually a cooking/lifestyle show, its a very beautiful QVC sales pitch.

So unless you live in the US, where you’ll be able to purchase the As Ever goods and you’re the type of person that would buy packet mix shortbread, then I would give it it a miss.

Beowulfa · 06/03/2025 10:03

I didn't even know there was such a thing as shortbread packet mix.

I don't have Netflix, but wondering if anyone wants to pay my bloke to film him pickling his home-grown beetroot in his mid-terrace kitchen, whilst wearing a beer festival t-shirt and shouting at the football on the radio?

I've not watched it beyond the bath salts, but do you mean it's a cooking show without sufficient instructions/quantities etc for what she's making for you to be able to make any of it? (I assume for some things like a pasta dish PPs have mentioned, you can wing it with quantities, but less so for baking).

BonkersBaddies · 06/03/2025 08:55

Ok!! So which tips did you find so valuable and useful to you?

I liked all of it it's just my opinion you have the option to turn it off if you don't like it 😆

Gg72 · 06/03/2025 14:25

All of it p.s there's an off button if you don't like it 😆

lemontova · 06/03/2025 14:28

So far I've just watched the first episode and liked it. It's interesting to see the actual programme after reading some of the press hate (surprise surprise - negative press, totally unbiased critical opinion and not at all retaliation for being sued). Eg Daily Mail up in arms that it's not filmed in her own house, breaking it like exclusive news they have winnowed out and they're catching her in a lie, when it's one of the first things she says in the show.

Anyway. I might make that pasta, looked nice, although it will be a solo dinner as everyone else in my house hates kale and chard and derides them as animal food. The other stuff - well maybe I am just a tradwife at heart (and not after all a ruthless legal exec) - but it's not out of step with my own life and aspirations. When we have guests we make them a little bedside hamper with snacks and drinks, haven't done bespoke bath salts but maybe I will give that a go as it looked quick and piss easy and the shop ones smell of nothing and cost too much. I don't see why that is such a crazy thing to do, the programme just seemed to be ideas to make things look pretty, and what's wrong with that? The candle making though I can't get on board, tried it during the long winter months of lockdown and all mine tunnelled, had wonky wicks, didn't burn properly and looked crap. Probably need to get some bees. Will watch the rest of the series for sure, I hear there is some day drinking in later eps and that very much speaks to my interests. I imagine it will look prettier than my standard so will hopefully provide ideas for ways to turn getting drunk in the garden into a beautifully curated moment of joy.

JoyousGreyOrca · 06/03/2025 15:16

@atlusvue It is a lifestyle show. If it was a cooking show it would be presented by a cook. Have you never seen any of these before? This is what they do. They are selling an aspirational lifestyle.

W0tnow · 06/03/2025 15:24

The spaghetti dish I will cook for sure. Seems very convenient. I read a review criticising that the recipe wasn’t very original….but it IS spaghetti, after all.

It does comes across as very contrived. She cooks in very lovely but impractical outfits. The show is very American. She is very American. You know…uses words like ‘joyful’ and ‘healing’.

I did gasp when she used pink Himalayan salt in her bath salts! I’ll probably watch the rest of the shows.

I don’t really get the hate on her. I bet they’re all creaming their pants in their collective hatred over on the Royal Family section.

dayswithaY · 06/03/2025 16:01

I think Netflix are using Meghan, somewhat. They’re locked into this mega bucks deal but so far the only show that was popular was when they dished the dirt on the Royals.

So, now H&M have allegedly moved on from victim mode, they’re not minded to trash their family anymore so we’re left with dull content about polo and Invictus, which no one cares about.

I think someone very clever at Netflix has decided the best way forward is to put Meghan in a show designed to get social media worked up, take the piss on an industrial scale and therefore get lots of people watching to see what all the fuss is about.

They know they can’t make a credible show with Meghan that people actually want to watch because - what would that be? What does she stand for? And they’ve still got a few years left on their contract.

So instead they purposefully show her making ice cubes and putting seeds in party bags and it gets the whole world interested - I’ve never seen so much attention given to a twee little cookery show.

Except Meghan is not in on the joke.

Don't be silly. Plenty of people are enjoying it, even if you aren't. Netflix will be delighted with the rating and the return on their investment.

Carouselfish · 06/03/2025 16:29

I don't at all hate her. I like their love story, loved the wedding etc.
I have an American relative very like her. Wafts about in simple dresses and very into getting back to nature, heirloom veg etc but in the way only a rich person can. There are worse ways to be as a rich person but it's very much playing a role.

The Netflix thing is just the wrong choice. None of it seems to be things she's very comfortable doing or good at. No original ideas. Also a shame the products tied in aren't actually available. I'd sat whoever is advising her, needs firing.

Leavesandacorns · 06/03/2025 16:33

I don't have strong feelings either way about Meghan. Watched the first episode last night and loved it though.

I'd take it with a pinch of salt but it was great relaxing mindless tv after a stressful day 🤷‍♀️.

I agree here, it's so clear that netflix's angle is rage bait and I really think Harry and meghan aren't ballsy enough to really stand against their past 🥺

No, not being silly at all.

It’s just an observation that many others have also made, that Netflix might have an agenda here.

I also didn’t say anything about whether I was enjoying it or not.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 06/03/2025 18:32

Okay mums, so I've finished it

I liked it 😭, but I wouldn't have watched it if she wasn't who she is - cooking shows interest me, but lifestyle/crafty shows not so much (can't watch kirsty allsops show)

But once I started watching it, I really enjoyed it. Would love some more famous interesting celebrities on the next season, mindy was the best one (I love her)

Netflix's 'agenda' is eyeballs. They are achieving that in spades and no, not because all the viewers across multiple countries are in on 'a joke' against Meghan. What a nasty premise.

Many people on line seem to be enjoying it. Of course there's a cohort of rage watchers. God knows why people torture themselves like that, but Netflix and Meghan thank them for their attention. 😂

Idabelle · 06/03/2025 18:57

I watched the first episode and I liked it well enough.

I do keep bees and chickens and grow my own cut flowers so I am very much the target audience.

I'll watch the rest of it and will probably try the pasta dish. I might even try candle making with my beeswax, I've never tried it before.

TwoRobins · 06/03/2025 18:58

No opinion about her one way or the other. Just not interested. Although, just in general, I don't see what's wrong with correcting someone about your name.

Yes, it's very like Marie Antoinette and her ladies playing at being milk maids at the Hameau de la Reine. Carrying around fresh milk in gold plated churns and decorating the cows with silk ribbons.
