AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

I don't think many young people know that we had to pay America back for their support in WW2. $3.75 billion that was only finally paid off in 2006.

Plenty more coming up behind him, unfortunately.

...or horrifyingly if he drops off before the end of this tenure... its Vance. (Shudder)

By the way first moves have been started to go for 3rd term.

I know. I paid towards that for 34 years of my working life. I wasn’t even born when it ended.

Funnily enough, I just spoke to an American friend who is in the process of applying to get her British passport back (she was born in the UK and left when she was 16, her parents are American). She now has three children and is applying for British passports for them, too "just in case". She said even aside from the havoc Trump is causing internationally, not an hour goes by without another news alert telling her he's done something domestically that is horrific, or illegal, or both.

I have a number of friends trying to get out of the USA at the moment, asking me how I received UK citizenship. Substack has a number of independent business making decent money on advising Americans how to emigrate to Mexico, Canada, Belize, etc.

Neither was I! It was agreed in 1946.

That's because many Americans can't see beyond their own borders. When I lived there the big surprise was finding out how few own passports. We may think we see lots of American tourists here but in fact they don't all travel that much, even within their own country.

About 48 percent of Americans have passports, so not the majority, but not a tiny amount.

Shitmonger · 04/03/2025 13:43

It’s not surprising. After Zelenskyy directly threatened the US twice during the meeting, which immediately turned the tone and got him shut down by Trump and Vance, I was expecting this.

Zelenskyy’s threats seem to have made a lot of Americans change their minds about supporting him as well.

Are you deliberately lying and spreading misinformation or did you make a big mistake?

Assuming most people here are British , I just can’t get over the self righteousness I’ve read on mn re the British army !!
I am one of your former colonies . The British empire like the US, like Russia has been a war-mongering nation. One of the key reasons why Palestine is in the state it is now; look what Britain did originally there , literally gifting it away!
Look at how many countries in Africa have been messed up by British colonialism. I know many people are very well meaning on these threads but the comments of pride about wars fought by Britain when often your country was also an aggressor !!!
Europe has been weakened by this way and particularly the disaster of Brexit , I genuinely wish the uk could just join again to demonstrate a stronger and united Europe.

justasking111 · 04/03/2025 14:02

We're going to have to pull our socks up now in Europe and work together on our own plan excluding the money that previously came from the USA.

It’s been obvious that all Trump’s moves have been to further the interests of Russia for years.

The baffler is why the American electorate didn’t see it.

Edited

Take a look at the people here who say, Actually, Reform has some valid points, and you'll see the first seedlings of how it happens. Well, second seedlings. Brexit, I guess was the first.

That said, it's an absolute disgrace and I hope Europe can hold together. It would take very few Republican congress members in the US to put a stop to the Trump agenda. What a shame they have no spines.

Oh, and Trump and Vance are equal cunts.

You make a lot of mind-reading assumptions. Trump capitulated… really?

Does any world leader, other than Mr Z, really want THEIR own troops on the ground in Ukraine.

I will mind read it for you … NO. Not one European country wants their citizens dead in Ukraine.

Yes, he's capitulated. He's giving Putin what Putin wants. It's not a 'peace' deal (as the last thing it will lead to is peace) it's a 'surrender' deal.

European leaders know their own countries will end up fighting Putin if this surrender deal happens. It's looking almost inevitable now, unfortunately.

You might not be aware that the US under Obama in 2013 effectively ended the Budapest Memorandum when it sanctioned Belarus and when confronted declared that the BM was not legally binding.

Don't suggest it's somehow null and void because that's not the case at all. The Belarus complaints about sanctions did expose the power dynamic when it was drawn up at the time, and how it was exploited. Semantics between 'assurances' vs 'guarantees' but the 'spirit' of that agreement was known, understood, and has been upheld in the interests of diplomatic relations.

When Russia breached the memorandum, the other three stepped in with sanctions citing it directly. The US dancing around the wording when it suits them does not detract from the significant weight of the original agreement.

He doesn't care about losing men in war

I listened to a fascinating documentary on BBC Sounds this morning (Assignment: Russia’s new war elite) about the large sums of money given to men who sign up for Russia’s ‘special operation’ in Ukraine and their families in the event of their death. It’s had a number of interesting unintended consequences but the main point for this discussion is that they have lots of money for recruitment of replacement soldiers.

Vance also dismissed Starmer's and Macron's efforts as " peacekeeping assistance from "some random country that hasn't fought a war in 30 or 40 years". Although he later tried to deny he didn't mean these countries.

This has sparked some passionate responses from London. Really disrepectful of countries whose soldiers fought and died alongside the US in wars they started.

Really apprehensive about where all this is headed.

JD Vance trashes Starmer and Macron’s Ukraine peacekeeping plan – POLITICO

He absolutely meant it.

But like the rest of the MAGA leadership he is inept and ignorant. So he genuinely was not aware of European support during the US’s “War Against Terror”.

I've not seen anyone speaking proudly about the British Empire, or British troops colonising other countries.

But I agree about Brexit.

Also what is the alternative , have an all out war with Russia ? Both putin and trump want Europe weakened and it’s working so he isn’t going to engage with European leaders , what are pp suggestions of what they can do to deescalate and get an agreement?

lifeonmars100 · 04/03/2025 14:06

J D Vance worries me more than Trump if such a thing is possible. He is what we will get when/if Trump does not complete his full term in office. Given that Trump is elderly, clearly does not look after himself and appears to have some cognitive issues there is a possibility that he will not see out the four years. If this is the case Vance will take over, decades younger and in my opinion even more dangerous. His recent remarks about the "random country" who has not fought in a war for 30=40 years are not just ignorant and insulting but also show what a truly nasty individual he is

Seriously, I don’t think agreement is possible. The only thing Putin will accept is capitulation and that’s not going to happen.

It's shit for Ukraine but Europe/Nato have been taking the piss regarding defence spending for decades. We prefer to pump money into welfare.

Europe should have seen this coming. Trump was moaning about it during his first term. I mean look at Trudeau, talking all supportively whilst simultaneously running down defence spending to 1.4% GDP. It's pitiful. Time for others to step up and stop telling the US what they should spend their taxpayers money on whilst refusing to do the same.

You do know that 70% of foreign aid to Ukraine goes straight back into the US economy, right? We ship them old arms and military equipment that we were going to pay to destroy and then build replacements. That's what makes up the majority of the spend.

Magic3forvever · 04/03/2025 14:07

@JazzyJelly I have on numerous threads on here , almost as though your troops are something to be revered, whereas in many many other countries your army was the invading force . “ Divide and conquer “ …

Not sure what you mean? The European leaders literally are meeting to work out how to de-escalate this without a) war with Russia and b) capitulating to Russia so that we end up with them absorbing more Europea countries, with or without a fight. If there was an obvious silver bullet, we'd know about it.

Trump stands with Putin, that much is clear.
