AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

Ukraine war latest: US pauses military aid to Ukraine as EU chief says Europe is 'ready to step up'

Meanwhile, Russia says Donald Trump's move is "the best contribution to the cause of peace".

I don’t think they’re on Putin’s payroll.

No, you're right. They're not exactly dynamic in countering the rise of Trump's brand of politics though.

The Americans & passports comparison is always pathetic.
Americans can ski, lie on a beach and everything in between with a driving lisc for ID. Why ski in Alps when you have Rockies closer & cheaper. Why go to Riviera when you have much better & cleaner beaches on both coasts.

It’s simple economics.

Do majority of Brits /Europeans travel in Europe for the cultural experiences? They have passports because they need one to leave!!.

It’s just some silly snobbish thing to say “even my grandparents have passport, most Americans don’t!” That’s because your grandparents need/needed a passport to go to Malaga …. American grandparents don’t need one for Florida!

You’ve never left the US, have you? Never seen a building over 200 years old.

And the Democrats don't seem to have started looking for a new, intelligent, younger leader yet

Typically there won't be visibility on that until we start heading towards a primary. Josh Shapiro, Gretchen Whitmer and Pete Buttigieg are clearly starting to make exploratory moves, but it will be slow right now. And Gavin Newsom, but I'm not including him because I think he's permanently thinking about it.

Adding: Mark Cuban has started making some noise about dipping his toe in.

What I saw was Trump & Co pursuing a negotiated solution. Both sides feeling like the got something and ending a costly war.
Looked like press conference was supposed to signal this.

Mr Z … didn’t want a negotiable and let that be known.

So, now it’s all about war - weapons spending, troops, death and in the end - boarders similar to whatever Trump negotiation would have yielded with added cost of a military boarder zone costing billions a year to defend.

thanks Zelensky….

The more I think about it - he is a little fool in heels, dancing EU & UK into a costly war.

Did you see that on the propaganda channel? Because the rest of the world saw a senile old man being controlled by Putin and a VP with an IQ that’s invisible.
The UK is far from perfect but we are still prepared to stand up to aggressors like Putin, just like we did in 1939 with Hitler, whilst the US sat back and watched for 2 years. The US is now generally regarded as a rogue nation, I don’t know where you think that leaves them in the long term.

European leaders realise that if they don't support Ukraine then they are likely to need their own troops on the ground in there own country and that their citizens will be dead in their own country.

Yep. Better the frontline is in Ukraine than Calais.

Utterly baffling how anyone non-American (or Russian) could possibly think that Trump is doing the right thing. Maybe it'll finally dawn on them when it's their sons being conscripted in 5 years time.

I am sorry but I have never in my 50 pus years on this earth read so much crap and seen so many hysterical posts as on this thread. its bloody ridiculous.where on earth are you getting your bizarre ideas from?
President Trump is posturing and making a very valid point to the world,us included, cannot you see that?He is taking a stand and a valid one at that that America is not the saviour of the world especially financially. Why do you all expect that country to finance everything? America owes no country anything, and why should the President and citizens of America be subject to such disrespect? Aid has temporarily been suspended. This is to force the hand of the little man running round the world with his hands out in his action man clothes demanding every other country finance his every whim whilst billions of pounds has gone "missing". Nobody, not one single country,us,France, anyone can go into this with alleged peacekeepers or boots on the ground without America no one, you should remember that.No American backing No dice and no one can move and no peace. Whilst our Pm is rallying leaders of nations no one has the money.weapons or troops to move an inch without America. Trump is forcing the hand of Zalensky to negociate. As for being a russian plant well ffs grow up.This war will be stopped round a table not on the battlefield as zalensky would like glorified by dead soldiers on the ground. I would step back, calm down and have a chill about which scenario would play out the best for everyone.

Hi Donny

I don't want a war with you about this. I'm well aware that Americans have a whole continent to travel in - we made the most of it when we lived there. Practically no one we worked with had a passport. Who's being snobbish?? It has nothing to do with having or not having a passport.
Sorry for derailing OP!

The USA is $36trillion in debt. A nation of 300million has been funding European defence (600million people) for too long. Time the European's paid for their own defence and fund Ukraine too.
I don't see why the USA has to pay for everything; they are going bust. Will the EU step up and fund Ukraine's defence in place of the USA or will they simply bitch at the USA (like this thread is)?
Time for European's to step up.

Notonthestairs · 04/03/2025 14:30

The US is allied to Russia now. Trump gave every indication of this prior to his election. We shouldn't have been surprised - I suppose we were hoping that he would atleast respect the previous agreements and commitments the US made. Or that Trump might be persuaded to see some value in the Western alliance.

Peace in Europe is now longer of interest to the US and nothing they agree to is of any value.

I have no doubt Trump/Vance would parcel us up and hand us to Putin if they thought it would please him and thereby lever Russia away from their alliance with China.

We do travel to Europe for cultural experiences yes, you should try it sometime.
Greece is the cradle of western civilisation, the Roman Empire ruled much of Europe, Western Asia and North Africa. The culture, traditions, arts, and architecture are what broadens people’s minds and prevents them from becoming small minded and insular. I don’t think there’s much culture to be had at a theme park in Florida.

I don't think many young people know that we had to pay America back for their support in WW2. $3.75 billion that was only finally paid off in 2006.

Yep - they think they did it from the goodness of the heart.

Unless they are American in which case they think they won WWII single handedly.

Petuniaspetal · 04/03/2025 14:31

Your name is appropriate because no one else appears to have heard these threats. Please do show the quotes and facts .Are these the new maga/russia fabricated talking points that never get researched?

So far, trump et al. have lied about the amount of investment that has been given to the Ukraine by the USA nearly doubling the amount to 350bn dollars.
He said that Zelensky hadn't thanked the US when he has done so publicly by word and in writing numerous times.

They also claimed Zelensky was campaigning for Biden when he went to a munitions factory...to THANK ..the workers for their help. He met with Biden and Harris AND later that day met with trump, who did his usual and praised him at the time, and then a few days later criticised him for meeting Biden and Harris.

We will wait patiently for your quotes and facts.....

No.

Florida is still in the USA. There is a different experience in going to visit a foreign nation.

I am sure Australians have a high proportion of passport ownership and spend time visiting foreign nations despite living on a diverse continent of their own.

That is true but ime in some cases it was like visiting a different country depending on which state you were in! Texas for example lol

100% agree @Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr This is all very disturbing isn't it?!

YourHappyJadeEagle · 04/03/2025 14:37

Just when you thought Trump couldn’t sink any lower he does.
We'll cut off military support, well we might not as long as you hand over your country’s resources.
Mybetting is he’ll do the same with all overseas aid. Reinstate it to countries with resources he can plunder. He’s learnt from Imperialism I suppose. Still makes him scum.

You’ve never left the US, have you? Never seen a building over 200 years old.

Sitting here w a view of a shitty council estate in London. In a building from 1895 sorry not old enough for you and there’s still an outdoor toilet …

Whilst you can’t even think outside your Little Britain life.

One doesn’t need to travel with a passport if live in USA to have a holiday … just look at a map of the USA and u can draw the conclusions presented in my post.

Passport does not equate to some sort of superiority and
Im mindful of the number of people in UK who arrive & live in UK don’t have a British passport ….
