Angela Rayner’s glottal stops are infuriating

AIBU to be so irritated by the deputy PM’s lazy speech? I was listening to her being interviewed this morning and I was distracted by her Bri-ish/righ-/wai-ed. I googled her and apparently when asking a question about the lockdown parties she said ‘Was you there or not?’
Why does it anger me so much? It is not her accent. I am northern but I don’t drop my t’s and I know when to use was and were.
Her lazy speech distracts from the content. I have my theories but I would love to hear other people’s opinions.

Parliament should be more reflective of the population not less - so more working class and none university educated politicians and fewer eton and oxbridge

👏

SilkSquare · 04/03/2025 14:50

She has changed her natural accent to fit in. The question is...who does she want to fit in with.

I don't disagree with that, but listening to her is like listening to a sketch from Monty Python / The Two Ronnies / The Fast Show / Little Britain - take your pick depending on your age.

Working class doesn't automatically mean speaking like an uneducated oik and wearing it like a badge of honour.

oldwhyno · 04/03/2025 14:46

It doesn't really bother me, I wasn't going to vote for her anyway.

I don't think it's her "accent" or "dialect" as others have suggested. She knows it's poor English as do most people that speak that way. It's a choice in her case, and one she's welcome to make.

"She is aware that her English is not proper, as are most people who speak in that manner."

Fixed your poor English for you there, love. You're welcome.

NewMarmiteJar · 04/03/2025 15:09

Classism at its worst finest.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 04/03/2025 15:11

It angers you because you are a snob, perhaps.

WutheringShites86 · 04/03/2025 15:11

Hmm, 'uneducated oiks' and 'trying to fit in'...I wonder if there is some projection of internalised prejudice going on in this thread. ..

MayaPinion · 04/03/2025 15:14

With all that’s going on in the world you choose to focus on someone’s accent being irritating to you. Get over yourself.

ScupperedbytheSea · 04/03/2025 15:21

Women, especially those in positions of power/authority, get some much more grief over the way they speak than men. It's utterly depressing.

Posh boys, like Sunak, Osborne and Cameron used to try and 'talk down' to sound like they were nice normal down-to-earth blokes. It was fake and patronising, yet they were rarely pulled up for it in the same way.

Rayner just talks like herself and she's vilified (and she's not the only one).

Have a word with yourself honestly. You sound like an unbearable snob

Actually, that's incorrect. Just saying.

Well, it depends on the context. Are you referring to the language she uses? Or how she uses it?

I was highlighting that the previous poster said of AR "She knows it's poor English as do most people that speak that way" which itself was a poorly constructed sentence. Ironic, innit.

I'm not keen on her voice but Rachel Reeves's voice annoys me even more!

This is just snobbish nonsense. I’ve got two degrees and she’s no less intelligent than I am. And she’s a lot more quick thinking. It’s not necessary to have a piece of paper to certify intelligence. If you doubt what I’m saying listen to her interview on the Leaders podcast. It will be a revelation to you.

Your two degrees may not render you more intelligent than Angela Raynor-you are of course in a position to judge the worth of your own education and, if you value it as of being little worth, then I am certainly happy to agree with you.

However, my degrees certainly do render me much more intelligent than Angela Raynor.

If obtaining a degree renders you no more intelligent than someone who boasts of her total lack of education-and demonstrates it at every turn-then maybe you should ask for your money back.

Does Angela Raynor have some sort of ability to make a little go a long way? Indeed she may have-it used to be called a low wit- and I imagine she has that-and cunning- in spades.

I have listened to her many times-she is not intelligent by my lights but again, I accept she may be by yours.

She is loud, she is mouthy and she is full of self confidence. These gaudy colours do sometimes hoodwink those who lack confidence in their own intelligence and and education.-even those who boast of two degrees of some sort.

Were your two degrees in being painfully smug and misguided, pompous self-importance? I expect they asked you to come back and teach.

Degrees do not make people more intelligent. They make people more educated. Intelligence is innate.

She is quick-witted and more than holds her own when she stands in for the PM during PMQs.

Your distaste and disdain is oozing out of you and it's not a good look.

If you are so much more intelligent why are you not deputy prime minister?

SilkSquare · 04/03/2025 17:49

Is the job of deputy PM, the only job that is an indicator of intelligence?
What about brain surgeons? What about barristers? What about astronauts?

Are they all somehow less than intelligent than Angela Raynor because they are not Deputy PM?

Well, I never! But I'm prepared to bow to your superior reasoning. You're too clever for me.

Are you a brain surgeon? I very much doubt it.
If you'd achieved anything of note you wouldn't be wasting time arguing on Mumsnet.

Sorry to sound harsh but actions speak louder than words you claimed to be more intelligent than her and I say this as someone who isn't politically a fan and I'd never vote labour but the fact she's gone from 16 and pregnant to deputy prime minister is proof she must be intelligent. Most likely a lot more intelligent than yourself

A degree doesn’t render you intelligent. If only. It’s a piece of paper that indicates a level of education. That’s all. Rayner is as intelligent as I am, the difference is that she hasn’t got two bits of paper. There are many, many highly intelligent people who haven’t got degrees.

Beetlebumz · 04/03/2025 18:17

The op sounds a typical “Little Englander”. Both snobbish and small minded in equal measures.

Nanny0gg · 04/03/2025 18:19

BallerinaRadio · 04/03/2025 08:52

What's your theory?

I don't think she sounds be changing how she speaks, that's just something natural. If she put a 'posh' voice she'd be crucified for being fake.

Judge her on actions not how she speaks

Correct English doesn't have to be posh

It's not the accent.

You can be East London, South London or wherever and still speak properly.
