Angela Rayner’s glottal stops are infuriating

AIBU to be so irritated by the deputy PM’s lazy speech? I was listening to her being interviewed this morning and I was distracted by her Bri-ish/righ-/wai-ed. I googled her and apparently when asking a question about the lockdown parties she said ‘Was you there or not?’
Why does it anger me so much? It is not her accent. I am northern but I don’t drop my t’s and I know when to use was and were.
Her lazy speech distracts from the content. I have my theories but I would love to hear other people’s opinions.

There is NO way on earth she will ever make PM with the way she speaks. She will not be allowed to represent Britain on the global stage, liaising with other heads of state when she speaks like that.

And I say that as someone who admires how she has forged her own path to success. The way she speaks is a glass ceiling she will not smash unless she learns to speak a little less coarsely. Doesn't mean she has to go full blown Rees-Mogg, but there is a happy middle ground where words are pronounced properly.

She represented the UK in Ethiopia last week, twice meeting their Prime Minister for official discussions. King Charles seems not to have the same disdain for her as you do. Strange.

Limit her? She is the deputy prime minister of the UK. I would love to know what jobs and achievements many people on this thread have clocked up in their lives.

Enough of that typing up essays online about "glottal stops" and how life is over if you reproduce before 30 is enough of an achievement. Big Ange could never come close to this 💪🏻

Angela vs Jacob?
For me it's Angela, I cannot abide Rees Mogg & his awful condescending manner 😖
I like Angela Rayner, I like her 'roughness', but I also think it will limit her (of course I could be completely wrong).

It's not either/or.

One badly speaking fucker doesn't exonerate all others. Rather, it should shine a light on all those who ham up their accents and awful speaking tone.

Once recognised, the next question should be: why are they doing this, acting, putting on this awfulness? Why do they feel that certain aspects of themselves have to be exaggerated , even caricatured?

Do they think that their chosen persona-posh upper class twit or daughter of the slums might not quite reach those sitting at the back?

It's always interesting to ask why someone strikes a false note

Of course, there will be those so blinded by love for a posh upper class twit or a daughter of the slums that they won't do this or suffer anyone else to do it-they will always jump to their defence.

That's fine-it's amusing to see the defences brought out but most people pause and wonder why they do this and there is always a why.

Personally, if someone hams it up to the extent that are at worse, renders them practically unintelligible and at best, an assault on the ears-they should -at the very least-be laughed at.

BIossomtoes · 04/03/2025 12:47

I thought I was a snob but I’m a complete amateur compared with some of the posters on this thread. If I’d accomplished half of what Rayner has I’d die happy.

RobertaFirmino · 04/03/2025 12:47

Funny how AR's accent is slated but you rarely hear anything negative about the way Lindsay Boyle speaks...

SilkSquare · 04/03/2025 12:52

@RobertaFirmino That's because Lindsay Hoyle speaks naturally in his northern accent. He doesn't turn himself into a comic turn, which rather proves the point that AG exaggerates, so much a deaf man couldn't miss it.

A poster asked this pages back, maybe he is seen as a "charming character" not a scummy uneducated oik who can't speak correctly and has achieved nothing with her life.

What are your achievements that they allow you to be so dismissive of Rayner’s? I’ll bet hers dwarf yours.

Coffeeishot · 04/03/2025 12:55

Also Lindsay Hoyle was privately educated so maybe an acceptable "northener"

Runnersandtoms · 04/03/2025 12:55

Having a northern accent does not excuse misusing grammar eg saying 'we was there'. That just indicates a lack of education or a disregard for it. Accents are one thing and I don't think people should need to change their accent for their job, but using correct English is something I'd expect from an MP let alone the deputy PM.

Even if you've grown up hearing and saying 'aint', if you are an educated person you know that correct English is 'isn't' or 'is not'.

When speaking in public, and representing your party/government/country you should use correct English. What you say in your own home/ with family and friends is up to you.

I wasn't being dismissive at all I was replying to another poster. About how some people view Angela Rayner I absolutely don't view her like that.

SuddenFrisson · 04/03/2025 12:58

ThatOtherAustenSister · 04/03/2025 09:09

I don't think she has worked hard at all.

She has a 'voice' which is what most politicians have- the gift of the gab that goes down well .

She worked her way up using her 'gift of the gab' through unions.
She's like an over promoted shop steward.

Are you confusing being a trade union rep with being on holiday?

Why would you expect a politician to codeswitch? And why would you expect any particular standard of education from someone whose job doesn’t require a specific degree or other qualification, or for her to communicate in any specific way other than comprehensible?

I mean, if you genuinely can’t understand what she means when she says ‘If you was to be on the Select Committee for Whatsit’, I think that says more about you than her, but I feel sure it’s just performative language snobbery from the type of person who thinks they ‘don't have an accent’.

Arraminta · 04/03/2025 13:18

I couldn't care less about her accent (I don't speak with RP either) but her poor spoken grammar really makes me wince. It's also a concern that she has no formal education after she left school at 16. The vast majority of politicians she will liaise with (both home and foreign) will be educated to degree level, at least. This is bound to put her at a huge disadvantage.

I suspect she's actually given little in the way of 'real' political hobnobbing/dialogue and it just used as window dressing.

teledays · 04/03/2025 13:20

Does anyone think she’d actually say “was you there” at a meeting ? Of course she wouldn’t . She puts (some) of it on for the masses.

This is just snobbish nonsense. I’ve got two degrees and she’s no less intelligent than I am. And she’s a lot more quick thinking. It’s not necessary to have a piece of paper to certify intelligence. If you doubt what I’m saying listen to her interview on the Leaders podcast. It will be a revelation to you.

Parliament should be more reflective of the population not less - so more working class and none university educated politicians and fewer eton and oxbridge

God what a ridiculous essay.

I don't mind either Rayner's or Rees moggs accents so far the issue most seem to have is being jealous of moggs wealth or perceived wealth "I can't stand how posh he sounds" and with Rayner people constantly bring up her being a young mum and leaving school etc me thinks they're jealous a young mum did so well for herself 😉

Honestly I actually quite enjoy listening to both of them speak, but the hypocrisy is noted if I was to start a thread saying I can't stand Indian or Jamaican accents you'd all jump down my throat to call me racist but it's fine to do it to your own people who speak slightly differently?

Porcelainpig · 04/03/2025 14:43

YANBU, YBAD

oldwhyno · 04/03/2025 14:46

It doesn't really bother me, I wasn't going to vote for her anyway.

I don't think it's her "accent" or "dialect" as others have suggested. She knows it's poor English as do most people that speak that way. It's a choice in her case, and one she's welcome to make.

wherearemypastnames · 04/03/2025 14:46

Oh change how you speak to fit in, do dear
