To be jealous of everyone getting slim in weight loss jabs while I get fatter !

Sundayslump · 02/03/2025 08:18

Okay - lighthearted ? Maybe.

I’ve been lucky to grow up and be a size 10 . Had a baby at 27. Lost all the weight but my body changed. Baby 2 , again gained 4 stone but I’ve always kept the last stone. I am now 12/14 uk.

I work full time and have two children . I eat healthy for the most part and walk and exercise. When I am super strict which feels so much harder at 40 I am a size 12 but unlike in my 30s it seems so much harder to lose weight now . I feel crap in my clothes and I wish and dream of being a size 10. Call me pathetic !

My brother and his wife , twos sisters and their husbands , work colleagues and a few of my good friends who were never obese but had a few stone to lose are all taking weight loss jabs. They have all lost around 2/3/4 stone and are all now looking fab . All the women are now in size 8 jeans and I am jealous. I sound pathetic . None of these ladies were any bigger than a 14/16 to start with.

I totally understand these jabs are so life changing for so many people who need them but it seems in my life everyone has taken them and gone from a 14/16 to a size 8/6 size Uk and I can’t help but feel like if I just bloody jump on the bandwagon I will feel good, feel happy and be slim.

Now everyone around me is so slim I feel ever more aware of my size .

I want to state I exercise and do eat a healthy diet . I have just found after two babies and getting older unless I basically stick to 1200 calories a day I can’t maintain a size 12.
Ahhhhhh. Sorry for sounding so so so vain.

I'm sorry this is rubbish. Attached is a photo of me when I was 14 stone. I don't 'look' huge but the difference between working out at 14 stone and 12 stone is incredible. I used to get a pain in my knee and my belly obstructed many of the moves. I had sore joints after working out - elbow and shoulder mostly. Yes, I'm not going to pretend I don't look better and I am happy with that but the physical effort of carrying around several extra stones is bloody horrible.

Once again, this is your personal experience from a single (yours) perspective. If you want to tell everyone that your sole purpose was to make it easier to do your exercises and you had absolutely zero intentions to lose weight to look better in your clothes then you are free to do that.

But it doesn't in any way make any argument that lots and lots and lots of people are using it to lose weight to look better in shorts, not to lower their cholesterol

You don’t have to fib about anything to get jab privately if overweight. They’ll want data, bloods, do a full health assessment & look at whether menopausal or post menopausal etc & make a decision accordingly. More often than not, if borderline, they’ll prescribe.

Oh I thought your bmi had to be 30 even privately? Hadn’t realised the limit had been lowered. But regardless , whatever the limit is even if that’s bmi of 26 there will be some people just under the limit who fib and slip through the net. But hopefully only a small number and not people well under the limit.

Youreboringme · 02/03/2025 14:21

Ok, I will reword what I said to make it clearer.

You don't have to make it clearer, I know what you meant.

I guess its possible for someone with a bmi of 28 or 29 to fib about their stats and in their photo their bmi may look 30 so then they get it. But I’d suspect those numbers are small and will only work at a certain bmi.

Of the 8 people I know on it, 6 have done exactly this.

Look, I'm not against it at all - in fact, I'm very close to doing it myself. But I am weary of this narrative that everyone is only doing it for health. I'm certainly not - my primary and overriding goal is to be thin for summer before menopause takes over entirely and I lose whatever youth I have left.

Edited

Have to say I’m surprised you know so many people on it. Were they overweight but just not “overweight enough “ to qualify for it without lying about their stats? I don’t know anyone on it for sure, though I suspect someone at work is on it. Oh actually someone else I know is on it her but her bmi is like 50, she’s also not losing weight…..🤷‍♀️

It’s not lowered but it seems a 360 degree view with bloods etc & checks poss greyer area.

I agree. I've been weight training 3 x per week for 2 years before starting MJ. I lost maybe a stone through exercise but that stalled. I couldn't shift the huge meno belly I had.

The final straw for me was struggling to lace up my trainers because the belly was like being pregnant. I've continued to weight train throughout although even trying to keep proteins up I am having to build up on weights again. I haven't lost muscle to the extent I'm back to where I started 2 years ago but I've had to reduce my lifts by a couple of Kgs.

'm stopping MJ at the end of the month and plan build back up again but this time from a place where my stomach isn't a hinderance to technique. The best part of all this for me is not clothes fitting or how I look in a mirror, I do appreciate those things but they're secondary to that feeling of moving through space with ease, walking up stairs with minimum effort etc.

Don’t feel jealous.

Weight-loss jabs are not good for your health. You also lose a lot of lean mass including muscle and bone.

Twiglets1 · 02/03/2025 15:27

Finallydoingit24 · 02/03/2025 14:46

Theres so much misinformation on here. I am on them. I was 15 kilos (2.5 stone) overweight which for me was obese (BMI 30.1 and I am 5’7”). Obese doesn’t look like my 600lb life. Most people who are about a size 16 will be obese. I was wearing size 12-14 but I weighed close to 14 stone.

Nobody gets them on the NHS unless it’s for diabetes. The NHS does not prescribe for weight loss although they will soon. Nobody taking these jabs is draining the NHS of funds. Also nobody who takes them has the option of going to their GP as they won’t prescribe them.

Everyone who buys them through a registered pharmacy is prescribed them. Pharmacies can prescribe medication.

If you want to try them OP, go ahead. They have been around for about 20 years in various forms - it’s not a brand new thing. Most people don’t have debilitating side effects.

I eat around 1800 cals a day. It does not get rid of all food noise for me but it stops me binge eating which was my sole issue stopping me losing weight before.

there’s a former GP on YouTube called Emma Anders who takes WLIs and she’s done some great videos about it all and is very informed.

Agree with some of this - for example I am in the obese category at size 16 and could only get weight loss injections from private pharmacies as wasn't obese enough to get them via the NHS.

But you still think OP should take them even though she has said she suffered from anorexia in the past? That is a reason not to take them.

Weepixie · 02/03/2025 15:34

notanormalday · 02/03/2025 14:58

Honestly I'm on the jabs I'm on 7.5mg it's cut out some of the food noise but it's not as great as most people make out. I've lost 1st 7lbs and I've been on it since beginning of December. I just don't see how some people see such big results in such little time.

You seem to be the perfect size. I really wouldn't put so much pressure on yourself. I think if you started the jabs it's just another pressure of trying to keep up with the others.

Unfortunately we will never be happy with ourselves.

I’m a slow loser also in that I haven’t had the 2/3 pound weight loss weekly that some people have. I’m losing about a 400gms per week and for the most part I’m happy though I did have a bit of a rant last week because I know I’m doing everything I can to help myself yet it’s still a slog. But I truly believe that the longer this takes me the healthier it is for me and the less likely I’ll regain my weight when at target. I started in mid August and thought I’d be done by April but it’s looking more and more likely it will be over the summer. I’m happy with that .

I'm a size 20-22 and no doubt would qualify.
But sulphur burps? Reflux? Diarrhoea? Nausea?
Erm...no ta. I can do without making my life even more joyless.

Some people don't tolerate it well. Some people also overeat beyond their tolerance despite the drug or eat fried fatty food both of which make you feel nauseous.

I feel the same. Here the weightloss meds are not as common or accepted. I talked to doctor about it and they just dismissed the query. I don't know anyone who has them. I'm I'm a weightloss group and all thenspecialist are very diet and exercise. I'd love to get some help through meds.

That does actually worry me a bit - that I'll take it but it won't help me lose any weight. Everyone seems to be saying how much of a miracle it is and the weight is just coming off effortlessly and I'm worried I won't get that!

Have to say I’m surprised you know so many people on it. Were they overweight but just not “overweight enough “ to qualify for it without lying about their stats?

Exactly this - not quite overweight enough. I (used to) work in a pretty well-paid career path so the people I know who are on it all have the money to use it - and to some extent it's been a domino effect, everyone else is using it why should I etc. 2 of them were deffo obese - as in 4/5/6 stone to lose. The rest were simply overweight - but, like me, have struggled all their lives to lose that 20lbs/couple of stone that makes us feel chubby. They said they were heavier than they were, and took photos from bad angles.

They are now having to do some mental maths to try and make their real weights match the weights they're telling the company they're at so they can start to wean down.

ugh that's horrendous.

I threw up 3 times in one day when on Ozempic and my husband said please stop taking that stuff and I agreed as did feel done with it.

And I was being careful to eat well too ... some people just respond more strongly to it than others.

I also have really bad nausea and vomiting on it, id have thrown up 5 times within an hour of getting up, but i know plenty of people who have been absolutely fine side effects free. I have moved up through the doses as the lower doses didnt work great for me, but others lost loads from 2.5mg. Its different for everyone. Ive stuck with it as i had to lose weight (7 stone, ive lost 6 so far) and struggled massively myself, as i had to go to 800 cals to lose anything. Its miserable some times, its not easy, its not a magic jab. But it is working. Im managing the side effects better now, the first 24 hours after the jab are hard still, but the rest of the week is ok, well manageable. I plan to reduce the dose once i hit my target and hopefully thats the end of side effects too, but ultimately i couldnt carry on as i was, i had to decide whther the side effects were worth it and chose they were. I would pay for lower doses for the rest of my life, id deal with the 24 hours of feeling like death for he rest of my life, if it stops me going back to what i was before.

And I’ve been on Mounjaro since October and have thrown up once.

Goatinthegarden · 02/03/2025 15:46

I get what you mean by feeling jealous. I’m a healthy weight, and it takes a lot of effort to stay that way. I run, cycle, train, etc. I plan my food, I fast, I cook from scratch, don’t touch upf, etc, etc. When really, I sometimes think I’d like to sit on the sofa and just eat pizza and cake for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

WLIs sound like a magic wand - ‘look, that person could never lose weight before, but now they look like they’re doing it dead easily and I want that’. Except thats not the case, they’re basically just injecting some help with willpower. The drug is helping them to avoid food, they are still having to eat less and consider what they eat - and the drug comes with side effects to make them not want to eat. I can summon the willpower to avoid food, I just don’t like having to use it. I’m sure I also wouldn’t like the side effects that WLIs offer up.

My friend is on Mountjaro and I’m happy for her. Her food battles have been hard, her binges frightening. Now she’s losing weight quickly which was badly effecting her health and happiness. I’m not jealous of her - she’s had years of difficulties and I have not had the same challenges. I do worry about her long term health because of the drugs, but the weight was also a concern. I hope in the long run everything works out well for her.

I try not to focus on scales and what I look like, but rather whether I’m healthy or not. Eating good quality, fresh food, sleeping well, exercising (and having fun doing it) and having some of the less good-for-me treats all really, really improve my life, even if it takes a bit of effort and willpower to stick to it all. I don’t think WLI will improve my health or quality of life.

Ultimately, there’s no point in being jealous of someone else’s weight loss battle. You have the same options open to you if you choose them. But do you really want them?

SnacklessWonder · 02/03/2025 15:46

I never had a single side effect, I must have been one of the lucky ones!

HeavyHeidi · 02/03/2025 15:50

I haven't had any side effects, besides feeling cold, but that happens with weight loss anyway. I know pleny of people on mj who haven't had any issues. But I've also heard of many people who for some reason believe that they can keep eating large amounts of unhealhty food, and weight will just magically drop off. I would not be surprised if those people also suffered more side effects.

MajorCarolDanvers · 02/03/2025 15:50

Better mental and physical health
less diabetes
less high blood pressure
less strokes, heart disease, heart attacks

yes I can see why you are jealous of those taking wli

better they should remain overweight and unhealthy - yes?

People always say this but it comes across as judgemental like you are saying the only people who get side effects are likely to be those who have been a bit stupid.

I can assure you that while I had bad side effects (on Ozempic) I only ate small portions of healthy food while on it. Some people are just unlucky!

JenniferBooth · 02/03/2025 15:56

MinnieCoops · 02/03/2025 09:27

I didn't have any of those. It's not a given that you'll have any side effects at all. Loads on the threads on here have had none either.

Im overweight but suffer with bowel issues. My GP cant work out why im not losing weight given that i shit every time ive eaten. There is no way id take this stuff Lots of us with bowel issues have to plan our lives around shit already (i had to take precautionary Imodium the night before my dads funeral) so i have too many problems as it is to risk it.

I have lost weight before 10 stone weight loss through Slimming World without pharmaceutical intervention. But because the first seven stone came off in seven months i got gallstones. Ive never known pain like it. Im trying to lose weight naturally slowly and @Sundayslump im not affected by what other people are doing or whats in the media. Ive never been easily influenced by that sort of thing (as some posters will probably remember by my stance on the lockdowns) plus im early 50s so didnt grow up with the internet. My weight loss above was 20 years ago and it is easier when you are younger. But as for looking at other people If they lose weight because thats what they want , great im happy for them Jealous? No im not that type of person and have too much going on in my own life. But i do expect that respect for their decision to be reciprocated!!

I agree. On bad days i can just have sips of water and throw up continously all day long. I dont over eat, in fact i barely eat, but my side effects are still really bad. But prior to MJ i reacted badly to alot of prescription medications too. Yes certain foods make it worse (dairy mostly) but its just the individual, not the choices they make in a lot of cases.
