Posting here mainly for traffic.

The last week or so I've felt terrible. Finally took an iron tablet and felt so much better.
Problem is that better didn't last very long so I took another one..then another and then another. All together 80mg, one packet is mixed with other things and one is just 20mg.
I've convinced myself I'm going to die. Please someone reassure me I'm going to be okay

Try not to worry yourself lovely! Definitely wait for paramedic/a and e help but if it’s any condolences, I take 200mg over the counter a day to prevent anemia so if you are female you should be fine x

But you still said YES. Thereby hitting their criteria for sending out help.

How postpartum are you?! Is this severe postpartum anxiety? Anxiety over being alone with your children? If you have health anxiety why on earth did you keep taking the pills? Answer these questions and people may be able to advise you.

Yeah because that's the truth, but I did state they weren't new or related.
My youngest is 8 months.
No definitely not about being alone with my children, when they're awake and with me is when I feel my best and happiest.
Because I felt so awful I genuinely believed they were helping me

hotchocfiend · 01/03/2025 21:39

80mg is honestly nothing and you do not need an ambulance. I take 210mg tablets for anaemia and they are recommended as 2 a day initially. If 420mg a day is medically advised for people then 80mg is more than ok.

StillweriseLH · 01/03/2025 21:39

AquaPeer · 01/03/2025 21:35

They just wouldn’t send an ambulance based on those words they would ask what and how much

this makes zero sense

plus where are your children going to go when the ambulance takes you to hospital?

Not quite but close enough, many years ago I called 111 for a young child who had bashed his lip. They asked how long ago, I said 2/3 hours, they asked if it was still bleeding I said yes but not a lot, and they wanted to send an ambulance!

I only wanted to know if I could put something like ulcer plaster gel on it!! I told them not to bother and I went to the pharmacist myself.

dannyufcfan · 01/03/2025 21:39

Glad you cancelled the ambo. That would have been a waste of important resources.

Try and see your GP about your health anxiety. Because this was, a bonkers over reaction.

That's just what they said and that's the exact way it happened.
I have one person who can sit in while they're sleeping if necessary but judging by these answers, it's not.

Please may I ask, and this is a genuine question without judgement - I’m just really curious, what changed in your thought process between “Im going to take a fifth iron tablet” and “oh no I’m in a panic, I think I’ve taken a fatal dose of iron”? How long after did you start to worry?

I hope you feel better soon.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 01/03/2025 21:39

I used to take the Spatone natural iron water supplement which was 5ml sachets. They said one a day for a dose, or two if you are pregnant. I once took 6 in one go and felt nothing (admittedly my ferritin levels were very low - an 11, I think, so i was desperate to feel better.

I know this probably bears no relevance really, as the dose in the Spatone was proportionally lower, but I'm sure as PP have said, you could have an iron infusion and be ok at much higher doses.

UncharteredWaters · 01/03/2025 21:40

It’s 111 they send an ambulance for a sneeze but not a stroke.

Velmy · 01/03/2025 21:40

Soitis83 · 01/03/2025 21:15

I know I definitely have low iron as I'm my last pregnancy she said I was very low. I'm not sure how they made me feel better so quickly. But honestly, I do have massive health anxiety

They didn't, that's not how iron tablets work.

mummysmagicmedicine · 01/03/2025 21:41

The people on this thread are disgusting. Op obviously is in a stressful situation and I just think if you have nothing helpful to say don’t bother saying anything. OP has disclosed having health anxiety so whether you think an ambulance is ott or not please keep your opinions to yourself instead of stressing out an already anxious and potentially unwell person.

TheWombatleague · 01/03/2025 21:41

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 01/03/2025 21:17

I certainly don't think you need an ambulance if that makes you feel any better....

Surely the body just pisses out any excess vitamins? It doesn't absorb everything in them and it doesn't sound like a massive dose anyway.

No, that's only true for water soluble vitamins.

I was texting someone and said "I've just taken another iron tablet as that dizzyness is back" and they replied "make sure you don't take too much!" Which prompted me to Google, Google told me it was too much but I think I read it wrong as someone else pointed out. I googled a number for toxicity or something along those lines for advice but it said to call 111. And here we are

I've had a similar type of anxiety when my children were young too OP. Rational thinking definitely goes out the window.

You're not alone, there are heaps of people out there feeling the same way as you. Finding someone to talk to about it will help. What is your support network like?

You're very sweet, thank you.
I have this fear all of a sudden that I'm going to die and leave my children alone. It's so sudden and my health anxiety is overwhelming. I have never felt like this before so have no idea what's triggered it!
No I've taken nothing else, just the iron tablets.

Oh no! So sorry to read you feel like this. Stress is such a cruel invasion for anyone. I've been there!
Has something (or more than one thing) happened to make you feel like this (a week or so ago)?
Even having a chat to a good friend will help you - as sometimes everything can get overwheming just because. Can you ring anyone now? 🤞

Rubbish. I have one family member left but he isn't interested in me or my family really. Small circle of friends but I hate feeling like I'm burdening anyone with my problems so don't talk to them.
It's practically just me

I truly do not mean to sound harsh here but OP I suspect the ambulance was being dispatched because you'd called 111 in such acute distress.. because you'd willingly taken a barely therapeutic dose of iron. You decided they were making you feel better.. until you decided they would be fatal.
I hope you can understand how concerning that all sounds - ambulance most likely MH related as callhandler troubled by your decision making especially if you've disclosed you're at home alone with children. Do you feel safe? I think it might be best to have your friend pop round and sit with you for a while.

DrummingMousWife · 01/03/2025 21:13

an Ambulance for 80mg ?! Wow. I didn’t think that would be logged as urgent enough for an ambulance to be honest .

Mental health emergency involving deliberate overdose is every bit as serious as physical. She needs help quickly before she takes further tablets. It's not just the number of pills that's concerning
Iron overdose can definitely be fatal.

Not disgusting behaviour at all... people are just fed up with our resources being wasted by non-emergencies and people being dumb.

There's been a lot of sudden deaths around me the last 5 years. Perhaps it's all caught up to me I'm not sure. But it's debilitating!

Perhaps you're right.
But for the last week I've felt dreadful. So out of sorts, dizzy and not quite with it if that makes sense?
I could do but I always fear I'm a burden

Iron overdose can definitely be fatal.

I’ve just gone down a bit of a rabbit hole on this and read a paper published by the niH suggesting they have only been able to locate 2 recorded cases of death from overdose of iron, both in India and the women took 200mg/ kg and 400mg/ kg respectively.

I understand where you’re coming from, but if everyone responded positively that an ambulance had been called, there’s a realistic prospect that the OP will read those responses and think that everyone agrees that she’s seriously at risk. How is that going to do anything but send a person with very clearly severe health anxiety into complete panic mode?

I don’t think anyone has responded with the intention of being nasty, but in surprise that one would be sent.
