Posting here mainly for traffic.

The last week or so I've felt terrible. Finally took an iron tablet and felt so much better.
Problem is that better didn't last very long so I took another one..then another and then another. All together 80mg, one packet is mixed with other things and one is just 20mg.
I've convinced myself I'm going to die. Please someone reassure me I'm going to be okay

What on earth have I just read?? I take 200mg iron a day. A tablet won’t instantly make you feel better. Did you use the word overdose and that is why you are getting an ambulance?? I begged for one two weeks ago with an unconscious husband and after three hours they sent a taxi !!! He was in hospital over a week but no ambulances!!

Oh my gosh ! That's awful I'm so sorry. No I didn't say overdose. I was very matter of fact with what I've taken at what times

I called 111 for advice and she said she's sending an ambulance

Of course they did. Because 111 follows a checklist, and you said “overdose” didn’t you? Or told them you’d taken too many tablets. It’s a flag on their system

likewise if u ring 111 and say “bleeding from a head wound that won’t stop” you’ll got told A&E or ambulance before you can explain you pinched your skin with the tweezers when doing your eye brows and you keep dabbing the blood.

This. I'm no medical expert but I'm pretty sure taking 4 over the counter iron tablets doesn't constitute an ambulance coming out or a medical emergency. I'm struggling to believe that this is true!

I was on prescription does iron tablets before, 3 times a day. I can't remember the dose but pretty sure it was a lot more than what the OP has taken. Iron tablets don't instantly make you feel better either. This whole post is just completely bizarre.

I can promise you I'm no troll. The ambulance surprised me too I just wanted advice. Maybe it was a placebo effect? Either way it definitely made me feel better, not 100% but better than I did

I'm sure you can get iron infusions at 1000mg in one sitting, I don't think 80mg is going to do much harm, but best to get checked out anyway. Could you notnget a taxi to your a&e? It would be much quicker. I wouldn't overthink it if you can help it (easier said than done I know)

DragonBalls · 01/03/2025 21:20

This does not make sense.

I can’t believe 111 would send an ambulance. They must have thought you sounded unreliable in your account of what you had taken.

I know health anxiety doesn’t have to make sense, but surely some common sense can cut through…

Edited

I didn't say overdose at all. I told her the exact amount at the exact times taken

maybe the ambulance is for MH reasons….

CoastalCalm · 01/03/2025 21:21

Did you tell them you were feeling unwell ?

Reugny · 01/03/2025 21:21

Placebo effect.

It takes a few weeks for iron to make you feel better.

Those who are told to get prescriptions get prescribed 1-4 of iron compound tablets which contain 60-70mg of iron in each tablet. So that's nearly 4 times the amount you have taken.

(I remember at one point one of my SILs had to take 6 per day. )

MiserableMrsMopp · 01/03/2025 21:22

I'm prescribed 400mg a day so I think you'll be fine on 80mg.

Soitis83 · 01/03/2025 21:22

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 01/03/2025 21:17

I certainly don't think you need an ambulance if that makes you feel any better....

Surely the body just pisses out any excess vitamins? It doesn't absorb everything in them and it doesn't sound like a massive dose anyway.

I stupidly got onto google that told me an iron overdose can be fatal. Anything over 60mg was dangerous is what I read..

happytobee · 01/03/2025 21:22

I’d ring 999 and tell them to cancel the ambulance, who is going to look after the children if you go to the hospital anyway?

Soitis83 · 01/03/2025 21:23

CoastalCalm · 01/03/2025 21:21

Did you tell them you were feeling unwell ?

No she asked me all the questions and my answer was no to all other than heart palpitations which I have told her I've had for over a week anyway so not related

OP posts:
RedVelvetIcing · 01/03/2025 21:23

This is a massive overreaction. The call handler must have misunderstood.

RobertaFirmino · 01/03/2025 21:23

You'll be fine. You can expect to have a massive black shit the size of King Kong's finger in around 48 hours though.

Hercisback1 · 01/03/2025 21:23

This is why you don't trust Google.

Hercisback1 · 01/03/2025 21:24

Google says 60mg/kg

Which means 60mg per kilogram of bodyweight.

You're fine OP. Cancel that ambulance.

Soitis83 · 01/03/2025 21:24

happytobee · 01/03/2025 21:22

I have someone who can drive over and sit here if needed. I literally just called 111 for advice I didn't expect the ambulance at all. It as soon as she said an ambulance will be on its way I went into panic mode thinking it was serious

And? What's going to happen to them if you miraculously need to go to hospital?

Quite!

I stupidly got onto google that told me an iron overdose can be fatal. Anything over 60mg was dangerous is what I read..

You didn’t read it properly though did you? It’s 60mg/kg for fatal toxicity.

RobertaFirmino · 01/03/2025 21:23

Thank you for making me laugh while I'm fighting off a panic attack

OP posts:
happytobee · 01/03/2025 21:25

Cancel the ambulance and tell them your friend is going to drive you to hospital, they will need to take you and stay with the children whilst you sit in a&e for 12 hours but surely you don’t want to waste resources of an already struggling public system?

Lileas · 01/03/2025 21:26

I still find it hard to believe that the cash strapped NHS is sending an ambulance for the sake of four vitamin tablets.

I've worked in care before and have had to phone NHS many times when there have been medication errors etc. The call handlers have always been meticulous, going over the type of drugs, doses and then liaising with a nurse to decide on the best course of action. I don't believe for one second that you told them you took four over the counter iron tablets, the dose of which is significantly LESS than what people take on a day on prescription tablets and they are sending an ambulance.

Ambulance in its way 21.02

Six minutes…. Amazing!

TeenLifeMum · 01/03/2025 21:28

Oh wow, you think that having 3 dc means you’re entitled to an ambulance home visit because going to A&E yourself is inconvenient? 🙄
