To think Britain should have nothing to do with this war

Foodtimeisit · 01/03/2025 12:54

After yesterday's news, Britain shouldn't be the one funding war as USA has said they are out now. There's no chance Britain can fight this war alone with Ukraine against Russia.
Since this war started, our life has only become miserable with CoL increase.
AIBU to think we shouldn't have anything to do this war and we should fix our own problems first before giving away our tax money?

I mean you are right in some respects of course- why don’t you pop over to the Middle East and mention that to the Israelis too.

Hamas is a terrorist organisation, so not quite tge same as one country at war with another.

But wait, aren’t Eastern European and Polish migrants propping up the benefits payouts economy for the lazy native Brits 🤭 You know, the ones who came over here and stole all the jobs from the chain smoking, big telly, tracksuit wearing, ‘hard’ British workers - the ones who never had a job since they left school and now they’ve got at least 9 children.

EE families in social housing doing the menial job fat lazy Brits won't do? OK. One child (conservative estimate) is 9K pa for a state school - 2008 data. If they have 2 kids - you calculate how much these costs the taxpayer, just to put them through school. And now let us speak about them 'paying taxes' - they don't even cover the cost of their offspring schooling! And then the social housing, top ups, credits or whatever they are, plus NHS services - great, isn't it?

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 01/03/2025 14:56

Have you read the poem "First they came" by Pastor Martin Neimoller?

Sorry, then all those Palestinian children were killed by the non-terrorist ISL or whatever they are called?

I disagree . I think Putin only wants Ukraine. It’s clearly always been about the natural resources and he thought it would be easy as Zelensky isn’t an experienced politician or leader. I think a lot of countries backing Ukraine were hoping to help and get something in return (access again to those natural resources) but now it’s gone on so long that Trump has steamrollered in and made it clear what it’s always been about, thought he could get it sorted asap and is now losing his temper as he can’t. He will be warning us off next and telling any country that backs Ukraine that they are also going to be responsible for WW3

Aye and Adolf only wanted Poland!

I don’t think it’s a very good idea for us to piss off the Americans.

Some of you are asking us to think about history. Ok then. From what I remember the Italians and Germans were the aggressors in WW2, and the French let the Germans walk through to get to us. Then the Americans joined in and were pivotal in saving our arses.

Of course there was more to it than this, however I really don’t believe the Americans would stand by and ever let anyone bomb the UK. I think they’d react to protect us immediately.

The rest of Europe….France, Germany, Spain, Italy…..hmmmmm I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Edited

You don’t seem to remember it correctly.
Italy didn’t become involved until June 1940 because Mussolini thought he could appease Hitler by being on his side. If you don’t know what happened to Mussolini then I suggest you look it up, it wasn’t good. Italy then declared war on Germany in 1943 and joined the allied armies.

The US repeatedly refused to help until 1940 but only supplied aid and not troops, but after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour in 1941 they declared war on Japan, and later on Germany. So in actual fact the Americans DID stand back and allow us to be bombed, for two years.

Oh and you’ve also forgotten that Russia was on our side. Stalin had also tried to appease Hitler and spoiler alert, it didn’t work, you can’t appease dictators.

Britain is the 8th largest contributor to the Ukraine war, but the British media seem to promote the idea that this is Britain alone support Zalensky. The largest support for Ukraine's war are the contries that border Ukraine and Russia, all less wealthy countries than the UK (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland). Denmark, a much small country than ours tho' wealthier, also makes a larger contribution than us. However, despite not having a land border with Ukraine or Russia, we are all threatened by Putin through cyber attacks (ever wondered why banks and NHS systems go down?), meddling in elections and corrupt oligarchs. We should not bury our heads in the sand.

And Trump ... a friend recently went to South Africa, very difficult to get Internet. Starlink?

It's not just Britain and Ukraine against Russia, it's most of Europe.

Biscuitsnotcookies · 01/03/2025 15:02

I am not going to support the abandonment of Ukraine.

I sincerely hope all sides will find a landing strip, so we can avoid an escalation.

Regardless of your posture. Where are be getting the money for the war? 60 percent of the U.K. is in some sort of benefits? Most people would say happy to pay more in taxes but we know most are not even net contributors.

Need to get people in work ... to many being paid to sit at home, or elsewhere doing nothing. I'm not talking about people who are really dusabled here!

And Israel have bombed the fuck out of millions of innocent Palestinians, killed over 40k of them and seem bent on genocide. So yeah, you’re right. Not quite the same thing.

Livelovebehappy · 01/03/2025 15:03

It’s becoming increasingly apparent that Zelenskyy wants us to up our contribution to the war. Financial aid is no longer helping. He wants feet on the ground - wants us to provide human fodder for their war. How many on here baying for Russia to be destroyed would be happy with their sons, husbands, brothers going to fight in Ukraine? Not many I’ll bet. Financial aid can only help so far, but then you need actual foot soldiers. Money won’t buy soldiers, only finance weapons. Russia will win eventually without Europe providing people to fight for them.

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 01/03/2025 15:04

Hwi · 01/03/2025 14:36

I am speaking for myself and quite a few people I know - and of course I respect your right to donate to the cause, house those who seek refuge in your home, send your wages to the cause altogether, fly whatever non-UK flag you want to fly, etc. etc. I just don't care enough for foreign problems, that is all.

Blimey Nigel, tone it down a bit, you sound quite racist.

SunDash · 01/03/2025 15:05

Defending Europe is cheaper and safer in the long term than letting the Red Army march back to Berlin.
Putin could be ousted at any time, as everyone knows what a rubbish idea invading Ukraine was...he could fall out his window, and the guy who comes after might be more friendly.

It’s a good job our forebears didn’t take that attitude in 1939 isn’t it.

I DO understand - he won't touch the UK - all his cronies have their children in our boarding schools and at UK universities, he is not going to bomb his own, is he? If you dislike the fact, you should have protested numerous PMs, who allowed dirty Russian money and their corrupt Russian families settle here since 1992 and buy our politicians since 1994.

@Hwi
You are so ignorant. Do you think Putin cares about his people? How many has he got killed in his ‘special operation’? Do you think he is loyal to anybody? He’ll be happy kill anybody for the ‘greater good of Mother Russia”.

Yep, all because the terrorists (Hamas) refused to return the hostages they took in October 2023. How many Palestinians could have been saved by Hamas just releasing the people they kidnapped back to their families? But instead they went to war sacrificing their ‘people’ for what? Nothing. Just ended up with a pile of rubble and 40k deaths. And stop trying to derail this thread by bringing Israel into it. Start your own thread…..

I didn't realise there are so many war hungry people here.
I think the solution should be diplomatic negotiations and peace.

Maybe pop over to Russia and have a chat with Putin.

Na, just a quick skin colour check eh🙄

You’re forgetting about the population of native Brits that have never worked aren’t you? There’s several generations who have never worked. You are aware that not all working people are not receiving any type of top up from the government? Most EE countries have a better
level of education, government housing and health care. The reason most people come over (unless they are refugees) is because the wages are much higher in the UK. You see it all the time that menial jobs aren’t covered by Brits, the farmers have British fruit and veg pickers leaving in droves because they can’t hack the job. You know that was why the school summer holidays were invented- for the harvest. But the harvesting in the UK is mainly done by immigrants who are used to doing the harvest at home. I send my teens back to Latvia for the summer to do the harvest at a cousins farm and they get a lot out of it. And unfortunately I’m a higher rate tax payer but it is what it is, our responsibility to the society we live in.

Luckily most Brits can remember what happens when you appease an aggressive, territory hungry dictator. Last one reached the French coast and bombed the UK.

And lots of young men died, many of them working class, many people don’t even wear poppies as a reminder of their sacrifice.

Many people in this country don’t have the appetite for another war overseas. Particularly as we never really come out it politically well.

The point is that this is a war with another country in Europe, not the middle east.

If Putin wins, he will creep onwards to other countries on the border, like Hitler did.

The stand against Putin is the same as the stand against Hitler. We have NATO and it's supposed to work.
