Have to be honest since trump won i wasn't going anyway. But anyone cancelling or going elsewhere?
I have a big birthday this year, I would go to the garbage dump rather than support America,/musk in any way. I know therwmis at least half of America that doesn't.support this shxt and for them I am sorry but for the republicans too spineless and self interested to resist their dictator.trump...not one iota of sympathy for the rising prices loss of Medicaid or medicare.

YABU ..to cancel/Not go
YANBU...wouldn't touch it with a bargepole

Wont set foot on US soil while that bully is still alive

TizerorFizz · 01/03/2025 09:03

The vast majority of the travel business in the USA is from Americans. It’s followed by Canadians and Mexicans. We are next! However if we don’t go in such numbers it won’t make much difference. Not sure businesses will notice that much.

Everywhere is expensive now. Canada isn’t cheap either. The expense issue isn’t just hotels it’s tax and tips. Mexico is probably cheaper but few long haul places are cheap but maybe South Africa should be on everyone’s list? No Disney though!

In Washington there’s 5 star and 5 star! Some are way more luxurious than others.

CremeBruhlee · 01/03/2025 09:04

It has gone down our list to be honest since all of this but was off our top spots from a gun control point of view anyway. We love to explore and wander about on holiday and have 2 young kids and the gun aspect would put us off. I wouldn’t cancel a previously booked holiday though and will certainly travel to the US again, favouring New York or more Democratic states. I would probably choose Canada over America at the moment. We had pencilled in a trip to the LA olympics though (we went to and loved Paris) but all of this has soured my outlook on that as it just feels too unstable at the moment.

Adelstrop · 01/03/2025 09:05

I would be too nervous at the moment. Who knows what Trump might do next?

There are much more interesting cities here in Canada than those in the US.

I will probably be visiting Canada this year as it happens but it is a nonsense that the USA is so expensive that no one can afford to visit (which is the comment that I was responding to). Many parts of Europe have become shockingly expensive and London is at the top of the list. The other problem is that as a family of four (with our oldest DC over age 12) it is difficult to get a hotel room to accommodate all of us in many European cities which means we have to get two rooms and that significantly increases the cost. We don’t have the same problem in North America.

My young adult child just cancelled his trip (part of a bigger adventure) owing to politics (he's rather well informed) , safety (air traffic control!!) , law and order (guns out of control) and racism (overt, widespread and grim).

He's off to other interesting places instead.

I'm so relieved.

And to posters saying that this reaction is hysterical - things are moving very, very fast at the moment. I'd be amazed if there isn't widespread civil unrest very very soon. And as for the dangers for women in healthcare.....very real. And racism ?

My other (white) child has a black partner and they cancelled a US trip last year as they just didn't feel safe as a mixed race couple. It's a very small risk in getting caught up in an incident but why have that stress on what's supposed to be a fun trip? They went to Portugal instead and had a whale of a time.

Dolaly · 01/03/2025 09:10

I will be hesitant to go, it's nothing to do with boycotting but from a security perspective.

The US is going into free fall, civil unrest is around the corner, a lot of those who voted him in are now some of the ones who have been fired overnight, unemployed and humiliated. Rule of law has taken a huge hit, next possibility is for Trump to jail anyone who criticises him, His Gaza AI has put every American in the cross fire of fundamentalists around the world, his alignment with Putin is terrifying and he is dismantling his own countrys' infrastructure piece by piece.

I would be very wary of travelling there now.

Amiokay · 01/03/2025 09:14

I’m going next week to see my girl friends who are all democrats. Some of them contemplating whether to leave the country. Some who are pregnant saying they won’t be visiting southern states in case anything goes wrong health wise and they’re at risk. I’m not cancelling and I’ll still go and see them after this trip (pending any crazy events that might mean it’s not a good idea safety wise!)

LongDarkTeatime · 01/03/2025 09:18

Since yesterday’s press conference can’t help thinking of Russia and USA as Russia Major and Russia minor.
The Americans definitely looked like they staged the meeting just like Russia does it’s propaganda. The split in the populace may also be happening.

That's a real pity because the fall leaves are incredible. Such a shame to miss out on an amazing country because of politics.

Edited

The fall leaves happen every year and they are just as beautiful in Canada. You don’t have to miss out if that is what you are looking to see.

And yeah I’ve lived there and seen both countries fall many many many times.

Parker231 · 01/03/2025 07:22

Surely after the White House performance you are questioning why he was elected?

I'm not sure what point you're making. I've been questioning why he was elected ever since last November.

Wimbledonmum1985 · 01/03/2025 08:20

Yep, this is one of the most ludicrous hysterical threads I’ve read on MN in a while.

Nothing about this thread is hysterical except maybe your hyperbole in describing it as such.

ConnieSlow · 01/03/2025 09:26

SnoozingFox · 28/02/2025 20:46

As per usual on MN, loads of people who never had any intention of going to America virtue signalling saying how they would not ever, EVER go. It's like me saying that I would never EVER get on a rocket and fly to Mars. Or 4 years ago people refusing to come to the UK because of Boris.

I have actually been to the US recently and am flying off to a Republican state in a month or so. Trump is not representative of the country as a whole - and not all traditional Republican voters think he's great either.

All the "it's dangerous for women" - give me a break.

Exactly so laughable the goody goodies on here.

Longwaysouth · 01/03/2025 09:26

Many years ago for my 21st my family were keen to send me on a trip to South Africa to stay with relatives. It sounded amazing. I thanked them kindly but refused to visit South Africa due to apartheid.
It just so happened at the time I would have travelled things erupted in SA.

Instead they gave me an internal card Europe and help with accomodation. That was fantastic as you got to meet local people on the trains. Much more interesting. I am still good friends with people I met on that 1st interrail holiday.

21 year olds aren't kids they are adults who have their own principals.

Midnightlove · 01/03/2025 09:26

I'm.going to florida at Easter. Trump is an arsehole, but I'm not going there to see him 🤷‍♀️

Why would you not go to the US….?

@MidnightPatrol

do you not watch the news?

Nothing on the news suggests I’ll be at any risk travelling to the US.

Huzzahs · 28/02/2025 22:15

Genuine and hopefully not goady question for those boycotting America - do you the same standards when considering holidays to oppressive regimes like Dubai or UAE, or countries in Europe with far right Parties in charge like Hungary, Italy or the Czech Republic?

I understand your question, you are not goady at all.

I won't consider traveling to Dubai or UAE. As for the European countries with far right governments, while I find the governments abhorrent, the reach of their politics is not global and women's rights are (still) holding.

The US: love the country, lived there for many years. However, its global influence makes this shift to the right quite dangerous. They are a world power with huge reach.
Also, I completely agree with @PurpleThistle7 . Pregnant? I wouldn't recommend traveling there, even on business, as you might be stranded without care. As I'm not pregnant, I will travel there for business, but will not plan trips for fun.

Yeah so you have completely missed the point entirely.

Motheranddaughter · 01/03/2025 10:37

We had been considering going to the US in March for my birthday but decided against it due to Trump’s re election
Am not saying I won’t go throughout his term, but it just seemed wrong to go now

This isn't just about you.

Takoneko · 01/03/2025 10:51

I had no immediate plans to visit the US and have never been before, so I’m not sure it’s really affected my travel plans in practice. However, the US is not somewhere I would consider travelling to now. I only visit democracies where basic freedoms are respected. I wouldn’t rule out a country because their current government was not to my taste, as long as I felt they were democratically elected and their people had basic rights and freedoms and the ability to vote them out should they choose to. I don’t feel confident that that is the case in the US any more. During Trump’s first term, I strongly disliked his government and policies but would still have felt confident visiting the US and describing it as a democracy. It doesn’t feel that way now. The normal democratic processes are breaking down, the constitution is being treated as merely advisory and checks and balances have completely evaporated.

AtIusvue · 01/03/2025 10:59

Support Canada and instead of going to the US, go see the spectacular scenery there 🍁

LivingDeadGirlUK · 01/03/2025 11:01

ThisFluentBiscuit · 01/03/2025 07:12

I can certainly understand not going to certain parts of the US for that reason. But DC has a high proportion of people of colour, as does NYC, and both are great places to visit. I think you'd be OK there and also in other deep blue, tolerant cities and states. But I get why you'd give it a miss. OTOH, why let racism dictate where you go!

I'm sure you are right, I have been to SF and it was a fab holiday. However there is a whole world to choose from so no rush to visit an emerging fascist state.
