To want to help Ukraine- is there ANYTHING we can do????

Helpforthosethatneedit · 28/02/2025 20:23

I am just so sad watching Zelensky. He's had his country invaded by Russia, fought for survival and now he's got Trump and Vance gaslighting him. Mumsnet, there's posts every day on here about this sort of behaviour, but usually it is happening in playgrounds. Wonderful advice is given. But this is not a playground. This is the world. How can we/ the little people help? I feel so so helpless. Please give ideas? Can we do something to support Ukraine and potentially change the future?

Aibu?

Yes- frankly, we, the little people have nothing we can do to help.
No- We need to fight to help Ukraine and keep Europe safe (and here's my idea....)

I agree with a pp, if you want to help you can go and fight. I believe the untrained recruits live less than a week but to quote Liz Truss ‘we will fight until the last Ukrainian’ but not her obvs. Failing that you could always virtue signal on Twitter or be thankful the war might end, maybe?

RayonSunrise · 01/03/2025 09:37

I will be boycotting American tech companies - they are complicit in Trump's support for authoritarianism.

I will also be writing to my MP and telling them we need to be closer to the rest of Europe and the remaining democratic countries. Better trade links, closer military links, anything to help us hedge against the new tyrannical version of the US and its Russian partner.

I was slightly heartened by the recent report that some Town Hall meetings of republicans have been angry affairs for republican officials.

@Maray1967 I'm hearing that they're all being told to avoid any public meetings. I watched a video of Kevin Kiley being booed the other day (he's a Republican in California so obviously the things that he had to say were at odds with the views of the people in the state as a whole) but reading reports from Sacramento he's completely uncontactable as a representative.

Yes, I suppose that’s not surprising in terms of PR management but that response can’t work forever. Sooner or later republican governors will need to face reelection.

One of us must have an old suit we can send over for Zelenskyy. That might help. Not sure how we can get it over there, aid convoy maybe?

Edited

What are you on about. His country is in a state of war and you want him to wear a suit?

His attire matches his countries situation and is appropriate.

I agree. Those posting on SM on others fighting can do this instead.

My reply asking you to add Rabbits At War run by Patricia Hinsen-Rind has been hidden by MN. Rabbits at War have been evacuating small animals since the war began with a network of foster carers and transporters as well as paying for veterinary care as needed.

Can't believe MN are anti rabbit, I suspect just the AI moderation probably misfired in this case.
It is simply incredible, the extent to which the Ukrainian support is crowdfunded.

Well at the moment anyone from the UK who goes to fight in Ukraine could be prosecuted if and when they return to the UK. The Foreign Office advises people look at other ways to help Ukraine. So a bit foolish to suggest this.

Out of interest ES, what do you think should happen next for Ukraine?

Hmm nope. Count me out of this nonsense. I ain't going out armed with this ridiculous list when shopping.

You don't have to but some of us can and will no longer purchase some of these brands.

Yes every thread on this topic gets infiltrated by them. It's painfully obvious

Fawful · 01/03/2025 10:27

I'm not seeing the difference between my taxes being used for the war effort, and me sending funds directly. I was talking about the Ukrainian war effort, not the UK's, btw. Obviously I don't want any soldier of any nationality to die. But we all know that's what 'supporting Ukraine' means, so I find the handwringing disingenuous. If you supported D Day then what is your problem with the concept of fighting for freedom this time round? The alternative to war for Ukrainians is life under Putin. What kind of life can you built for yourself under Putin? The anger at the corruption would eat me alive. Putin is worth $200 bn, btw. There's nothing he can't own and do in Russia. And then he'd go to war with Georgians, Moldovans, the Baltic states, and why not Poland?
I think I'll donate to cars4ukraine, thank you to pps.

Absolutely. Apart from the fact we may also mostly be liabilities in the battlefield.

He cancelled the elections. Look up dictator in the dictionary. He also banned religions, media and opposition parties. He has a 4% approval rating and yes he is now filthy rich.

This is all from the Putin playbook and has been refuted with the facts many times on MN.

EasternStandard · 01/03/2025 11:06

Apart from the fact we may also mostly be liabilities in the battlefield.

Sadly young people are dying in the thousands daily because it's just a war of attrition and bodies at receiving end of kit provided.

They happen to be young men which is woeful in itself but anyone keen could do that. Notwithstanding the law of course.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 01/03/2025 11:08

Dotjones · 28/02/2025 20:33

Get over there and fight. They are running short on troops and need replacements. Training of sorts is provided although it's very much "on the job" training. It's technically illegal for someone from the UK to go and fight but the authorities are likely to turn a blind eye while it is seen as a "just" war.

Very practical

Most countries cancel elections during war time. We did during WW2.
His approval rating (Reuters) is 63% not 4%
But you do you.

No it isn’t. The conflicted area has had 70 years to find its own peace. Go and start your own thread. I don’t care about Palestine. Everything that is happening there is a consequence of the actions undertaken by the terrorist organisation the people of Palestine elected into power.

If Trump on Sea it’s to be then so be it.

Did the Palestinian babies who have died in Intensive Care units as a result of theIDF either killing them or withholding aid vote for Hamas?

Do you not think bombing hospitals is a war crime?

Whatafustercluck · 01/03/2025 08:04

How, though? I'm afraid I don't share your optimism. Unless Trump and Vance both succumb to White House carbon monoxide poisoning, I think they're here for the duration. Nothing, not even criminal proceedings, has stopped Trump so far.

I think there's going to be strong opposition and Trump and his band of monkeys will be forced out. How that opposition happens I don't know; courts, riots, protests, civil disobedience, walk out, conflict.

Can you imagine sitting by while some orange thug destroyed Parliament and joined dictators? I'd be on the streets.

Nice try. It's normal to cancel elections when you have been invaded and you are at war. And the rest of that is just classic russian bot bullshit (not saying you are one, of course, just that you have fallen for their nonsense hook line and sinker)

Trump won't be ousted. He is a dictator, hardly any better than his friend Putin.

Wildflowers99 · 01/03/2025 11:29

I’ve had a long think about this and the only thing the British public can reasonably do is indicate to Starmer we are happy to accept cuts in order to achieve 5% military spending, hopefully this will then give us some leverage to the US. As people we need to start standing on our own two feet rather than being so completely reliant on state handouts, frankly. The NHS and benefits bill are what are holding our defence spending back because they’re terrifyingly high and together make up 40% of our total spending. It will mean a lifestyle hit but it will be a small price to pay, frankly. It won’t happen as everyone is too reliant on free money and not working.
