To want to help Ukraine- is there ANYTHING we can do????

Helpforthosethatneedit · 28/02/2025 20:23

I am just so sad watching Zelensky. He's had his country invaded by Russia, fought for survival and now he's got Trump and Vance gaslighting him. Mumsnet, there's posts every day on here about this sort of behaviour, but usually it is happening in playgrounds. Wonderful advice is given. But this is not a playground. This is the world. How can we/ the little people help? I feel so so helpless. Please give ideas? Can we do something to support Ukraine and potentially change the future?

Aibu?

Yes- frankly, we, the little people have nothing we can do to help.
No- We need to fight to help Ukraine and keep Europe safe (and here's my idea....)

I’d look into the corruption around Ukraines mineral mining industry, if you’d like to have a little more detail. Much of this “peace deal” was based on Trump gaining access to their hugely profitable mineral mining industry, and with that would have to come transparency and thus huge amounts of corruption and who is involved would be uncovered. I think that’s part of the reason this “deal” has been scuppered.

And yet Trump is an actual felon who managed to get himself into the White House and pardon himself of all wrong doing.
Not to mention the thousands of other convicts he set free on day one.

IMO this clown show won't last too long. I think these idiots will be ousted. The best result for Ukraine is that someone sane replaces these fuckwits and reneges on all these 'agreements'.

How, though? I'm afraid I don't share your optimism. Unless Trump and Vance both succumb to White House carbon monoxide poisoning, I think they're here for the duration. Nothing, not even criminal proceedings, has stopped Trump so far.

I wonder if we could crowd-fund money directly for the war effort. I did send some money directly to some Ukrainian ministry of défense at some point. Obviously not everyone finds that appropriate/ethical... and of course, lasting peace is the goal, it's hard to see the way to that at the moment.
It's so upsetting :(
Zelenskyy's life is actually pretty ruined - he'll always have to watch over his shoulders for attempts on his life, and his family's too (that's not beneath Putin).
(I'm not even going to bother addressing the points raised by our bot friends. Youre wasting your time - sole silver lining!)

Just when you think you've read it all now you are suggesting the public personally fund a war. You really want to fund people dying? I hope you are willing to step up to the frontline yourself, if not don't expect anyone else to fight for another country.

In case anyone is interested in boycotting American products, for whatever reasons, I started making a list a while back. It's by no means complete so please do your own research.
I have no idea if boycotting is an effective response but according to this source in 2023 the UK imported 74 billion dollars of American goods.

Interestingly, European sales of Tesla have decreased by 8%.

That's a long list, and it would be almost impossible to avoid all of those I think, to be realistic (Microsoft?!) But I'll definitely be taking more care with my purchases where workable alternatives are available.

The minerals "deal" was nothing short of extortion: "Give us everything you've got and we'll write off what we've given you so far [which was offered as a gift not a loan at the time] but we're not going to make any promises going forward. Oh, get down on your knees and grovel too, just to satisfy our egos"

Exactly - no guarantees given that the US will continue with any support.

Trump is in Putin's pocket and all his shite about just wanting"peace" is a complete red herring which Zelensky is very aware of.

Thank you. Very useful. Microsoft, Apple and Duracell are the difficult ones for me but the one I’ll find most difficult to boycott is the one not on your list: TKMaxx

He may well not be. But for me this is also about getting the American population make a noise too. We can't vote at the ballot box but we can with our consumer choices

spuddy4 · 28/02/2025 22:02

@zendeveloper I protested against the war in Afghanistan and lost a family member who fought for his country so you don't have to patronise me with a petition to sign. It's the same thing happening again, everyone wants our country to step up but as I've said before it will be a different story when your children come home in a coffin. I don't believe in war and never will, it's not the answer and innocent people keep on dying for rich men.

What a fresh take. I have lost numerous friends and family members in the current war, and am monthly in Ukraine under air raids delivering aid. If you "don't believe in war" it only means that someone else is dying so that you can be safe.

Mightymoog · 01/03/2025 08:49

Dotjones · 28/02/2025 20:33

Get over there and fight. They are running short on troops and need replacements. Training of sorts is provided although it's very much "on the job" training. It's technically illegal for someone from the UK to go and fight but the authorities are likely to turn a blind eye while it is seen as a "just" war.

lol.

You could tell your MP how you feel, so if there’s a vote on more help for Ukraine they know how their constituents feel.

I don't want to be paying for an unwinnable war. Zelensky is a fool if he thinks he can get more money from the USA without giving them mineral rights.

Like the Spitfire Fund in WWII? An idea sparked by an eight year old.

Doing nothing will save no lives.

Actually I am disabled and rely heavily on Amazon so this will be a massive change for me.

And my children have allergies which mean it's often easiest to get food from McDonald's if we are out and about as they have easy safe choices.

My reply asking you to add Rabbits At War run by Patricia Hinsen-Rind has been hidden by MN. Rabbits at War have been evacuating small animals since the war began with a network of foster carers and transporters as well as paying for veterinary care as needed.
