To want to help Ukraine- is there ANYTHING we can do????

Helpforthosethatneedit · 28/02/2025 20:23

I am just so sad watching Zelensky. He's had his country invaded by Russia, fought for survival and now he's got Trump and Vance gaslighting him. Mumsnet, there's posts every day on here about this sort of behaviour, but usually it is happening in playgrounds. Wonderful advice is given. But this is not a playground. This is the world. How can we/ the little people help? I feel so so helpless. Please give ideas? Can we do something to support Ukraine and potentially change the future?

Aibu?

Yes- frankly, we, the little people have nothing we can do to help.
No- We need to fight to help Ukraine and keep Europe safe (and here's my idea....)

Of course. Putin is the same and stable statesman here.

It’s sad what’s happening in Ukraine but the horrors taking place in Palestinian jenocyde makes everything else pale in comparison :(

Incredible grift that you set in motion by forcing another nation to invade yours. Foolproof winner of a scheme.

I have the capacity to feel sad and horrified about more than one thing at once.

spuddy4 · 28/02/2025 22:53

@OneLemonDog and they still can't beat Russia with its old tanks.

Russia has, by any real measure, the second most powerful military in the world and Ukraine has had one hand tied behind its back by a NATO concerned with possible escalation.

There's many of us who think that time will tell that Zelensky was an absolute fraud. It's fine to question the loss of life. It's fine to question Zelensky's motivation. Read the testimonies of the men, facing conscription in the Ukraine, who don't want this war.

Wait what? How is Zelensky a fraud? The last I checked, Russia invaded Ukraine? @Ponoka7 Would love to hear your thoughts.

It would do well to remember history when Germany was “allowed” to invade other countries. Germany didn’t stop there and we know how that ended. So would we want history to repeat itself?

Barney16 · 28/02/2025 23:34

I'm so old that I remember the boycotts of all things South African to pressurise the government to free Nelson Mandela and end apartheid. People scoff about what they perceive as small actions, boycotts, writing to your MP or donating money. But actually they do have impact. Every tiny action contributes.

GarlicStyle · 28/02/2025 23:41

Thanks for this, OP. I've just written to my MP and donated (again).

F off with this. It's not appropriate. This is not a thread about Palestine. Derailing.

Ninjasan · 28/02/2025 23:55

I agree. OP you might also be able to offer your children to fight for that country soon. I think UK is already giving a lot of money to them.

So I've donated, signed a petition etc. Boycotting American goods. How easy is it? Is it helpful if lots do this? I'm certainly never buying a tesla!

No, its utterly meaningless.

maddening · 01/03/2025 00:14

PandoraSox · 28/02/2025 22:45

You are the one insinuating that the money has been funnelled off!

That was in response to the suggestion that ulraine has done something untoward with the money

Rainingalldayonmyhead · 01/03/2025 01:00

Velmy · 28/02/2025 23:58

No, its utterly meaningless.

No it really isn’t.

As I have said before as an example Canadians have boycotted Americans good to the tune of removing American alcohol off our shelves - to the tune of one billion dollars per year in Ontario alone.

www.reuters.com/world/americas/canadians-cancel-trips-ban-american-booze-after-trumps-tariffs-2025-02-03/

We have cancelled or not booked American travel which has already reduced tourism in the US by 400 million dollars and could cost 1.2 billion to the US economy.

nypost.com/2025/02/22/us-news/canadians-cancelling-us-travel-en-masse-in-face-of-tariff-threats/

We don’t have to be passive. Boycotting American goods can work.

I stand with Ukraine.

What about helping Palestine while we’re at it?!

Why? Israel didn’t invade and start a war with Palestinians. They tried to rescue hostages kidnapped by a terrorist organisation who Palestinians were harbouring. Totally different situation to what’s happening in Ukraine. So no, they won’t be getting any help from me, or many others I suspect.

Get over there and fight. They are running short on troops and need replacements. Training of sorts is provided although it's very much "on the job" training. It's technically illegal for someone from the UK to go and fight but the authorities are likely to turn a blind eye while it is seen as a "just" war.

This is really the only genuine answer. Money where mouth is, no?

Fawful · 01/03/2025 02:42

I wonder if we could crowd-fund money directly for the war effort. I did send some money directly to some Ukrainian ministry of défense at some point. Obviously not everyone finds that appropriate/ethical... and of course, lasting peace is the goal, it's hard to see the way to that at the moment.
It's so upsetting :(
Zelenskyy's life is actually pretty ruined - he'll always have to watch over his shoulders for attempts on his life, and his family's too (that's not beneath Putin).
(I'm not even going to bother addressing the points raised by our bot friends. Youre wasting your time - sole silver lining!)

sashh · 01/03/2025 03:07

zendeveloper · 28/02/2025 21:09

If you're thinking of practical help, the best cost / outcome efficiency is donating not to larger multinational charities (especially the Red Cross in Ukraine are utterly useless), but to one of many smaller initiatives who would really appreciate even a tiny donation, or a banger of a car that just takes space. British Ukrainian Aid, Jeeps for Peace, Car4Ukraine etc etc, I can give you a dozen names easily - I am more involved on the cars / ambulances side, but there are charities doing all kinds of staff.
Even if you want to come and help make tea and cake at one of regular fundraising events that would be a massive help.

Other than that, spread the truth on social media and offline. Share, ask questions, don't forget. Even with this post you've already done something.

Could you post links please?

EmeraldShamrock000 · 01/03/2025 03:15

Calling for support for Palestine on this thread is complete inappropriate.

Are you interested in Congo and Sudan?

This thread is clearly focusing on the issues in Ukraine.

I don't know OP. It's desperate.

Dabralor · 01/03/2025 04:01

Lots of weird responses on this thread - I think bots are hard at work tonight.

This televised slanging match was shameful. For some reason, it's Vance who has really angered me over Trump. We know Trump is a transactionalist - he makes deals and his opinion of people slides back and forth like a zero sum, binary game. He's also deeply, deeply incurious and not very bright

But who the fuck is Vance to start lecturing Zelensky? What experience or expertise qualifies him to weigh in like this?
Has he ever been shot at by the Russians? Has his family every been threatened by and invading army? Am viscerally furious about them both but Vance is just odious.

Yes, go and fight. That includes anyone of fighting age in your family.

He's the VP, doing his job.

The effectiveness of NATO propaganda is stunning

Never2many · 01/03/2025 05:02

I’m not convinced by any of it.

On the face of it that TV debacle today was laughably horrendous. But looking at it more closely it just all seems so staged. Reminds me of when Peers Morgan walked off the set when confronted.

The only reason why people here are so obsessed with Ukraine is because it’s Russia they’re up against. There have been far worse wars and still are across the world, but we overlook those with a “shame what’s happening in <insert country of choice” bu nobody suggests sending our children over there to fight.

How far do people think we should go? We’ve already given millions to Ukraine, do people genuinely think that we should be sending our troops over there to fight? The instant we do that it becomes a world war, is that really what people want?

Zelensky isn’t the hero people seem to make him out to be. He’s been haled a hero because of Russia, not because of what he’s done. Prior to the war he was already sought after for other crimes, Ukraine has an appalling human rights record and is considered to be one of the trafficking capitals of the world.

That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be seeking peace there or anywhere else, but people are looking at this in black and white and it’s not.
