To want to help Ukraine- is there ANYTHING we can do????

Helpforthosethatneedit · 28/02/2025 20:23

I am just so sad watching Zelensky. He's had his country invaded by Russia, fought for survival and now he's got Trump and Vance gaslighting him. Mumsnet, there's posts every day on here about this sort of behaviour, but usually it is happening in playgrounds. Wonderful advice is given. But this is not a playground. This is the world. How can we/ the little people help? I feel so so helpless. Please give ideas? Can we do something to support Ukraine and potentially change the future?

Aibu?

Yes- frankly, we, the little people have nothing we can do to help.
No- We need to fight to help Ukraine and keep Europe safe (and here's my idea....)

Your MPs have just invited Trump for a state visit so that tells you everything you need to know about where they stand.

What do you suggest our government does?

Not to defend Ukraine, but I absolutely would to defend my own country. I expect that’s how the Ukrainians feel, and I want to support them in doing so.

They are extremely patriotic. That extends to the refugees who have moved to the UK being patriotic too.

I got invited to a Ukrainian locals' tea party to celebrate Boris Johnson's birthday back when he was PM. Didn't even know it was his birthday tbh. I had to politely decline.

They were also crocheting dolls of him to sell to raise money for Ukraine in a Facebook group. The admin had to turn off commenting because a lot of the UK hosts were making comments about buying them to stick pins in.

Turn Trump’s Scottish golf course into a rifle range with Vance and Trump effigies as targets.

That was yesterday, and in Trump world everything can go off track in a moment. I don't blame Starmer or the government for that. They played their best cards at the time.

There's many of us who think that time will tell that Zelensky was an absolute fraud. It's fine to question the loss of life. It's fine to question Zelensky's motivation. Read the testimonies of the men, facing conscription in the Ukraine, who don't want this war.

Yeah, I'd like to see some reputable links supporting this smear. I'll wait.

I have thanked goodness several times today that it’s Kier Starmer we have leading us through this situation.

No doubt Rishi would also have taken his role seriously and done a decent job too. Boris, I am much less sure about, and just IMAGINE if we had Liz Truss at the helm. I shudder at the thought of that car crash.

I may have read that people are finding a strange need to take a shit on the course in various places.

if you gotta go…

If you're thinking of practical help, the best cost / outcome efficiency is donating not to larger multinational charities (especially the Red Cross in Ukraine are utterly useless), but to one of many smaller initiatives who would really appreciate even a tiny donation, or a banger of a car that just takes space. British Ukrainian Aid, Jeeps for Peace, Car4Ukraine etc etc, I can give you a dozen names easily - I am more involved on the cars / ambulances side, but there are charities doing all kinds of staff.
Even if you want to come and help make tea and cake at one of regular fundraising events that would be a massive help.

Other than that, spread the truth on social media and offline. Share, ask questions, don't forget. Even with this post you've already done something.

I agree. I donate to local volunteer groups in Kharkiv. Every penny/hryvnia goes towards supporting the Ukrainian defenders on the ground - and there are facebook photos to prove it.

Anyone who wants war is an idiot. But there aren't votes on the subject. Ukraine didn't ask Putin in. Take your appeasement elsewhere - the last time there was appeasement is CAUSED a world war. How about reading up on how that went???

spuddy4 · 28/02/2025 22:02

@zendeveloper I protested against the war in Afghanistan and lost a family member who fought for his country so you don't have to patronise me with a petition to sign. It's the same thing happening again, everyone wants our country to step up but as I've said before it will be a different story when your children come home in a coffin. I don't believe in war and never will, it's not the answer and innocent people keep on dying for rich men.

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 28/02/2025 22:03

Thsnk you' I've donated to the Red Cross. It's a drop in the ocean compared to what they need, but I felt I had to do something, however small, after today's events.

What do you think Ukraine should do?

potatopaws · 28/02/2025 22:06

If there’s one thing the British still hold dear, it’s fair play. And the vast majority of us, whatever our political stripe, can recognise bullying when we see it and are willing to call it out.

He may be. He certainly isn't an angel. But it's irrelevant. Putin marched into a sovereign country. They need, and are entitled, to defend themselves.

spuddy4 · 28/02/2025 22:08

@PandoraSox spend the billions they've been given on defence. It wasn't so long ago that the media were reporting that Russia suffered huge losses and were using old tanks and artillery but yet Ukraine still haven't come close to pushing them back despite all the money they've had. It does make you believe if the media reports about Russia are true but then you get called a conspiracy theorist for questioning anything.

I strongly suspect Russia is on it's knees, which is why Trump and Putin are so keen to push this along. Estonia have noted there are no tanks along their border any more as they have all gone to help on the Ukraine front. Russia aren't as equipped as they make out.
