It felt like two school bullies attacking the kid who is standing up for himself.

They really are scum. And neither of them would have staying in Kiev for a day. They would have been on the first fucking flight out.

Utterly shameful.

That's exactly how I felt. I actually cried watching the footage. It was absolutely horrifying.

Let’s hope most people won’t stoop to taking out their feelings on innocent visitors. A more mature way of dealing with it, is maybe to understand there are many sides to this war and everyone has their own opinion. Americans have stumped up an incredible 360 billion dollars to help Ukraine - so I’m not sure why you would wish to be rude to them.

Euproe’s economy is struggling enough without losing affluent US visitors 🙄

Edited

I haven’t been rude to innocent visitors, try reading and understanding what you’ve read 🥱

Inmydreams88 · 01/03/2025 09:11

What does this mean for the UK? I’m assuming if Putin is bold enough to attack a NATO country after Ukraine we will be a full scale war?

The BBC and the NY Times hsve been looking into this (again) over the last couple of dsys. The BBC investigation is on its website.

The Kiel Institute in Germany can account for $118B spent by the US and $130B spent by Europe. The latter accounts for both official EU spending and spending by individual European countries.

The US Department of Defense takes a wider view of American spending on Ukraine but according to the BBC website even they claim only $180B of American spending. No one seems to know how Trump roughly doubled that figure and he isn’t offering any explanation

Indeed. All figures available from US Government in actual fact (and that means an actual fact and not some loose appropriation of the word fact some PPs seem to be bandying about). And, even if spending was to include other support to Ukraine from the US prior to 2022, it would be another £69 Billion. Still over £100 Billion short of what is repeatedly, falsely, being claimed here. And, in terms of direct aid to Ukraine, less than the EU by about £20 Billion.

(apparently the false figures that were quoted originally are ‘not important’ now that they are demonstrably bull 😉)

It isn’t a bullying comment now is it 🙄. I’m simply passing on the view point and experiences of an American friend and colleague who lives in the U.K. It’s her experience not my actions or recommendations. But you carry on, twist away

And I'm saying that people in this country are generally not like this. Feel sorry that your friend experienced this, but thats the exception not the norm. Your statement indicated its going to be a problem, with 'many' getting the same reception. They won't.

Biscuitsnotcookies · 01/03/2025 09:21

You are focused on the wrong thing. Whether it is $360 billion or $180 billion is totally irrelevant, the US have undoubtedly contributed massively military aid to Ukraine. No one knows the exact numbers including you!
What is cast iron fact is this war needs to end, whatever the differences, and now the discussion is how we get there.

We all need a peace deal.

Okay then, I’ll tell her you said it won’t be a problem for her going forward, so it must be true. She’ll be so relieved 😌

Agree. Why do people think it's OK to just carry on throwing money into a bottomless pit rather than trying to broker a deal? Unfortunately unpalatable decisions will have to be made on both sides to end this war. Its stale mate currently. To continue blindly sending money will just carry on prolonging the war.

Notonthestairs · 01/03/2025 09:30

The US signed security guarantees for Ukraine. That's why they gave up their nuclear weapons - the invasion wouldn't have happened if Ukraine had been able to retain them.

America is perfectly capable of applying further economic pressure on Russia to reach a peace deal.

Trump is too busy cosying up to Putin to do so.

Why isn’t Trump turning his aggression on the actual aggressor here? Why is he praising Putin? This needs a solid wall approach as afar as Putin is concerned.

Pissing on prostitutes and the fact all his US real estate deals were funded with Russian crime proceeds.

But that’s just the stuff we know! There must be something else

Walkaround · 01/03/2025 09:32

Biscuitsnotcookies · 01/03/2025 08:41

You can’t discredit a publicly known figure my friend without providing proof. The exact figure is neither here or there, the fact remains that without the US Ukraine would have lost within hours.

🤣Only Trump is allowed to discredit publicly known figures without providing proof. And obviously, it’s a “fact” that Ukraine would have lost any war within hours without the US. Let’s all stick with “facts,” and then subsequently argue that actual facts are not important, as who actually cares about trivial details like whether a country that has been invaded “started it,” and whether or not the US has spent $360billion on prolonging it? I mean, as another example of this type of behaviour, we all know the silly woman who answered back before her partner beat the shit out of her started it, don’t we? Same applies here - the facts are what the bully tells you they are.

I think the point is Trump and the rest of us wants it to end to avoid escalation into a world war 3, but there are limited options. He prob knows that putin is the more volatile of the two. Neither side are going to end it, and whilst Ukraine are not the aggressors, something needs to be worked out. Otherwise it will continue as is, with many more deaths.

TemporaryPosition · 01/03/2025 09:43

Walkaround · 01/03/2025 07:24

As keen as who? Trump appears to thrive on conflict. He’s even advertised it on TV, so the world can see how much he loves it. America First! Canada the 51st State! “Take back” the Panama canal!

People should pay closer to attention to people's actions. Not their words.

bombastix · 01/03/2025 09:46

The Russia media invited by "accident".

This deal for critical minerals has been agreed with Putin already.

Putin wants Zelenskyy out. So this is how the US does it.

readytotumble · 01/03/2025 09:48

What is wrong with these f*ckwits
In the White House?

An absolute disgrace. No respect for anyone, self-serving imbeciles who think they're in bed with Putin, who in turn must be thoroughly delighted with all this division in the West.

I've lost well over £10k off my pension pot overnight, but it's looking like that could be the least of our problems the way things are going.

Absolutely terrifying. Did Trump and Vance just start WW3 or am I wrong?

While you're trying to scaremonger amongst the American population that the UK won't welcome them coming here, by generalisation about the 'many' who will be ostracised by us. They really won't. Only the idiots amongst us might take that path, but I like to think that whilst there are many idiots walking amongst us, there's not enough to cause a problem to an American family on a two week holiday to London.

And the point is that the war needs to END. So what has or hasn’t been spent is largely irrelevant.

It's not irrelevant. Neither is the fact the trump keeps on lying about the terms of the money been given by Europe v USA

He's using all this rhetoric to make voters think they have been ripped off and deserve eternal gratitude , even implying some of the money has disappeared and some idiots believe Z has a massive house in Florida as a result ffs.
It's all about the lies and misinformation so they can capitulate to Russia and take the minerals

TemporaryPosition · 01/03/2025 10:08

I strongly suspect the vast majority of people here have only seen the clip cropped by the BBC. Not the broader context

Yes. Trump is negotiating more in the manner of a hostile business move rather than seeking a diplomatic solution. I feel that even before Zelensky had set foot in the US, he had informed Trump that he would not be signing the deal under the terms offered. Who could blame him either as this deal does not seem to offer any guaranty of peace to Ukraine. Trump and Vance then set about the humiliation on live tv.

https://www.cnn.com/2025/02/26/europe/ukraine-us-mineral-resources-deal-explained-intl-latam/index.html
Asked on Tuesday what Ukraine would receive in the mineral deal, Trump said: “$350 billion and lots of equipment, military equipment, and the right to fight on,” repeating a false claim he has made in the past. According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, a German think tank that closely tracks wartime aid to Ukraine, Washington had committed a total of about $124 billion in aid to Ukraine
This doesn't sound like an end to the conflict when Trump says the deal would allow Ukraine to fight on?

Lyannaa · 01/03/2025 10:21

Yes. Trump is negotiating more in the manner of a hostile business move rather than seeking a diplomatic solution

Which is what happens when failed businessmen become politicians and leaders of a country that affects many others(!)

It’s utter madness he was ever POTUS in the first term.

poetryandwine · 01/03/2025 10:25

I hope you mean the broader context wherein Ukraine was unilaterally invaded by an aggressor; wherein all of Europe has since expressed solidarity with Ukraine; wherein Trump is known to be Putin’s pal if not more, etc.
