Easyjet flight attendant ( seat related).

Can I preceded this by saying that I have always paid for my seat when travelling with my dc up until a certain age and that I have also often changed seats to accommodate young families? However yesterday on an Easyjet flight, we were asked to swop our paid for seat to the seat behind, with no window so that the woman’s child could see out. No medical reason- just she wanted a view.
I said no, I was fine thanks. About five minutes later another attendant arrived, demanded our boarding passes, scrutinized them furiously. And then began to lambast me because I hadn’t swopped with the woman. She said they had been going to reward us with a free meal but now, because of our lack of humanity, would not. This was at the top of her voice. I said, reasonably, that I had paid for my seat and I would be sitting in it but by this stage she and her colleague were speaking loudly and gesticulating in Portuguese.
Is this acceptable? Surely the airline must accept responsibility for putting this family in this seat( right at the back of the plane. ) How did I become the bad guy in this? It’s still rankling today.

The row at the back is the worst place to be. Booking that is mad unless it was the only two seats still left together. As might be what the op found. Both are dreadful seats! You have to accept not all seats have windows and you can make some effort to find out. Right at the back is often not a window seat. Even in business on better airlines you are not always by a window. You can use seat guru to check though. No one must swap seats though.

As long as you can prove it
Please don't cause an issue for someone doing their job if there is any doubt about what happened.
And even if it did happen as you say so what? Somebody upset you a bit, I am sure you will be ok

Are you by any chance Portuguese cabin crew ?

pinkhousesarebest · 28/02/2025 16:37

Sama😂
To make it clear, no food of any description was offered in the first instance. It would not have swayed me anyway. All I bloody wanted was a nice peaceful flight with my dh with nobody to think of but myself ( recent empty nesters). Think why I find this so infuriating- none of this was of our making.

Oh no, busted

I can't see why you posted this. You don't need anyone to validate your actions.

Hardly the point that the OP will be OK!! She paid for her seat and was entitled to use it. You're not the cabin crew by any chance, are you?

TizerorFizz · 28/02/2025 16:54

If you book a seat in a theatre you are entitled to sit in it. I found people in my seats at a local theatre once (for opera) and they thought it didn’t matter. Neither did the theatre attendant nearby. I had to find a manager to get our seats back. These people just wanted to sit in a different configuration. It was DMs 90th birthday so not negotiable for us - and why should it be?I chose the row and seats for DM to be comfortable. People are not entitled to want your booked seats.

Having said that, the number of people who sit in the wrong seats in theatres always amazes me. Reading letters and numbers seems challenging to some.

AnonymousBleep · 28/02/2025 16:55

Why didn't they just ask someone else to swap with the woman and child rather than just berating you?

Really unprofessional behaviour from the attendant and you are right to complain.

MN would be tumbleweed if people applied that principle generally.

@TizerorFizz Well the OP booked the second to back! I wouldn't expect the average lay person to know that they may not get a window unless it's clearly marked on the seat plan.

My work means that on certain flights I get to choose my seat ahead of travel for free, if I want to. I've chosen the back row before when I know they'll be loading / unloading from both back and front of the aircraft, so a quick disembark and nobody kicking my seat.

Kicking the back of my seat does it for me. Why do people think that is OK.

amicisimma · 28/02/2025 17:06

A free Easyjet meal you say? You dodged a bullet there!

"Side comment, but Aer Lingus staff are the nicest ever!" I was on a Ryanair flight recently and the cabin crew assured us that they were the nicest crew flying. Shurely shome mishtake!

As another aside, a lot of people on the Ryanair flight must have decided not to pay to sit together as several couples (including us, which I prefer) were split up. But everyone simply sorted it out amongst themselves once we were airborne.

They cannot remove a passenger who has paid for a specific seat from the flight. There is a contract in place. There’s no reason to threaten removal because someone else wants something - your seat!

In the OP’s situation I would be livid and yes, I would complain. You don’t have to give up a paid in advance seat unless you are unsafe in it or cannot open the escape hatch. What is the point of paying if others just demand the seat?

The moral of the story is: don’t fly with EJ. They made a fuss about DD having a slightly over stuffed single bag. Very very marginal. She made the huge mistake of being one of the last in the queue as she doesn't like pushing and shoving. They said they would leave her behind unless she coughed up £40. This was after letting on numerous huge bags belonging to grossly overweight passengers. They just pick on people. So no more EJ in this house.

This is the same CF behaviour as the seats. EJ have a very clear baggage policy; you get to take a small bag for free, they give exact maximum dimensions so if your bag is marginally over you have to pay. The people with the larger bags that you spotted had almost certainly paid for theirs, and yes, it is often around the £40 mark. Totally on you!

On the whole I find Easy Jet to be a good airline.

YANBU OP.

Though I am reminded of a recent trip when DS7, DH and I had been allocated 3 seats - 2 on one row and one a row in front. I intended for DS to sit with one parent and the other parent to sit alone. Except that we’d ended up with the two seats together on an emergency exit row, no children allowed. So DS was on his own.

The person sat next to DS refused to swop her aisle seat for the aisle seat one row back so one of us could sit with DS. Despite the fact she was turning down a seat with oodles of extra leg room and without a fidgety 7yo next to her. Her loss - DH and I rather enjoyed 2 hours of peace with our legs outstretched!

TheignT · 28/02/2025 12:36

I like kids. I used to be a kid and lots of people were kind to me and I pass it on.

For free, even if you paid an extra 80 for the seat. Sure

JANEY205 · 28/02/2025 17:34

Complain!!!! I buy my kids seats when we fly so the can be in the window and next to us. I’d never ask someone to move and livid about this.

Hoppinggreen · 28/02/2025 16:37

Just ignore @Hoppinggreen OP! Complain. The airline were extremely unprofessional and their staff need further training, simple as.

LovelyLeitrim · 28/02/2025 17:39

An easy jet free meal…..

I’m not hungry thanks!

MikeRafone · 28/02/2025 17:54

do you think one of the cabin crew knew the child and person travelling?

ColourBlueColourPurple · 28/02/2025 17:57

I would definitely complain about that.

TheNumberfaker · 28/02/2025 18:05

I just wish all airlines would display the total price with seat choice first and then offer you a discount if you’re prepared to sit anywhere and be split up. But NOT allow that discount for bookings with children, so you have to sit with your children. Then there would never be this kind of situation.
child needs to sit with parent = yes of course
child needs to see out of the window = don’t be silly

coldcallerbaiter · 28/02/2025 18:11

OP was right and if it is true, stewardess outrageous

I don’t understand about the free meal thing. Was this a longer haul flight?
EasyJet meals aren’t the foil topped crap you get included on some flights They have quite reasonable baguettes etc. some are cold, some are toasties, they charge for them on board and are optional I never buy them as I prefer fresh and less bready, less processed food. Hot food on planes is smelly and antisocial, I feel even more airsick.

coldcallerbaiter · 28/02/2025 18:18

AnonymousBleep · 28/02/2025 16:55

They should not ask anyone, it puts people in a difficult position for nothing. Window seats can be booked ahead of time. You can choose your seat and pay extra to choose. I like children but this isn’t reasonable or necessary.

coldcallerbaiter · 28/02/2025 18:21

beAsensible1 · 28/02/2025 15:35

they do, and when they heat them up the entire plane stinks of old ham.

i wouldn't take one for free .

I know hot meals should be banned on all airlines even the better ones. Plus they spread airborne allergens with no escape.

Are you for real?! Could YOU treat customers/clients that way in your job and get away with it?! Shouting at a customer because they wouldn't move from the seats they paid for means that this person/these people should NOT be doing the job they are in, and if they lose their job/s as a result, tough. Consequence of their own actions.
As for the family who were demanding other people moved so that their little prince/princess could see out of the window, they need to start explaining to their child that you can't stamp your feet and beat your fists to get what you want in life.

TizerorFizz · 28/02/2025 18:38

EJ and others allow much bigger bags on until they get nearer the end of the queue. Then they look for 1/2 inch over in a front pocket. DD had stuffed something in it at the last moment. DD was 18 at the time and on her own. They do not apply rules fairly. They cherry pick. They threaten. No other person was threatened or made to feel uncomfortable. Just an 18 year old on her own. Not a 15 stone rugby type man! They pick on weaker looking people. The rucksacks carried on, according to dd l, were well over any size plus other bags as well! Anyway they don’t need our custom. They are just cheap shit and I can afford to fly better, so I do.
