Easyjet flight attendant ( seat related).

Can I preceded this by saying that I have always paid for my seat when travelling with my dc up until a certain age and that I have also often changed seats to accommodate young families? However yesterday on an Easyjet flight, we were asked to swop our paid for seat to the seat behind, with no window so that the woman’s child could see out. No medical reason- just she wanted a view.
I said no, I was fine thanks. About five minutes later another attendant arrived, demanded our boarding passes, scrutinized them furiously. And then began to lambast me because I hadn’t swopped with the woman. She said they had been going to reward us with a free meal but now, because of our lack of humanity, would not. This was at the top of her voice. I said, reasonably, that I had paid for my seat and I would be sitting in it but by this stage she and her colleague were speaking loudly and gesticulating in Portuguese.
Is this acceptable? Surely the airline must accept responsibility for putting this family in this seat( right at the back of the plane. ) How did I become the bad guy in this? It’s still rankling today.

I’m cabin crew for another British airline and whilst I would always ask, it would entirely be up to the person I was asking and if they said no for whatever reason then it’s a no. If you want a certain seat then book and pay for it yourself.

Sapphireblueeyes · 02/03/2025 18:26

REWARD you with an EasyJet dinner 😂

Butterfly292828 · 02/03/2025 19:00

Only told you afterwards that a free meal was involved 🙄

They serve pizza, chips, curries. I’d call those meals even though no bread roll in a packet.

They don't serve that, I've never seen it! They don't have the methodology to cook those things on board! I've flown about 135 flights and not once have I seen chips or pizzas being on offer. Some long haul airlines do have curry type meals.

And if your flight is at lunchtime and they’re coming round with a random assortment of food at that time, then logically that would be lunch wouldn’t it ? Details are important, nitpicking isn’t.

I think it's confusing statement about easyJet refusing to serve them lunch on badness, there is no included lunch service, you ask for something from the snack trolley if you want to buy it, you have to ask for it if you want it.

Looks very much like lunch to
me!

But its a snack trolley that costs extra not a lunch service that is included in everyone's fare.

The attendants were rude but I'd have let a kid have the window seat. If I book seats it's because I want to be seated with whoever I'm travelling with. I think sitting in the last row is a bonus as I always seem to sit in front of someone who kicks the seat, not just on planes.

But that's a precedent that's bad and should never be set. If many parents start demanding free moves to window seats that belong to other people it would cause chaos! People need to sit down and get bags in the overhead bins as fast as possible so take off slots aren't missed! We can't sit for hours waiting for the off because mummies and daddy want to get on the plane and start bullying everyone out of allocated seating!

It certainly would not work on the flight I've just done, I few home from Grenada overnight last night which included doing a stop at St Lucia to drop people off and load up the Gatwick bound passengers. When passengers get off at St Lucia the crew have to do a bag check on what remains in the overhead bins which means you can't just move to another part of the plane to appease someone demanding a free window seat because you need to clarify which bags are yours as the crew member comes along. Those sorts of flights are long and arduous enough and should be kept free of arguments and people demanding free seats changes! It also makes life awkward disembarking of you've been moved away from your overhead bin luggage and have to fight through the crowds that jump in the aisle the second the seatbelt sign goes off.

FormidableMizzP · 02/03/2025 21:29

Nope. If it's my seat nr on my boarding pass, I ain't moving. EJ are the pits.
I paid to book seats for me and my kids to be on the same flight as my husband from his work trip, sitting at the front of the plane. They let me pay for those seats BUT when we got on the plane the flight attendants said children under 16 weren't allowed at the front and made us swap with the people behind who hadn't booked their seats.

Make a complaint about this to easy jet. How rude were the staff! You are meant to be in the correct seat that's why even if you don't pre-book they put your name on the seat number at check in, it's for safety reasons. You paid, the other family didn't hopefully they will learn in future. I always pay my last flight a guy was in my seat I sucked it up but then I was in another guys seat he came along saying your in my seat I had to say to the other guy sorry I think your in my seat! But mine was window. It's wrong because just like that everyone starts having to ask for their seat.

pinkhousesarebest · 02/03/2025 23:06

Just home. There is a trolley of food that goes around - nearly took a picture for the naysayers. This is obviously the carrot that she referred to after the event. I have complained and will update if I hear anything back - I am pretty dubious about it though!

No, you are not being unreasonable.

Yes, they can ask you if you wouldnt mind moving, but if you decline, that should be the end of the story, realistically.

When do people learn that if you want a particular seats etc, then make sure you pay to secure it?

I have travelled with kids before and always make sure I pay a bit extra so we can all sit together.

@ellie09 has this spot on, not unreasonable for them to ask, not unreasonable for you to say no thank you. Now you have landed, I would simply move on. I only say this because another budget airline managed to knock me out by not closing the overhead lockers properly and somebodies heavy laptop fell out on my head corner first, when travelling with young children. The staff were great in the air, bringing ice packs and bandages, and the poor people whose laptop it was were beside themselves and voluntarily swapped numbers at the end of the flight. My children were really upset. I got checked out when landed, and then got to our holiday accom in a taxi, which was not the plan, but became the plan. I later wrote to complain, and got short shrift, and given I was "recovered from the situation" I left it at that. Taking on these cheap airlines is really hard work, and will cause you more stress than the original stressful situation, if you know what I mean. Hope this helps x

TheGoogleMum · 02/03/2025 23:49

They can't make you pay for seats then be hostile when you want to actually sit in the seats youve paid for! If they didn't monetise booking seats maybe this would have turned out differently. Maybe.

The OP stated that easyJet refused to serve them during lunch service as though they expected a free meal to be dished out to everyone like on a long haul flight, how could they be refused a non existent general lunch service, that statement never made sense, they were not due to be served anything unless they asked to buy anything from the snack trolley.

What she actually said was
"She also missed us out when serving lunch - skipped our seat completely. Very, very unprofessional conduct."
That could mean they didnt ask her if she wanted to buy lunch or a snack

"There were snacks being served. No-one asked us did we want one ( we obviously didn’t). Whether people were paying for them or not, I don’t know."

As said previously EasyJet serve a paid for lunch, not a free lunch. It makes perfect sense if you actually know what you are talking about.

She has a right to complain about their attitude towards them as paying customers and the fact they made them feel very uncomfortable.
To let the airline know their standards of care and attitude was wring and hold the persons accountable just for the attitude.

We had similar though not quite so bad with Virgin. 11 hour flight so we booked and paid for our selected 3 seats in a row plus 1 across the aisle so just an aisle in between. This was for me, DH and DC17 and 16. DH sat in the seat across the aisle but we were still able to chat and pass snacks between us.
Just before take off a man asked if DH would swap to sit 2 rows behind so he could sit with this partner who was the other side of DH. DH declined and pointed to us and said that’s my family. The man then tried the guy next to himself to see if the partner could move 2 rows back and the guy sit next to DH. Guy says no, he was also next to family.
Air steward was summonsed by the man who told her he wanted to sit with his GF and could she try and sort it. Air steward asked DH if he would swap. DH reiterated No. She then asked the guy 2 rows back who also refused.
She then reappeared next to DH with her hands on her hips and said loudly “I guess you’re still refusing to move?” DH confirmed he was staying next to his family in the seat he’d paid for. She rolled her eyes at DH then apologised to the couple and said she was very sorry and there was nothing she could do but she’d try and find 2 seats together after take off.
It simply doesn’t make sense that DH should travel away from his family, giving up his paid selected seat choice, just to benefit a couple who hadn’t pre paid for seat choices.
No sense in why the air steward thought the couple should trump the family who’d paid for seats together!

Oops I mean British Airways not Virgin! Not sure how to edit.
