Easyjet flight attendant ( seat related).

Can I preceded this by saying that I have always paid for my seat when travelling with my dc up until a certain age and that I have also often changed seats to accommodate young families? However yesterday on an Easyjet flight, we were asked to swop our paid for seat to the seat behind, with no window so that the woman’s child could see out. No medical reason- just she wanted a view.
I said no, I was fine thanks. About five minutes later another attendant arrived, demanded our boarding passes, scrutinized them furiously. And then began to lambast me because I hadn’t swopped with the woman. She said they had been going to reward us with a free meal but now, because of our lack of humanity, would not. This was at the top of her voice. I said, reasonably, that I had paid for my seat and I would be sitting in it but by this stage she and her colleague were speaking loudly and gesticulating in Portuguese.
Is this acceptable? Surely the airline must accept responsibility for putting this family in this seat( right at the back of the plane. ) How did I become the bad guy in this? It’s still rankling today.

I would complain and if you know their names then add that. EasyJet would charge you for breathing air and using the toilet if they could so don’t feel bad

AshKeys · 28/02/2025 15:34

I think it is bad practice not to require airlines to book children next to an adult they are travelling with. In case of an accident this could significantly slow exit from the plane and every second could cost lives.

It should also be standard practice to issue an immediate refund for anyone who paid for a seat they didn’t receive for whatever reason.

EasyJet don’t do meals.

they do, and when they heat them up the entire plane stinks of old ham.

i wouldn't take one for free .

UnemployedNotRetired · 28/02/2025 15:41

Worse things do happen!
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5y44z9z67po

Mitchell Ring and Jennifer Colin, who were travelling to Venice for a holiday, said the cabin crew had placed the dead woman, covered in blankets, next to Mr Ring for the last four hours of a 14-hour flight.

Baninarama · 28/02/2025 15:43

I'd pay extra to sit next to a dead person - no manspreading, watching videos without headphones and other in-flight horrors.

Mamabear487 · 28/02/2025 15:45

They are a joke. We went to visit our wedding venue abroad and paid for our seats together then they moved my partner to the other end of the plane! He still say where we paid for but they were so rude demanding he moved otherwise he would be removed from the plane. They went from 0-100 when we were talking sensibly!!

Omgblueskys · 28/02/2025 15:50

Some people pay but others who don't pay will be allocated a seat when checking in, so lady and child would of already been allocated a seat, but obviously thought they could be moved to a better seat, am I right !!

Lovemycat2023 · 28/02/2025 15:53

The seats at the back without windows are horribly claustrophobic, I wouldn’t switch to one whether I’d paid for my seat or not.

pinkhousesarebest · 28/02/2025 15:56

Just to clarify a bit.
The woman did ask the first flight attendant who asked us to move. When we looked a bit confused, she then said it doesn’t matter. The first flight attendant then spoke very sharply to the woman saying you asked me to ask them and now you say it’s ok? Which is it? Anyway, I said no, we preferred to stay in our paid for seat, my dh turned around and said sorry. As far as we were concerned it was over. Until flight attendant 2 rocked up demanding both our boarding passes and then rounded in us for our unkindness.

Mamabear this is horrific!

They cannot remove a passenger who has paid for a specific seat from the flight. There is a contract in place. There’s no reason to threaten removal because someone else wants something - your seat!

In the OP’s situation I would be livid and yes, I would complain. You don’t have to give up a paid in advance seat unless you are unsafe in it or cannot open the escape hatch. What is the point of paying if others just demand the seat?

The moral of the story is: don’t fly with EJ. They made a fuss about DD having a slightly over stuffed single bag. Very very marginal. She made the huge mistake of being one of the last in the queue as she doesn't like pushing and shoving. They said they would leave her behind unless she coughed up £40. This was after letting on numerous huge bags belonging to grossly overweight passengers. They just pick on people. So no more EJ in this house.

pinkhousesarebest · 28/02/2025 16:00

I do know both their names and I have emailed Easyjet . I am already worrying about the return journey in case we are on some black list and end up being jettisoned over Spain

@BobbyBiscuits @Meeesh @Omgblueskys

Why are you assuming the parent hasn't paid to select seats? They may well have paid for the seats reasonably expecting the seat closest to the aircraft wall to have a window, and then boarded and found that due to the layout of the seat rows it didn't. Depending on the type of aircraft and the configuration not every single row will have its own clear view of a window, especially if it's an older aircraft retrofitted with new slimmer seats that allow for an extra row or two.

Personally if that was the case and a small excited child expecting a window seat was sad not to have one then I'd have swapped regardless if I'd paid. I know what clouds look like well enough.

Oh op you are right to complain you haven't done anything wrong, you wasn't rude unlike the two members of staff, yet made uncomfortable by them

EmmaMaria · 28/02/2025 16:07

I would complain. And I wouldn't have given up my seat either.

MounjaroOnMyMind · 28/02/2025 16:13

That's disgraceful behaviour on their part, made even worse by them not asking if you wanted any food. I would definitely make a complaint about it. Enjoy Lisbon - I'd love to go there.

itsgettingweird · 28/02/2025 16:13

My response would have been "if I wanted a meal I'd have booked and paid for one. But as it is I wanted this seat so booked and paid for that. Why hasn't this lady who booked and paid for a window seat been given one?"

The only answer they can give them is to admit that she didn't!

Izzabellasasperella · 28/02/2025 16:16

We are flying later in the year. One of our party has never flown before ( not a child) so we have booked and paid for a window seat for them.
Absolutely no way will we give up that seat.. Well done op for saying no.
In your shoes I would complain to the airline, no one should be made to feel uncomfortable in this situation.

EasyJet don’t do meals.

Im flying Easyjet on Saturday
from my booking

Option for

£10.00 Food And Drink Voucher For £8.00

TizerorFizz · 28/02/2025 16:17

@CheeseWisely In that case it’s just bad luck isn’t it? You cannot expect to swap because you made a mistake. Most EJ flights will state the aircraft but booking at the back is the worst seat anyway! They just wanted an upgrade so to speak. Who books the back?

@pinkhousesarebest I would not worry as you probably won’t get the same crew. Stand your ground but choose another airline next time. Don’t spend your money with EJ.

Iamallowedtodisagreewithyou · 28/02/2025 10:51

You know they weren't really going to reward you with a free meal don't you? She would have offered the incentive before if she was going to. Instead, she just said that to be spiteful, on top of everything else she did.

I wouldn't eat an Easyjet meal if they paid me, never mind eat it for free.

YANBU.

I've had airline food in my life. They'd be better off saying, "If you switch your seat, we won't put our disgusting food in front of you."

The only decent food I've ever had on a flight was a quick a.m. one to Chicago. You got juice, coffee or tea and a beautiful cinnamon roll.

@TizerorFizz Well the OP booked the second to back! I wouldn't expect the average lay person to know that they may not get a window unless it's clearly marked on the seat plan.

My work means that on certain flights I get to choose my seat ahead of travel for free, if I want to. I've chosen the back row before when I know they'll be loading / unloading from both back and front of the aircraft, so a quick disembark and nobody kicking my seat.

samarrange · 28/02/2025 16:24

To everyone saying that the food on Easyjet is crap, I thoroughly recommend their mezze box, which is genuinely delicious. There's a review of it here.
