Woman 19 dies in dog attack in Bristol

Apologies if there’s already a thread on this, but how many more lives have to be taken in these horrific attacks before the Government admit that the current measures are failing. It surely has come to the point now that all XL Bullies should be euthanised.

Whilst i agree these XL dogs should all be culled, it will not stop the criminal fraternity using dogs as a weapon or back street breeders...

If we want to get to the root cause, we need licensing, enforcement, training and insurance.. the licence needs to be v expensive, certainly more than £200 and failure to have a licence leading to a criminal conviction & loss of the dog... which would put it all on par with owning a shotgun.

The licence fee would pay for enforcement, without which, all the laws in the world are pointless.

But insurance is no good to a dead person.
If they were all to euthanised then any XL bully looking dog would be known to be illegal. Couldn’t ever go out, couldn’t be treated by a vet.
I agree with you on dog licences for all dogs.

Didntask · 27/02/2025 16:59

Yanbu OP. They're mutant and should all be euthanized, no matter how 'soft' they are. I will NEVER understand the psyche of anyone who would choose these abominations as a pet. Either sheer stupidity, ignorance or arrogance. And I say all that as an ardent animal lover prone to rescuing all waifs and strays.

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 27/02/2025 17:00

I love that someone in the article said the dog was fine with women but wasn't fond of men. Uh, the person the dog killed was a woman. Geez Louise

Mytholmroyd · 27/02/2025 17:04

I'd rather take my chances with a bear (a black one not a polar bear of course!)

bombastix · 27/02/2025 17:06

If you regard these things as living weapons then you can ban them and put people in prison for taking one out in public. Much like a knife or a gun.

OonaStubbs · 27/02/2025 17:08

It is time to ban the keeping of dogs as pets. We don't let people keep lions or tigers or wolves, so why dogs?

greyeyedwonder · 27/02/2025 15:00

Oh for god sake all I said was that he was a well behaved trained dog! His owner is a police dog trainer and very experienced! He's muzzled when he goes out and never off his leash.
I didn't say he didn't have the potential to turn, all dogs do and yes their sheer size and power make it impossible to do anything if they do.
Years ago it was the rotty, then the staffy, now it's the XL bully, and in a few years time it'll be another breed.

I'm also a police dog handler. I assume the officer you refer to got it from an incident/being given up for adoption as to buy it would mean he lost his job.
And yes quite rightly it's muzzled and on lead, you do know by law it has to be right?

I've probably met hundreds of xl's now and all I'll say is I'm glad I'm not your mates Sgt.

Wolfiefan · 27/02/2025 17:12

Er @OonaStubbs stop frothing. Dogs are not a wild animal. What needs banning is the unregulated breeding and owning. We need to crack down on unscrupulous breeders churning out dogs with health or behavioural issues. And stop anyone being able to buy a pet on the internet and bring it home with no sense of whether they can meet its needs and will actually work to become a responsible dog owner.

UrsulasHerbBag · 27/02/2025 17:13

They are frightening animals and they should be banned. Not only are we reading about yet another vicious terrifying attack resulting in death there are countless other dogs and cats killed by these monsters that are not hitting the news. Imagine walking your daft old spaniel in your local area and him being ripped apart on front of your eyes. Bloody awful.

Hoppinggreen · 27/02/2025 14:58

Well we don't even need to click to see it wasn't a Golden Retriever in Harrogate do we?
It might be the same type of dogs but more often its the same type of owner.
Whatever happened though its no way to die, the poor woman must have been terrified and my thoughts are with her family

Yep. The owners are always the same breed…

MrsKeats · 27/02/2025 17:14

greyeyedwonder · 27/02/2025 14:31

My friend is a XL bully owner, her DH is a police dog trainer. In the right hands these dogs are no different to any other large breed. Yeah I know not all are owned by people with his experience and capabilities. He's a much loved, well behaved family pet and very affectionate dog who tends to drool on you a lot.

Absolute rubbish

littlemissalwaystired · 27/02/2025 17:16

I'm a midwife and was made to attend a home birth with an XL bully in the house. I was genuinely so fearful.

BansheeOfTheSouth · 27/02/2025 17:17

Fairyliz · 27/02/2025 15:06

Pity we can’t do the same with the owners.

At the very least compulsory neutering.

Can't fix stupid unfortunately.

Perchta · 27/02/2025 17:18

We saw one of these XL Bullies and few weeks ago when visiting a cemetery. The dog was muzzled, but on a long leash, and this was a very narrow path. Everyone was giving them a wide berth, and this meant having to walk on the boggy ground around the headstones to pass them safely. You could see the smirks on the couple's faces. They were enjoying the caution their dog was instilling upon those walking by. Just about sums up the kind of people who own these things.

Boredofbeinganadult · 27/02/2025 17:18

Poor woman 😢

subfertilepcos · 27/02/2025 17:18

I don’t understand why anyone would want one of these dogs? They aren’t working dogs, they don’t have good temperaments (or if they do you can’t trust that!) , they look terrifying (or is that why some people want them for some kind of status but that doesn’t explain the thick parents who have them as family dogs you’d have to be an utter moron to let one anywhere near a child).

They all need to be PTS. They are a huge mistake and shouldn’t be allowed to continue existing.

Stresshead84x · 27/02/2025 17:19

Derbee · 27/02/2025 14:35

I think they should all be euthanised. One of the biggest problems (see above post) is people who think their XL Bully is different. They think they’re well trained/soft/friendly/part of the family etc. Until they do what they are bred to do/be and they are suddenly unrecognisable from the beloved dog that their owner thought was different.

The danger is twofold. The dogs, and the person who is in denial about what these dogs actually are at their core.

Edited

I read something a while ago about how the issue with them is similar to cocker spaniel rage syndrome (although a lot worse because cocker spaniels are small dogs) and thats why people will say they are the nicest dog in the world until suddenly they aren't- and unfortunately once they turn there's nothing you can do about it. It all goes back to a small number of dogs in america who were massively inbred due to their size/temperament and then that bloodline was introduced here.

You should have refused - the more people and especially professionals that make their feelings clear the more likely it is that something will be done . How sad that a baby is born into a home full
of such danger

CMTwb1941 · 27/02/2025 17:20

So many people tell you that their own dog is “ as gentle as a lamb” and another favourite ,” a great bid softie ! ) but those people forget f
that he’s a DOG .

What is your opinion of XL ‘s as a police dog handler?
An XLB before muzzle law came into being tried to attack my pet dog and a friend’s dog
I had no option but to let them both off lead to take their chances

My friends dog scarpered , but mine wanted to stay close to me , and I grabbed it’s ( XLB) collar

Tbe strength of the bloody thing

I am tall and weigh 60 kilos and this thing took off dragging me-

It’s idiot owner appeared afraid of it

Tbis was shortly before people began to be killed by them.

The dog warden found my friend’s dog and Warden said I’d done the right thing to release mine as they were more agile and could escape
Warden didn’t fine me for a loose dog either - he returned friend’s dog to my house.

He took XLs off the street when people pretended to “ find” one as he said he wanted them out of the community as too dangerous and unpredictable.

Comparitively chihuahuas or bichon frisé aren't remotely similar to lions, tigers or wolves. Dogs are domesticated, wild animals are not.

Poppymeldrum · 27/02/2025 17:24

I have a friend who owns a staffie (I say friend-ive not spoken to her for ages)
Lovely animal,thick as pigshit-just like it's owner
She's the type of owner who feeds him sweets, cakes,Maccies milkshakes etc,he still has his bollocks and she refuses to train him (he's also never seen a vet in his life)
He scares me-all he needs is a rotting tooth or some other ailment where he's in pain, and he could tear your face off
He's nipped me a few times in play and broken my skin
She's in love with these xl bullys and (until the ban) was planning on getting one when this dog dies-if she managed to get one,it would keep its knackers as 'I love the sight of them' (god only knows whats nice about a dogs bollocks)
She's all 'lovely dogs,it's the owner not the dog'
She's 7 stone if you tipped a bucket of water over her-she has no chance at controlling the dog she's got,let alone one of these dogs (he takes her for a walk-ive seen it)
We saw an unmuzzled one in the street about a year ago,she wandered over to fuss it and it stared at me-it seemed to have no soul but was staring into mine-i know that doesn't make sense but it's the only way I can put it
Some people shouldn't have animals, and those beasts need to be pts

subfertilepcos · 27/02/2025 17:24

I saw on a local fb recently someone had found an XL and all the comments :

’aww what a gorgeous boy’

’ill take him in if you can’t find the owners’

’look at those beautiful eyes’

‘Poor baby must be so scared well done for helping him’

etc etc. for a start the person who had found this dog had got it unmuzzled in their car (???) didn’t seem to be worried at all and it seems everyone was oblivious to any potential danger ?

Did they lock it well away? (Although how secure that would be, I wouldn't like to depend on ...)

What would be the management position if you refused?

I would actually think that this kind of circumstance when you're treating someone who is going to be stressed and in pain must surely be very dangerous with any protective breed in the house.

Stresshead84x · 27/02/2025 17:25

Oh I think this is what i read. Terrifying
