Woman 19 dies in dog attack in Bristol

Apologies if there’s already a thread on this, but how many more lives have to be taken in these horrific attacks before the Government admit that the current measures are failing. It surely has come to the point now that all XL Bullies should be euthanised.

@HeadacheEarthquake I was replying to a rabid dog hater post who was spouting rubbish.

There's a big difference between highly trained working dogs and pets.

Not, apparently, for some of the more vehemently-inclined posters. Guide dogs still poo. Hearing dogs can still be yappy. They are all just dogs. You can't say 'ban dogs, nobody should have a dog, they're all stinky and should be 'confined to houses and gardens, oh, except for any dog that's a working dog.'

Even working dogs can be little buggers.

@BattIestar you sound unhinged

Totally. That level of nonsensical bile really does imply some level of mental ill health.

It's not like all wildlife isn't out there pissing and shitting and making noise is it! Grin

BattIestar · 03/03/2025 18:22

I am perfectly fine with nature. I object to piles of dog shit on the pavements, and doggy piss up lamposts, so much that there are little puddles all over the place. Normal animals are welcome. Human-imposed dogs, not.
I cannot believe they are in restaurants and cafes, shops, schools. That is madness. Our obsession with dogs is what's gotten us into this mess of people being mauled by dogs, too many to count. I think it is a sickness that people like dogs, a brainwashing.

Dogs don't kill more people than any other animal. In this country, that would be the cow, who attack (and kill) several thousand people a year.

But nobody is trying to ban cows, are they?

we eat cows which is why we don't ban them
99% of dogs have no use apart from being a pet to someone

My pet dog might be of no use to someone else, but to me she a massive part of my life and a member of my family. She is not useless to me.

she's useless to society as a whole though unlike cows.

I do not have a dog (may get one soon, in the middle of a VERY thorough research phase 😂)

But other people’s dogs are of use to me!! If I go anywhere and there is a doggo hanging out there, they immediately lift my mood! Even more so if it looks like I can approach the owner in order to meet there dog. I was out at the local after having a bad time of it lately and someone’s black lab came walking up to me, plonked itself next to me and asked for a fuss. I was in my element. I bloody LOVE dogs so much. They are an absolute gift to humanity.

(not including XL bullies of course! I would support a total ban on those)

I disagree with this.

Imagine if, over night, the government banned people from keeping dogs as pets.

What would the many people who make a living based on dog ownership now do? The professional trainers, dog paraphernalia manufacturers etc? Pet shops would have a sharp decline in sales and have to lay off staff. Ditto vets. I’m sure there are plenty of other examples.

And then, what would we do with puppies that had gone through training as service dogs but, for whatever reason, didn’t made the ‘cut’ - they can’t be adopted out if pet dogs were no longer allowed so would we euthanise them?

Not to mention the world would just be a much sadder place

I am the same when I see a dog, especially when it is a greyhound. Having some unexpected greyhoundy cuddles from one that is not mine makes my day. There is one who is a regular in my local cafe, a lovely lemon brindle girl. She is so soft and gentle.

And my heart sinks when I see a dog in a public place I want to be in ( especially food places; yeuch)

That is sad to hear. But this is a cafe in the middle of a dog park. It would be daft to not expect dogs there, and be bad business sense for the cafe owner.

didn't used to bne daft not to expect dogs in cafes.
I've said this before bu for the majority of my life dogs have been banned from food places so i feel disgust when I see a dog in a cafe no matter where it is.
Cafe owners used to manage fine without letting dogs in

Well, don't go on a cafe that is the middle of a dog park, that says dogs welcome in huge letters on the window, and then moan dogs are in there.
And it is hardly a fine dining restaurant. It does paninis, cakes, and little bits for dogs too.

I’m afraid you’ll just have to put up with it.
Many places allow dogs in simply because it’s good for business and the majority of people do not mind (or if you’re like me, are happy to see dogs in there)

For every one person that won’t eat in a cafe with a dog, I can bet there about ten that would

Hopefully basic hygiene rules will become comonplace again and I won't have to put up with it

Places that allow dogs still maintain a 5 star hygiene rating.
Dogs are, rightfully so, not allowed in food prep areas. But neither are members of the public.

Same. And we avoid it. An indoors place that allows dogs is not somewhere I want to be. They repulse me, with their floppy slobbery tongues and panting and stench.
I feel so fed up of seeing them. Probably the way most dog owners would feel if they saw a giant rat. Yet my feelings towards dogs are mocked, whilst most agree rats are horrible. There's barely any difference. I swear people are brainwashed.

No one has mocked you.
But you mock people who find comfort in their pet dogs like they are pathetic people that need pity.
I am not a fan of babies. They repulse me with their snot, crying, and smells. I can not help how I feel, as it is a visceral reaction. That is a me problem. I would never dream of telling a mum that her baby was disgusting.

YouMustBeTheWeasleys · 03/03/2025 20:52

@YeOldeGreyhound you can’t equate the two though - mother’s baby is her literal human child that she grew for 9 months and birthed; it is her DNA, part of her and so any comment on the baby is a comment on her and her baby’s father. The baby will, all things being equal, go onto live 80 years and contribute to society as a full person. If that baby died young, the parents would never get over it.

A dog has been purchased (or adopted), it is an animal and will last 6-12 years before the wonder inevitably gets another two weeks later. It’s just not the same and it’s insulting to suggest it is.

Etellas · 03/03/2025 20:53

Clicked on this to see if it had descended into the usual bullshit slinging competition and yup, not disappointed! 😅

Only XL bully sympathisers would resort to bringing up the most absurd points to try and justify something that is about as sensible as jumping off a cliff purely to see if you can fly. These people are so predictable.

These dogs are only a recent fad. A fashion, just like any other fashion except this latest obsession has proved itself to be a danger to people and other animals. Common sense would suggest this was probably a bad idea and we ought to wind this little bit of fun up and consign it to the history books.

There are plenty of other dog breeds to choose from that quite simply don't pose as much risk. You simply cannot argue otherwise. The stats speak for themselves.

You know we all have brains, you don't have to point out that cows have killed people. So has cow shit (slurry) which is a proper shit way to die. But slurry serves a purpose, it does a very valuable job and has done for a long time, it doesn't give us any street cred though, we don't expect everyone else to love and embrace our slurry, we don't think we're harder than you because we own slurry and you don't, we don't have teenagers or bored little men that parade our slurry round the streets threatening people with it, we aren't stupid enough to think slurry is cute, or after a day scaring the shit out of people, go home and take nice videos of it to upload to tiktok to prove it's cute and safe. We keep our slurry away from other people's kids and animals, in fact we warn them off going anywhere near our slurry, ultimately we don't patronise people by suggesting it is perfectly safe and everyone should have a pit of the stuff.

You're missing the point entirely, your very misguided, ill educated desire to own what is PROVEN to be a dangerous, simply as a pet, should NEVER EVER trump the rights of anyone to simply feel safe, let alone be safe. It is so incredibly selfish and cruel to society and to the dogs themselves that never asked to be born. The risk is simply too great with these dogs. Why do it?

No, I am making the similarity between things that we might dislike. I said babies, but I also could have said something else that is a common sight.
My dog brings me comfort, and is the reason I am still here. Yet some posters feel it is fine take pity on me, and say my dog is "vermin" etc. By the way, my dog does not stink or slobber. She doesn't even bark.
Some people do not like dogs, and that is fine. But they often go on to hate people with dogs too, and that is what I take issue with.

And it took my mum about 5 years between losing her dog, and getting another. Pet loss can run very deep.
