Woman 19 dies in dog attack in Bristol

Apologies if there’s already a thread on this, but how many more lives have to be taken in these horrific attacks before the Government admit that the current measures are failing. It surely has come to the point now that all XL Bullies should be euthanised.

Bullshit.
2023, the last year for which stats are available:
Gun deaths (homicides, will have been others - accidental deaths and so on): 29
Deaths caused by dog bites: 16 - which was unusually high, prior years had all been in single digits.

There are a lot of guns in the UK, more than most people realise, but they are tightly controlled.
Dogs kill more people than cows. Cows kill about 4 people a year. I'm pretty sure farm machinery kills a lot more than that.

Personally, I am not a fan of XL bullies. But lets at least get our facts straight.

See my link above (I know it's the DMirror but the figures look sound). Cows are the most dangerous animal in the UK.

But these dogs, whether they are dangerous or not, have the ability to turn without warning which I think is the problem. Any other breed of dog will give warning before attack, while the XL seems to just turn and attack in a stone cold killer way, rather than trying to drive away a menace, as most others will. They turn with the intention of killing.

Dogs definitely kill more people than guns in the UK.

Cows kill more people than dogs.

phlebasconsidered · 02/03/2025 18:24

Idiots in my area now going all out for Cane Corso. Being sold as "non XL" but still fit the bill for the type of people who bought XL.

Silly comment
The people being killed by cows are usually down to their own stupidity. The cows aren't in our homes or on our streets as pets.

Dogs need to be banned as pets. There is no reason for them. People can have cats or gerbils etc if they want to keep animals as pets.

One in every three UK households has a dog and there are plenty of reasons to keep them. They protect the house, provide companionship, are a means of daily exercise, are very funny and extremely loving and loyal. They have been in our society for thousands and thousands of years. Who are you to tell other people what pet they should keep?

Cows seem to kill about 5 people per annum (according to the She).
Dogs used to kill between 2 and 5 people. This went up steeply from 6 in 2022 to 16 in 2023 (according to ONS).

Alexandra2001 · 02/03/2025 16:25

Irrelevant.

We don't need large powerful dogs that cannot be stopped once they attack & its not just Bullies either.

We need cows and the vast majority of those gun deaths will be suicides or illegal weapons.

May as well bring up deaths caused by stairs or ladders.

Let's at least get our facts right.
The gun death stats I gave were for homicides.
I think I said earlier I this thread that there is an argument for having a licensing scheme for certain breeds of dog - not of the dog, but the owner. Plenty of people keep Dobermans and Rotties perfectly safely.

Mytholmroyd · 02/03/2025 19:32

Every available stat I can says it's cows

BattIestar · 02/03/2025 19:37

Cows aren't going to kill me because I'd never be in the vicinity of a cow. I would not put myself in that danger. Dogs, the filthy vermin, are everywhere, and impossible to avoid. I HATE that they are imposed on us. If you want to have a dog, I really think it should be contained to your house, and you should only have one if you have a big enough garden to use. Or there could be pockets of housing estates where they are permitted, and leave the rest of us to a more hygienic way of life, free from the incessant howling and barking and whining and yapping and growling.

I would be more than happy for cows to disappear too. We could just stop breeding them.

I find it beyond sad that people can't get themselves out of the house unless they have a dog. I despair for the fortitude of people's psyches when they claim they can't manage without their mangy mutt.

Yes...and they intimidate people, i wouldn't let my child run around a park if there was that type of dog running around.... You can have a great relationship with larger dogs without things that can tear you apart.

No need for them is there?

TBF the differences between murders via guns and dog deaths is pretty small ... 22 vs 16 in 2023.

There should be a general licensing system for all dogs, monies raised would pay for enforcement... we cannot have 19 yo's or anyone else torn apart, minding their own business, because somebody wants a large and potential vicious dog.

You'd soon change your tune if it was your child.

YeOldeGreyhound · 02/03/2025 19:44

By definition, dogs are not vermin. And if you have such a problem with dogs, then you should be the one to stay at home.
Some people don't like dogs, and that is fine... but there is no need to show such hatred for people who have their lives enriched by dogs. I am sure there are better things to use your energy on, to be honest.
My dog saved my life when I was really low. She keeps me going. Not everyone is blessed with pleasant people in their life, and not every is "blessed" with a neurotypical brain that means they find human relationships easy.
People can and do have a wonderful bond with their dogs. And right now, we need more love in the world.

Edit - that was aimed at @BattIestar

Are you actually a real person with this actual
opinion Confused

I don’t trust people who hate animals. Especially dogs.

@BattIestar you sound unhinged

Mytholmroyd · 02/03/2025 20:07

Don't move out of your 'hygenic' housing estate @BattIestar you'd hate it here in the country! And please don't set up a camera to see the wildlife pissing and shitting in your 'hygenic' gardens, parks and streets or you'll never go out of the house. On second thoughts ..

I am amazed how small and judgemental a lot of your lives seem to be - you are living in a different country that I simply don't recognise. Only on Mumsnet do I ever hear such bonkers rabid views!

'stupidity'?

According to the Health and Safety Executive most of the people killed by cows are farmers and farm workers. So I think you calling them stupid is down to your ignorance of farming and general stupidity.

I'm not suggesting letting them rampage around, am I? I'm suggesting a licensing system.

Personally I avoid XLs if I see them when out with my dogs. Not necessarily because they're muscle dogs, but because of their body language and the fact that the ones I've seen have a complete lack of engagement with their owners. The Dobes, Rotties and Malinois I've come across locally have all been nice dogs.

Oh, I get out alright without the dogs. I just get out MORE because I have them.

And as a PP said, you'd better avoid the countryside. Horseshit on lanes. Fox poo in the grass. Goose shit beside the pond. There are animals everywhere: I once got crapped on by a chicken roosting in a tree. Amazingly, I survived.

Dogs and humans have co-existed for millennia. I hope they continue to co-exist for many more to come.

Loads near me all unmuzzled. Terribly sad.

Not sad at all - just terribly illegal. Call the police each and every time you see one outdoors without both a lead and a muzzle.

AmateurDad · 03/03/2025 00:20

WeeBisom · 27/02/2025 15:16

I just don't see the ban and restrictions being enforced at all. A few days ago, I was walking down the street and a couple had two XL bullies off lead, unmuzzled. The woman was staring at people as they walked by, almost as if she wanted someone to challenge her. What on earth do you do when people just don't follow the law?

And even when people follow the rules they are still a problem. I was entering my flat with my puppy and small dog, and a man walked by with his XL on a lead. He was being dragged and clearly unable to handle it (despite him being a big bloke). The dog (who thankfully was muzzled) went berserk at my puppy and launched at her making her cry. I have no doubt that if the dog wasn't muzzled she would have been mauled.

What??? What do you mean, "what do you do when people don't follow the law?"?!? You call the police!

OonaStubbs · 03/03/2025 00:29

People who want dogs should be encouraged to get robo-dogs instead of the old fashioned kind.

Licensing system??

We have loads of restrictions on XLs atm.. far more onerous than a licensing system... yet people are still being torn apart.. there can be few deaths worse than this.

Out right bans, min 5 years inside, if flouted.

People can have brilliant bonds with breeds inc larger ones, that don't pose such dangers.

CMTwb1941 · 03/03/2025 08:06

It is quite true that dogs , threatening or not , have assumed too great a position in our society . I object to dogs in eating places and I object to sleeping in an hotel bedroom where a dog has been “ staying “ . An hotel near to me has a doggy ice cream facility ! I also object to dogs and their owners taking up the whole of the pavement whilst I , an elderly woman , step into the gutter . Dogs are animals and not designed to live in a small, domestic environment ; it is an aberration of nature , not for their good but to satisfy some need in humans . This is ok, and understandable if controlled ,but dogs are taking over society.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/03/2025 09:29

All the 'nobody should have a dog, filthy vermin' people should go and talk to a blind person with a guide dog, or an owner of a hearing dog for the deaf. See how much they would like to be without their dogs.

LookingAtMyBhunas · 02/03/2025 11:40

Goodness. Wasn't a young boy killed by one when we popped into his mates house for a drink while they were playing?

That sounds like poor Jack Lees.

The imbecile owners of the XL were seen encouraging it to lunge at young children and passersby.

Then the moronic owner began punching it in the head-

Just for “fun” by the looks.

Poor Jack didn’t stand a chance.

Lots of owners have them on very long leashes ( if leashed at all) and a long leash means the dog has far more power - simple physics.

They pull free of the owners who are incapable of managing them.

There was a man in the media bragging that only he was capable of holding two of these beasts-

But if they decided to turn, he’d not be able to hold them back.

I’m used to horses, but when I felt the strength of an XLB, the low centre of gravity, give me a 17hh horse to manage any day in a leading situation -much easier.

There's a big difference between highly trained working dogs and pets.
