Woman 19 dies in dog attack in Bristol

Apologies if there’s already a thread on this, but how many more lives have to be taken in these horrific attacks before the Government admit that the current measures are failing. It surely has come to the point now that all XL Bullies should be euthanised.

Er, no.
My dogs pose no threat to anyone. They are under control, safe off lead and well-mannered.
They get me out of doors every day. I get exercise and fresh air I'd be unlikely to get otherwise. They do wonderful things for my mental health.
The same is true of 1000s of other dog owners.

That poster is on all threads saying they should be banned. I find it incredibly sad.

I think they should all be euthanised. One of the biggest problems (see above post) is people who think their XL Bully is different. They think they’re well trained/soft/friendly/part of the family etc. Until they do what they are bred to do/be and they are suddenly unrecognisable from the beloved dog that their owner thought was different.

The danger is twofold. The dogs, and the person who is in denial about what these dogs actually are at their core.

Totally agree, note the added information about the husband being a police officer as if that gives some legitimacy to the ownership of the thing!

OonaStubbs · 02/03/2025 14:11

People would still find a reason to go outside even without dogs. It's just a problem that has been allowed to develop over many years. Dogs kill far more people in this country than any other animal. They kill more people than guns. And that's not to mention all the other misery they cause, scaring people, making noise through barking constantly, spreading diseases by shitting in the street and in parks, the list goes on and on. If dogs were not established as pets, and someone suggested introducing them as pets, people would think they were mad.

Humans are animals, and kill far more than dogs do. They do it with malice too.
Humans get dogs. If you want to reduce the amount dogs, then reduce the amount of people.
All the cons of dogs you mentioned are a lot worse from humans.
I really think you should get a dog. It might make you relax a bit better.

Mightymoog · 02/03/2025 14:26

@Mrsbloggz

I think as a society we should look for ways to make people aware of the true dangers of these animals.

Well if they choose to ignore the many many reports of these things taking peoples' faces off then they are beyond educating ( and are thick)

are you confused as to which species you belong to?

I am confused too. Humans are part of the animal kingdom. Humans kill far more than dogs do.
So Oonastubbs on her usual rant about dogs being the most dangerous animal is just daft.

but we have to live with humans as we are humans.
There is no need to live with dogs for the vast majority of people

I've noticed.
And yes, it is sad. Dogs have had such a massive impact on the development of human society and culture over millennia, and bring many positives now.

Kindly, go and read up on the domestication of the dog.
They kill more people than guns. is simply not true (unless we're going to get onto rabies, which is another matter and not relevant in the UK).

OonaStubbs · 02/03/2025 15:08

Dogs definitely kill more people than guns in the UK.

How many guns are in the UK, compared to dogs?
And guns are banned.
You are not even comparing apples and oranges. You care comparing apples and cannon balls.

Adamante · 02/03/2025 15:11

My friend is a dog walker. If she arrives at an outdoor space and there is an XL bully or similar there, she leaves immediately and goes elsewhere. It is simply not acceptable that we have such animals roaming in communal spaces and completely dominating them by fear. And where I am people do not always muzzle them and they’re not the type of people you could safely challenge. I adore dogs I really do and I fall short of calling for a complete cull but at the same time I cannot see a solution to this. There will be more deaths as long as these animals are allowed to remain in public life.

Dogs don't kill more people than any other animal. In this country, that would be the cow, who attack (and kill) several thousand people a year.

But nobody is trying to ban cows, are they?

Am fairly sure its cows that kill the most humans?

I ve long had dogs, got a GSP atm.. & have a wonderful bond with her. Dogs, as someone once said to me "Are always so fucking happy to see you"

But unless you re blind to the dangers, no one needs a XL Bully or any other Dog that a normal person cannot bring back under control if they were to attack someone.

This is the issue here, these things are intimidating, even when behaving well, when they aren't only a gun will stop them.

They need to be banned out right and DDA revisited to stop this from occuring again.

Dogs definitely kill more people than guns in the UK.

Bullshit.
2023, the last year for which stats are available:
Gun deaths (homicides, will have been others - accidental deaths and so on): 29
Deaths caused by dog bites: 16 - which was unusually high, prior years had all been in single digits.

There are a lot of guns in the UK, more than most people realise, but they are tightly controlled.
Dogs kill more people than cows. Cows kill about 4 people a year. I'm pretty sure farm machinery kills a lot more than that.

Personally, I am not a fan of XL bullies. But lets at least get our facts straight.

Irrelevant.

We don't need large powerful dogs that cannot be stopped once they attack & its not just Bullies either.

We need cows and the vast majority of those gun deaths will be suicides or illegal weapons.

May as well bring up deaths caused by stairs or ladders.

CorduroySituation · 02/03/2025 18:17

OonaStubbs · 02/03/2025 12:44

Dogs need to be banned as pets. There is no reason for them. People can have cats or gerbils etc if they want to keep animals as pets.

Ridiculous.

There are hundreds of breeds of dogs that can safely and loyally bring years of love, joy and companionship to their owners.

Nobody needs an XL Bully.

CorduroySituation · 02/03/2025 18:19

And I dont want a cat as a pet - I'm allergic, I don't like them and they kill birds and shit in other people's gardens.

I could as easily say to you - nobody needs a cat as a pet @OonaStubbs

Dogs are great. I don't even think of XL bullies in the same category as normal dogs. They are bred to kill.
